Familiars are, in fact, the awakening force behind the latent magic of humans. One cannot cast or perform magic of each school unless one has this tangible connection to the magic itself; some say the Merlins used to give out wands, but the Merlins have been missing for as long as the Dames Avalon, and even the Dames have no idea what happened to them.
Familars are formed of raw magic. Magic comes in a variety of types, and familars can be created from any of them. Each different type of magic has an influence on familiars created from it; this manifests both in their physical appearance and in the magic they are capable of performing, as follows.
Necromancy:
These familars usually have black on them somewhere.
They have powers centering around death and the dead, such as the ability to see and speak to ghosts, manipulate ectoplasm, and posess dead bodies.
Divination:
These familiars' colors nearly always include some yellow.
They have powers include seeing into the past, the future, and distant locations.
Creation:
These familiars often include green in their colors.
They manifest abilities such as creating small objects out of nothing, healing, or augmenting items.
Destruction:
These familiars usually have red in their colors.
They have powers such as causing spontaneous decay of items, bursts of raw elemental energy, and aging.
Illusion:
These familiars are often orange.
They have powers to create small visual or auditory figments, control light and sound, and hide creatures and objects.
Translocation:
These familiars usually have purple somewhere in their colors.
They have abilities such as flight, teleportation, and summoning.
Protection:
These familiars are often white.
They have abilities such as ward, bind, and repel.
Hexes and Charms:
These familiars usually include blue somewhere in their colors.
They often manifest abilities such as curses, enhancing luck, and influencing the emotions of creatures.
Metamorphosis:
These familiars are often grey.
They manifest abilities centering around change; they can change one object into another, or one creature into another, or permanently change the color of objects or creatures.
