Nosferatu

If Gaia could bring Night of the Living Dead, they could most likely bring the origional Nosferatu as well.

This movie is a CLASSIC, and very entertaining to watch, not to mention make fun of with your friends.
I would think that it would be even more entertaining than the current zombie movie that gaia has. The zombie movie, all though funny, is somewhat boring.

Nosferatu is NOT boring at all. I've seen this classic first hand. Even to this day, viewers might still find the film creepy. Especially with the long fingered shadows of the creature.

Not only is this film creepy, it's hilarious.
His dramatic movements with his long pointy fingers, how he bolts accross an open area like a bat out of hell in what seems to be broad daylight, and his bunny fangs will definately prove as entertainment material for all of us.

Some of you may have doubts such as:

Nightmare1
I think one of the main reasons that they can show The Night of the Living Dead is because it is not protected, i.e. Gaia will not get sued for showing it.

I would be for Nosferatu if they could manage, but I am not sure if the copyright/reserves would be an issue.

But that can easily be answered with this:

Shine On Crazy Diamond
It looks like they're grabbing movies off of the Internet Archive, and Nosferatu is free to use AND posted on the Internet Archive, so they probably will!

InternetArchive.org!

Please help me bring this old Classic to the Gaian Cinema so that we can all enjoy it.

Anyway!

The only reason copies of this movie exist today is because copies were hidden, or misplaced, and then later found.

You might notice it's a wee bit similar to "Dracula"? Well, it was. What happened was that the widow of Bram Stoker noticed that too, and took it to court. She won, and demanded all of the copies of "Nosferatu" to be destroyed.

That might have been the end of the first filmed version of any vampire story! Except a few copies did get squirreled away. Later, Universal negotiated successfully for "Dracula", and there you go.

But, many moons later, copies of "Nosferatu" began to surface once more. They escaped their untimely demise!

This is a textbook of German film making style (from the time), which is why the pacing seems to be so slow. This is not them padding, it is intended that the long lingering on even static scenes to build tension in the audience.

Keep in mind just a few years earlier, movies were often filmed "tableau" style, meaning people literally just standing there before the camera for the audience to study. You are intended to study the expressions, the body language, the scenery, everything.

The dark atmospheric lighting is intentional (as opposed to the earlier "Das Kabinett of Caligari", where they had one light to work with and almost no budget), and the special effects which today, anyone can do with a good cam-corder, were state of the art.

People hadn't seen those sorts of effects before, so imagine how real it looked to them!

A lot of F.W. Murnaus works survived, he was truly a master of German Impressionism. Sadly, he was killed in 1931 in a car accident.

Max Schrek, who played Orlok, is just plain CREEPY. He gives little sympathy for the proverbial devil in his portrayal, and thrives on the pestilence, greed, and evil of the character.

And! (Whew!)

A shot-for-shot remake of "Nosferatu" was made not too long ago. It's great, the main problem is, in my opinion, it lacks the intensity of a crew of filmmakers and actors who were of their time. They're comfortable in the filmmaking art, they're almost easy going.

The best part of that movie is the rats. See, they filmed the scene with rats pouring down a street. They did this in a small Netherlands (as I recall!) town which had not had wild rats there in ages.

So to get permission to have all those rats in the town loose on the street, ALL of the rats you are seeing are WHITE. They changed the color of the rats in post production to gray!

And! The original title of the movie is: Nosferatu: eine Symphonie des Grauens. (That's "Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror" wink .

Whew!

Now -- chances are good they'll not be able to get Bela Lugosis "Dracula" because Universal is good about keeping their movies in copywrite, BUT!!

There is a SPANISH version of Dracula made at the same time on the same sets, which is just as good! (and hard to find!)

Finally!

"Vampire" movies did not mean blood sucking vampires before this movie. "Vampires" or "Vamps" were uber-sexy gothy evil women (Theda Bara!) who would do bad things to get their way.

"Les Vampires" is a French movie serial which features one of the earliest of the "Vamps" (and scariest!), but it does seem to still be in copywrite, too. If you can watch it, you'll love it!
