What is this {a} Clockwork Sorrow thing and why is the Moonstruck shop mule running it? Well, {a} Clockwork Sorrow is a little mini-shop offset for Moonstruck. It auctions elaborate, "limited" story-line based 1 - 4 stage pets. I put limited in quotation marks because it's more like a "whenever I feel like it" thing. xD At the moment they are non-RPable, but in the future they will play a big part in the story. You can also opt to have a non-RPable Clockwork Sorrow.

Clockwork Sorrows are synthetic beings made from three things – pure life force, an emotion manifestation/catalyst, and a phrase or pair of words. They age to a certain point and then stop, never growing old.

A Clockwork Sorrow has two special abilities that pertain to their word essence and the emotion used to as a catalyst.

Their first power is a passive influence the Clockwork Sorrow has no control over, the second is a consciously activated skill or ability. In the case of the first Clockwork Sorrow auctioned the manifest emotion was fear, so her passive influence causes humans around her to become fearful. Her word essence determines her active ability which she consciously controls, which could be anything from growing wings to being able to heal with her tears. The player decides what the ability is, but they have to decide on one.

Each comes with a custom cert to match their theme.

B A C K S T O R Y
Long long ago, in the city of Prague where alchemy flourished a very old and decrepit man called Vlastimil Reznik and his young apprentice (who is now remembered only as Sionek), finally figured out the whole damn fuss about that pesky, elusive substance called the philosopher's stone. And as it were, the philosopher's stone was not a stone, but a powder. Reznik was thrilled, they'd gotten the holy grail of alchemy all by themselves (this was necessary, or else they'd have their doors beaten down and be hung from the ceiling and their secrets stolen by other alchemists). Sionek was not so thrilled. He was a brilliant young thing, competitive and sharp in tongue and wit, born into a very good life, but he was also greedy and malformed in the soul.

Unlike his master, he did not want it for Enlightenment or spiritual completion. And although it was a nice thought to have as much gold as you wanted he was already so very rich, so that wasn't much fun to him. The idea of delaying death was alright, he supposed. He had already come across a substance much better, and much more extensive in its capabilities, at covering that area of his desires. If that were all it were important for he'd have thought really there wasn't much to do with the philosopher's stone. But it was because of this other substance, the one he did not tell Reznik he had created despite using his master's own theories - azoth - that the stone actually had any meaning to him.

The problem with azoth was, after being a genius and figuring out what others for millennia before him and even his own master did not understand, he could not make it do what he wanted. And he wanted life. Not his own life, he was still young and felt immortal as it was, but another's life. He wanted to create the perfect being. To be the best cried out to him. Sure, they had the philosopher's stone. Sure, he had azoth. But he would not be satisfied until he also had homunculi.

It made sense, having a solvent and a powder, to use them together. After much thought they came together in the simple form of a very large basin which took more work than Sionek thought the project was worth. Especially as he had to work his way around the stupid philospher's stone's habit of turning things into gold, to avoid his master's detection. (A big shining gold basin was horrible aesthetics, anyways.) The basin contained the azoth, which as the essence of life was most certainly the prime ingredient for creating it, and the various components necessary for creating homunculus were mixed in. But it was a strange sort of dark sorcery he practiced on his own, coupled with his words and his intent that really brought the creatures to life.

As far as he was concerned, they were all failures, because they were all different aspects of himself. At times they were his self loathing, his distrust of others, his admiration for others, his hatred for others, his tenderness, ambitions, courage, clockwork and systematic sorrows from the heart of a youth. But they were all parts of a human, and as a human he was imperfect. They were all not what he wanted, as amazing as they were by themselves.

Times changed, his search dragged on. His failed experiments he treated differently each, depending on their degree of "perfection" in his eyes. Some he threw out immediately, like unwanted meat scraps for the dogs, others he doted on, some he worked like slaves behind his master's back. In the end, to keep his secret, he killed Vlastimil Reznik and with age began to appreciate the elixir-properties of their discoveries considerably more than before. But though he could turn back the wrinkles in his skin, Sionek could not stop the years from dragging by... and a man who never ages is a suspicious thing indeed. He left Prague with only his basin and ingredients, wandered the world enduring wars and catastrophe, and then disappeared altogether.

And then, all of a sudden, it was the industrial revolution and a useless, ridiculously large basin that had been drug up from the mud of an English bog was melted down to be put to better use, because who the hell cares how old it could possibly be? Weren't no historians around to stop them. The basin became an oven, it was shipped off, it went around through various establishments and eventually landed itself in a bakery on a hill. Despite the azoth which had seeped into the metal after so many years of usage, it did not produce anything mysterious or wonderful at first. Men and woman baked in it and it was a normal oven for all anyone cared. But then a peculiar young man who liked cooking far too much than is natural for a straight male decided to make some crêpes, his loneliness and isolation baked in with them.

Funny how the past repeats itself, isn't it?

B A C K S T O R Y S U M M A R Y
Now to sum that up so that you don't have to kill yourself reading it:

    1. Brilliant old man (Reznik) and brilliant young man (Sionek) combine forces in long-ago Prague to create the philosopher's stone. Sionek takes things a bit further and creates azoth, essence of life, creates failed homunculi experiments (clockwork sorrows) using the azoth, sorcery through spoken words, and his emotions/intentions in a big metal bowl. Eventually kills Reznik to keep his secret.

    2. Sionek stops his aging, flees from Prague to avoid getting beaten up for being a demon or something else equally unpleasant, leaves the clockwork sorrows behind to fend for themselves. Wanders around making more and eventually disappears.

