- Flatsale Rules »
01 » Flatsale begins August 1st and ends when all children have found homes.
02 » Entries must be posted in the thread.
03 » There is no limit to how many times you can enter, however, you may only have one entry per child at a time. If you wish to reenter for the same child, you must wait until your first entry has been reviewed. If you wish to enter for more than one child at once, that's fine! If you already own a Patch child, you may only win once in this even.
04 » All trades must be sent to the shop mule and labeled appropriately.
05 » Once your entry is posted, it is final. No editing or deleting. We record all entries in a separate thread and judge from that, so editing your post won't change the entry we judge from. Also, if we catch you posting and editing/deleting, we will disqualify you from this competition.
06 » Follow the Gaia TOS, of course!
07 » Do not complain about price or discourage other entrants. Please also refrain from excessive cheering, as it can be discouraging unless the cheer is directed to all!
08 » Main shop rules apply here.
09 » The information you put on your entry is considered fixed; the name you give your child and identity of the guardian(s) should be what you intend to use in the shop. Because roleplay often changes, we understand if what you enter does not end up being exactly what you use, but please apply in good faith with the intent of using the information you provide us!
10 » Important: New Judging Details: All entries will be reviewed and given a Yes/No vote from the judges. The first entry to receive 3 Yes votes (4 for existing Patch players) will trigger a 48-hour SUDDEN DEATH period to allow anyone who has been working on an entry to finish and send it in. At the end of 48 hours, the best entry will be declared the winner. All Y/N votes will be publicly recorded and listed alongside the entries. If you receive a N vote, you may revise and repost your entry. You may also revise and repost if you have received 3 Yes votes and want to do so for whatever reason.
11 » There is no fee to enter, winner will pay 15k.

The Children »
This sale is a cosplay event. How you interpret that is up to you.
You do not have to roleplay as the actual character or use the original character name.
You can if you want to, but it's your choice!
You do not need to be familiar with the series your character is from.
All you need is a concept for the character, a bit of writing skill, and some time to write an entry!

Aegis from Persona 3 » by romesilk - CLOSED
Proving that robots can have just as much soul and feeling as any human, Aegis was created for combat, but has the capacity for so much more. Given the chance, she will surely enrich and inspire her guardian(s) and all she comes into contact with. Aegis comes with three stages predrawn (baby, child, teen) so timely growths are assured.

Anthony from Eternal Darkness » by Smerdle - CLOSED
Direct from the artist! Anthony is one of 12 playable characters in Eternal Darkness and his chapter involves him reading a scroll meant for Charlemagne which consequently zaps him with E-vil and slowly turns him into a walking bag of rot over the course of his level. I'd like to warn entrants that this kid will appear to rot as he grows. I don't mind if he has the sprightliest, happiest personality on the planet and runs track like a champ (in fact I think that would be marvelous), but his skin is gonna zombie-out.

Also, Smerdle has provided links for two gameplay clips so you can see Anthony in action! [@] [@]

Billy Lee Black from Xenogears » by romesilk - SUDDEN DEATH ENDING THURS, AUG 13, 1:00P PST
You don't have to have played a game to appreciate its character designs and stories! That's very true of Billy, as while I've never had the chance to play Xenogears, I've always admired Billy and chose to draw him in this theme sale. A gunslinging pacifist, Billy will no doubt protect his family with everything he has. All he needs is a loving home and a family to protect. Billy come with three stages predrawn (baby, child, teen), ensuring timely growths. His teen stage features an alternate production sketch hairstyle.

GLaDOS from Portal » by Faewynd - CLOSED
Let them eat cake! So said Marie Antoinette, or was it GLaDOS!? Regardless, you'll probably need GLaDOS's help to proceed through the game. She won't lead you astray! You can trust her! And surely if you do there will be cake! You can't go wrong with a Patch child based on GLaDOS, right? You can trust the Patch and its science, right? WE PROMISE THERE WILL BE CAKE.

