The Story
Each Universal is the keeper of it's respective place in space, be it a planet, a star, a black hole, or a nebula--or rather, they will be. Right now these Universals need to experience the world and learn how to take care of themselves, before they can take care of something so important in the slightly bigger scheme of things. To do this, they have allowed themselves to become the "pets" of certain hand-selected individuals.
During their stay here, the Universals will live in a pre-created habitat, but will be allowed to venture outside the habitat under the supervision of their caretaker only. They will learn from their caretaker and their surroundings as well as other Universals.
When they reach a certain level of maturity, a Universal can choose to leave their caretaker and ascend to a higher plane of being, leaving their body and journeying to care for their place in the universe, or give up that birthright to another Universal, in which case the process will start over with another caretaker.
Universals and their caretakers are encouraged to go adventuring as a way of accelerating their growth and maturity, but even those who stay at home will one day reach the point where they can move on or stay with their caretaker.
The choice to stay or leave is a choice that must be made between each Universal and their caretaker. No one else can influence this choice in any way, for it is a lifechanging decision for both. Either way, both will have learned and benefited from the experience.
I hope you decide to change the universe by helping one of these Universals.
The Bigger Picture
Once a Universal reaches adulthood, it can choose a faction. Universals have in the past chosen two basic alignments after their time with humans. They're either for them or against them. Alignment of the Univesral does not matter in determining this choice to ally itself with one of the factions.
The largest anti-human faction is known as Snaremaster. These Universals have been known to dispize humans in all forms some more than others. The Spectre Strike are quite the opposite. This faction believes that humans are generally good and that you should not judge the whole race by a few. There is another faction called Faire de Rien, and as their name suggests, they try not to get involved in the battles between the pro-human and anti-human factions. They don't really care what role humans have played. There are other groups, besides these three, but they are generally quite small in comparison.
Further detail on the different factions can be found in the guild.
