Cave. What a strange word. It is a noun, meaning “a hollow or natural passage under or into the earth, especially one with an opening to the surface.” Most are quite familiar with such formations, and though they have not been in one per say, they have watched people do just that. Some believe it’s quite thrilling to watch another go deep into the great unknown. Why? Humans tend to be fascinated and intrigued by caves, for we know not what goes on in the darkest depths and labyrinth like tunnels. While one could go to the very back of most caverns, there are a few hindrances that stop one from achieving this. Some caves are under water, too deep for us to explore, while others seem to have unlimited depth, going on forever and ever. It is in such a case as that that we know nothing that goes on past our line of exploration. And so, in our eyes, there is nothing back there. If that is so, then why do we keep seeking answers to a question supposedly resolved? The simple fact is that we are drawn by the mysterious beauty of caves. Which is why people have studied them for centuries, and not only the caves themselves but also the types of rock material and the life that lives in such strange places. And it was on one such adventures that the creature now know as the Pekryht was founded.
October 24th. The air had a noticeable chill to it, but it wasn’t freezing by any stretch of the imagination. The day was calm and quiet, a peaceful yet slightly nippy breeze blowing eastward as a geologist and his son set out to explore some of the more interesting caves in the area. The mountains were known for the extravagant mineral samples that resided there, as well as legends of creatures that resided in the depths of the caves. No human had ever been able to reach such a place, but the pair was determined to do so. It would be a historic moment. They would be famous! Due to some advanced in technology, they were able to proceed deeper into their choice cavern than they had ever intended to go. After about an hour of walking, all light had vanished, their flashlights the only brightness in the dark cave. Onward they ventured, determined to make it farther into the undiscovered darkness. Drip. Drop. The moisture fell from the stalactites and made ripples in the puddles that they hit. The pair pressed onward, until the son tripped over a rather oddly shaped rock. At least, it was considered a rock at the time. Finding the article interesting, the father and son headed back towards the entrance of the cave to examine it further. The ‘rock’ was taken back the lab, whereupon it was discovered that the rock was not a rock but an egg! The creature that hatched was named the Pekryht, after the geologist’s last name. And so, the cave dwellers known as the Pekryht were brought into society.
Sorry it took so long