- Entry Form »
Please post this in the thread.
There is no limit to entry length, but longer does not necessarily equal better. The most important criteria for judging is the quality of your ideas, not the quantity.
The italics are just there to help you out, they do not need to be included in your entry.
- Gaia Username:
This will go on the cert if you win!
Entering for:
Which child this entry is for. You can only enter for one at a time!
Doctor: Akari/Crusoe
You can only pick one! Your choice will determine if your child starts as a cabbage or a crate.
Child Name:
Guardian(s):
The person or persons who will be raising your child.
Child Personality:
Your child's personality will be developed as s/he grows, so what you write here will not be the end-all of your character. We'd just like an idea of what in general you have planned.
Writing Prompt:
Choose one from the following post. One prompt per entry; if you wish to complete multiple prompts, you may submit multiple entries. Your prompt is mostly to see how well you write and how you portray your characters. You are not expected to use it as an official roleplay.
Additional Notes:
If there's anything else you feel needs to be said!

- The Prompts »
Only one prompt per entry. Feel free to use any prompt you like! If you wish to complete more than one prompt, you may enter more than once.
1» Game On (Any Age)
Your child has a real competitive streak and has to turn everything into a competition, even tiny little everyday things! It can be a lot of fun for you as a parent, but also grueling. What is your child competing with you in today, and is it just another fun little game or the straw that breaks the camel's back?
2» Winner Takes All (Any Age)
There is such a thing as a sore loser, and such a thing as a sore winner. Your child is one of these things. Which one, and what has your child just won or lost that brings this unsavory trait out in him or her?
3» Obsession (Any Age)
Your child has become completely obsessed with something. It might be an object, a collection that just has to be expanded, or an activity. It might be something good, like eating healthy, or something bad. Whatever it is, it has completely consumed your child's life! To the point where you might even call it an addiction! What is this obsession and what do you do about it, if anything?
4» Game Over (Any Age)
Your child seems to think everything in life is a game and won't take anything seriously. If something in life goes wrong, your child thinks s/he can just hit the reset button or start the level over and it'll be fine. This had led to your child engaging in some risky behavior. How do you convince your child that if they continue, it really will be GAME OVER?

