4O4 Error
friends@gaia has been disabled as far as I know.
No more chain letters. Yay!

Error speaks the truth. I wasn't exactly hoping that it would flat out DISABLE friends@gaia messages. gonk I'll just keep all the long text on here just in case it gets enabled.

Hey you- if you have any problems or questions with my idea, please be sure to read the WHOLE first post before posting.

Thank you.
Lots of us here are fed up with the chain letters that fill up our inboxes every day. Even though its against the TOS, people never stop sending them and people rarely report them.
My suggestion for a new option meant to block "friends@gaia" messages- the type of message that is sent to everyone on your friends list, which makes sending chain letters very easy to do.
The option would most likely be in the Preferences section, under mail:

I think it might be a better idea if you could prevent receiving friends@gaia PM's from some people and receive friends@gaia PM's from others since some people don't just send chainletters and you might want to read those.

All messages that go into your inbox are scanned, (for lack of a better word, it's early.) and if they contain common words in a chainletter, such as sign, plz, and multiple usernames, it would be sent to a different inbox.
Once it was there, you could read it and decide what to do with it.
After all, it might not be a chainletter.
It might be a newbish friend that still uses chat-speak, someone listing usernames, or saying that they signed a cool petition, etc.
As far as my inbox is concerned, it would definantly clear it up and let have less chains and actual letters to sift threw...

Da Jules
to solve that just make 2 seperate spaces in inbox 1 called to you and friends@gaia messages

But I'm leaving Gaia and I want all of my friends to know. How am I supposed to tell them if some of them have that option?
First of all, its unlikely that they'd all have the blocking option on. You can still use the friends@gaia option, and then go back and send the message to those who have the option turned on. Or you could post something on your profile or leave a comment on your profile.
But I have a million friends on Gaia! I don't wanna PM them all individually!!!
When you have a million friends, 5k says that they don't all care about you. Just message your closest friends.
Won't this encourage chain letters? I mean, won't they still send it if they think that the people getting the messages don't care whether or not they get them?
If the people getting them don't care, then they don't care. At least the others would be spared. If the sender really wanted to send the letter to even those who had the option turned on, then he'd have that annoying permission error to deal with.
Why not just report the chain-letter senders?
Very few people actually feel comfortable with that, and that's nothing that Gaia can change. Plus, being as popular as Gaia is, they probably get a million reports a day and can't get to all of them anyways.
I still just don't know if this is the best way to prevent chainletters.
And perhaps it's not. But I'm just suggesting an option and, if you don't like my idea (and if it were to come into effect) you don't have to use it. But there are other people who are not only getting sick of chain letters but feel uncomfortable adding those people to their ignore lists or reporting them. This would just be another option available that at least some Gaians might find helpful.

Keep watching this part of the first post if you like my idea.
Should I make this a petition?
Some people have already brought up the idea of this being a petition. If you think that this has a shot at being a good petition, please PM me and if I get enough PMs, I'll put this in the petitions section. 3nodding