    3. Bigass bowl turns up in a bog in England's industrial revolution, melted down into an oven. Despite the residual azoth that seeped into the metal of the bowl it is inactive until the present day because nobody except Audley is emo enough to bake with their emotions on the line. Thus, the past begins to repeat itself.

Clockwork Sorrow owners have complete control over what happened to their characters after their creation. It's all up to them what they did with themselves after being abandoned as cruelly as they were. Whether they hate or long for their creator, how they hid their abilities or physical "differences" should they have any, anything else, this is all the owner's domain. However, there are a few things to keep in mind:

The last Clockwork Sorrows were created some four hundred years ago, the bowl went missing then. Sionek has also been missing since a bit before then, and has made no attempts to reach out or find his creations.

Clockwork Sorrows are drawn towards that which made them - that is, azoth, and Sionek. Whether or not the latter is still alive is debatable, but we all know where the remaining azoth is.

What do Clockwork Sorrows think about Sweet Things, which are essentially "the next generation"? ...

Clockwork Sorrows are very nearly immortal. That is not to say they could survive getting their heads chopped off, or losing a bunch of blood from having a limb removed. They are still organic beings. However, as far as naturally aging or dying, they just don't seem to go past early twenties.

No co-owning a breedable. It's just simpler if you keep it like that.
Only one per person. As usual.
    No pet trades, sorry.

R P ' I N G
This breedables shop is aimed at literate roleplayers. If you're of the caliber the shop is aiming for, you know most RP'ing rules already.
Don't be a muncher. Use common sense and don't god mode, or generally act n00bish.

F A Q
    1. So these things are a side story of Moonstruck?
Sort of. Right now there is no story to them and you can't play them, but they're essentially a prequel to the plot of Moonstruck.

    2. I want one, but I also want a Sweet Thing that I can roleplay...
Don't worry, you can have both! Sweet Things and Clockwork Sorrows are pretty much seperate characters, so even if you own a Sweet Thing already or even two Sweet Things, you can have a Clockwork Sorrow. Clockwork Sorrows are stand-alone characters and do not require a guardian or caretaker like a Sweet Thing does, so your two pets might not ever even meet.

    3. How can I get one?
Just check the "current -> sales" post to see what's going on now, and what to expect in the future.

    4. Do I have to roleplay?
Not religiously. They're RP optional like Sweet Things... however, because of their limited number it is advised that if you want to get one you should contribute and roleplay.

    5. Will there be customs?
    Yes.

    6. How will customs be sold?
Probably with set prices depending on how many stages each one has. And the occasional auction.

    7. How much are they customizable?
That's up to you. Because they have detailed designs, you can choose to either design them completely yourself, or just choose the word and emotion and leave it up to the artist. <3 You can also choose how many stages they will have. (Maximum is 4) Keep in mind when you design that these are drawn at a low resolution, and most appear in certs at actual or near actual size.

    9. Wait, stages?
You're probably wondering what the hell about these stages that I'm offering, since Clockwork Sorrows are generally one-stage pets. In a multiple stage pet, the first stage is an item that has to do with their word essence. For instance, a two stage pet like 'satin stardust' starts off as just a few star crumbs {.x.} and then becomes her final form {.x.}. If she were a three stage pet, she'd start at starcrumbs, become a young child or teen, then end up at her final form. Four stages would be starcrumbs, young child, teen, adult/final.

    9. Will there be guest auctions?
    Yes please. :'D

    10. Can they breed?
    Lollercoasters, no. They are artificial beings, and though they could... err... engage in the act of breeding, they can't actually bear child. >>;

S A L E S

{a} Clockwork Sorrow is closing. There will be two more sales. Both sales will feature two stage, non-custom sorrows. They are:

An auction. No AB. Generic auction format, you know.
A writing flatsale. If you win, it's free. Naturally there is only one winner. Participants are allowed two entries: one prose, one poetry. You can also choose to simply do one or the other. Anyone can start writing their entry now, although entries will be accepted for a three day time period once the event starts. The prompt:

Write in the theme of your desired clockwork's emotion. That doesn't mean you have to write ABOUT the emotion, it means just make it the driving force behind the piece. The literal subject can be anyone or anything, but the pieces that express their emotion the most - regardless of the actual story - are the ones with the most weight.

Anyone who does not currently own a Clockwork may enter.
up! dec.28.07 Dates have been decided. The submission period is (in PST) all day of the 3rd to the end of the day on the 5th of January. In other words, it starts at 12:01 AM PST on the 3rd, it ends at midnight PST on the 5th.

Remember to PM your entries to Audley, the shop mule! I don't really care what you title the PM, just make sure I can tell it's a flatsale entry. :')

    Why is the flatsale free?
In an auction you know where you stand and the outcome is certain. In a flatsale, you don't have any certainty or grounds for estimating your chance of winning as I will not be doing flatsale crits before or during the event. So, you trade certainty of victory for taking your chances and not knowing until the decision has been made. Also, I've never required any sort of writing or work at all for a flatsale in this shop before.

We will be using the following form for winners, please submit via PM to Audley:

Form:

Clockwork Sorrow Name: Self explanatory.
Gender: Female/Male.
Word List or Essence: The word essence itself, or a list of words that I can pick from... The more the better!
Manifest Emotion: One feeling that is the base emotion of the Clockwork. Can be negative or positive - just please try and avoid cliches. Examples: Heartbreak, Joy, Tranquility (arguably tranquility is more a state of being than a feeling, but I'll accept those too)
Stages: 2 only. You may specify whether both are adult, or if one is a child and the other an adult.