- F. A. Q. »
Q» How many times can I enter?
A» As many times as you like! (Or can afford to!)
Q» How much does it cost to enter?
A» 750g per entry. If you have no Patch children, your first entry is fee. Second entry is 250g, third 500g, etc.
If you have a Patch child, multiply the number of children you have by 250g. That is your fixed entry fee.
Q» What is the deadline?
A» May 3rd, 2009, 6:00pm PST (Gaia server time). No late entries will be accepted! Do not wait!
Eastern Standard Time: 9:00pm
Q» How long should my entry be?
A» As long as you want, but we're not expecting a novel! In fact, we don't want a whole novel! It would take too long to read. If you look at some of the past entries that won, they often were not the longest.
Q» Can I enter multiple times for the same child?
A» Yes, but if you want to enter more than once for a single child, you have to submit more than one prompt response.
Q» Can I send more than one entry fee at once?
A» Only if you post more than one entry at a time. Please note: we will not complete trades without posted entries, and your entry will not be considered paid until the trade is complete.
Q» Can I use the same prompt more than once?
A» Yes, so long as your response is different each time!
Q» Can I combine prompts?
A» Sure! But you may not use the elements of the bonus prompts until after your first entry.
Q» Does my entry have to be in third person/past tense/etc?
A» No, but it's usually advisable. You can use first person and/or present tense, or really any story construction you feel like.
Q» Can I use the same guardian character(s) more than once?
A» Yes.
Q» If I use the same character for more than one entry, do I have to write a new background/personality each time?
A» No, you may reuse what you've written previously. If you make changes, please let us know!
Q» Can I enter for more than one child?
A» Yes, but you can only win once.
Q» Can my child have special powers, backstory, or magic?
A» Yes, if you want!
Q» Do I have to use the description given for the child?
A» No, the descriptive blurbs are just little things I make up to describe the child and try to give you an idea of what the artist seems to be doing, design-wise. You do not have to use any of the decriptive info as a basis for your character. You're free to say your child is whatever you like! If you want to use the description in some way, that's fine, too.
Q» Can I edit my entry after I post it?
A» We can't stop you, but it won't make any difference if you do. When you post your entry, we copy it to another thread and judge from that. We will not change the entry once we have received it, so please make sure you have corrected all errors prior to posting. If we catch you editing, you'll be disqualified.
Q» Can I have a friend proofread?
A» Yes, so long as the writing is yours!
Q» Can I enter for someone else?
A» As a large part of the contest is based on the characters you are playing, no. You may only enter for yourself. We do conduct non-RP contests and events, too!
Q» Can I have more than two guardians?
A» In the interest of not overloading the judges, please limit yourself to two at most for your entry!
Q» I have a question specific to the characters in my entry.
A» Please PM it to Dr. Akari and we will answer it as soon as possible! If you have an entry-specific question, please submit it before April 29th so you have enough time to consider the answer in your entry! We will not be extending the contest for any reason except server crashes. If you PM an entry-specific question on the last day and then don't have time to revise or implement your entry based on the response to your question, it is not our fault.
Q» I entered a previous flatsale. Does that qualify me to use a bonus prompt?
A» Yes, as a little reward for your continued efforts! (And for reading the FAQ!) But please state in the Additional Info section on your entry that you've entered a previous sale to qualify for the bonus prompt, because we may not remember that you did.
Q» Does my entry have to involve the child I want to win?
A» Yes!
Q» With rehomings, do I have to follow what previous roleplayers did with the characters?
A» You don't have to be exact, but please do at least read the previous journal/s to learn some of your character's history and try not to drastically change the basics without some sort of good reason.
Q» Can I change a character's name who is being rehomed?
A» For the purposes of entering the contest, please use the name/s provided in your entry. If you win and you are interested in changing the name/s, we can discuss the issue then.
Q» I have a question not answered here.
A» Please post it in the flatsale thread or PM Dr. Akari and we will do our best to help!

- Judges & Tips »
For this contest, take the general writing advice, but remember this contest isn't about the standard guardian/child story, so some things may not apply!
If you'd like to read the feedback given from our first flatsale, you can find it here! There's probably some really useful advice there if you can take the time to read over it.
EmperialTeal »
- Advice for entrants »
Length is good, but I'll take quality over quantity any day. Be forewarned that if you write too much, you risk having your judges get bored and "turn off," so to speak, unless what you've written is extremely compelling. Always try to leave them wanting more, not overloaded!
My pet peeves are powergaming, overplayed character types, and contradictory characters (e.g. the loner guy with a gruff exterior who secretly has a heart of gold). I look for consistency, originality, and realism.
I think one of the best things you can do is include a quirk or detail that the reviewers can relate to, something that makes us go "I know a person like that!" or "This character reminds me of me!" Even the most surreal characters should have some basis in reality. Look at the people around you, observe what they do, and try to incorporate it! Look for visceral details for the setting of your prompt response, but use in moderation. Your reader's imagination can be a powerful tool.
Being able to elicit a sympathetic emotional response in your reader is key. I don't mean you should make your reader sad, but that you should make it so the reader identifies with your character or situation. This can even mean getting your reader to laugh! (Never underestimate the power of humor.) What you don't want is to write something bland and forgettable, or something that elicits an unsympathetic (angry, frustrated, or annoyed) response. Get the reader on your side and you'll be far more likely to win.
In your prompt response, a very important question is "Who is this story about?" Think carefully on the answer. The prompts are written towards you as a player and not really you as a character.
For gods' sakes, spell check. It can save your entry!
