Welcome to the Midnite-Star Art Contest! I've done art auctions before, but this will be my first art contest so any suggestions are welcome. Midnite and Star represent my best friend and I. I first created them as mascots for the anime club my friend and I started 2 yrs ago -- their looks, personalities, and names are exaggerations based around ourselves. Just think black v. white / dark v. light and you'll have the right idea.

Now our Birthdays are ironically one day apart around January 30th. I considered doing a new Midnite-Star art for Midnite, but wondered what was so special about that? I do new art for it all the time anyway. So I changed that idea into gathering a variety of Midnite-Star Art from other artists to surprise her. There's really a lot you can play around with considering Midnite and Star's personalities and the theme. I hope that once you get a feel for the characters, you'll find them as fun to draw as I do!

Edit: This is no longer a surpise! Midnite discovered it and will probably be seen haunting the thread.

OVERALL

1st Place- So-naa & nsqcleo
Midnite and I just refused to choose one of these over the other for first place. Both show beautiful artwork style, colors, costume, and a great portrayal of the characters Midnite and Star. Wonderful job to you both! One winner will recieve the Kiki & 35k and the other the Lunar Cloak & 50k (total value for both winners are each 60k... they just need to state their preference.)

2nd Place - Aura Jade 30k + feb 2005
Second place was easily decided at Aura Jade's. Excellent composition and pose, coloring, and character portrayal.

3rd Place - Bridgechan 5k + feb 2005
3rd place was extremely tough. Even as more of sketch, we were both very fond of Bridgechan's entry. Just really well drawn, nice interactive pose, and great portrayal of Midnite and Star.

SPECIAL CATEGORIES

Best Chibi: Neko Kangi 10k
We almost didn't have a best chibi! But Kangi came up with this priceless piece. Chibi style adorable and well colored, but the idea to present us with a nakey Kakashi for our birthday well... *Star blushes & gigles whilst Midnite drools*

Best Original: Wahl 10k
Among the first to enter! I've been fond of Wahl's entry all throughout the contest. I like seeing Midnite and Star in her unique style and modern outfits. Also a very nice showing of our friendship.

Most Unique: AliceBlack 10k
Very stylish and extremely well colored entry. Costumes for a halloween party that are cat and spider theme definitely fits us.

Best Cosplay: Mighty-strawberry 10k
LOL Midnite and I both got a big kick out of this. Nicely drawn and colored in itself, but also great character comparisons using one of our favorite anime. ^__^

Best Dress: PuffyCaveman 10k
Best dress was one of those really hard categories to choose a winner for as there were so many original outfits that fit our characters. This entry that came in at the very end well deserves Best Dress. The characters themselve are niceless drawn, but the costumes really make this an impressive picture! ^__^

Best Character Depiction: AcidRain 10k
This ink piece really showed the characters personalities. Midnite protectively in front of Star and ready to fight with lightning. Also can't forget mentioning the priceless little doodle in the corner. It's very true to life. ^____^

Best Sketch: Krysil 7k
Krysil's entry had to win best sketch. The characters were very well drawn, but the whole idea was also very unique.

Special Categories may include Best Chibi, Best Sketch, Most Creative, Best Costume/Dress and will be awarded as I see fit and may receive any combination of gold and/or Letter for the Lunar/Solar Cloak.

I hold the liberty to accommodate the prizes according to the entries. I feel there are always many deserving entrants to art contests and I want to show my appreciation for your effort. I am planning to divide and give at least 200,000 in gold as prizes; as you can see, I gave myself quite a bit of leeway to raise prizes for certain categories or to be prizes for special categories or honorable mentions. It's possible even those who don't win will at least receive something as a thank you. I'm not the richest - most to all of my gold was earned by art commissions. I only wish I could afford to put more. It's my sincerest hope that, even if you don't win, that you can have fun and enjoy drawing Midnite and Star.

Story.
In the Dream Realm exist the Dream Weavers, working under the Sandman, a gentle, boy-like entity. Bad Dream Weavers Co-exist with the Good Dream Weavers, a needed balance though the two kinds often clash. Even Bad Dream Weavers, however, are scared of the Nightemare Creators. Midnite is a Bad Dream Weaver, but descended from a royal line of Nightemare Creators. Even her colleagues stay clear of her due to this connection. Midnite doesn't care. She's better off on her own. Let them come to their own conclusions. She'd even go as far to encourage their fear of her. She takes pleasure in twisting dreams to something more... unpleasant. While she is not altogether cruel, she has no qualms in inflicting pain... and sometimes enjoying it. She's disgusted by Star, a golden pixie-like Dream Weaver who's all sunshine and innocence, the type to frolic from dream to dream, weaving dreams of gardens or mermaids. Midnite may find herself in her own Nitemare when a very important mission requires her to team up with Star.

Both embark on their dangerous journey through the Dream Realms. Midnite's cold shoulder to Star slowly fades as the girl proves herself to be more than sugary fluff witha genuine ability to love and determination to protect those she considers friends. As star is targeted due to her secret lineage, Midnite starts feeling strangely protective. Star is the first to see underneath Midnite's cold exterior and an unlikely friendship forms; they become the perfect compliments to each other. After all, how can there be darkness without light or light without shadows?

Personality: Sweet, gentle, bubbly, often seems more like a child. Loves cute and cuddly things. Has a personality that draws people to her. She is not above using puppy eyes to get what she wants--especially from Midnite. Fairly simple minded, when she gets an idea in her mind, she'll stick to it. Very devoted to friends.

Modern: Based more around my real hobbies.... Bookworm, artist, writer, love to create things, sporadically will make cookies or brownies whenever the mood hits me and I'm not too lazy. Love Christmas more than any other holiday.

Favorite Colors: Black, black... and silver? Oh. Blood red.
Dream Weaver Power: Electricity/lightning (From Nitemare Creator Blood)
Personality: Usually looks cool and aloof. Gets excited by blades, blood, and spiders... Star is usually her only voice of reason in those moments and chastises her not to kill anyone. Midnite has softened since meeting Star but tries to hide it. Often looses her train of thought.
Modern: Except for cool and aloof, the above still applies lol... the real Midnite is also a bookworm, writer, but still loves blades, blood, and scaring people... Don't piss her off, but if you do, hide behind Star.

WHAT TO DRAW.
I'm giving you creative lisence based on the information given. I'd PREFER for the entries to include BOTH Midnite and Star, but if you can only draw one, that's okay. Feel free to give them a bat/angel wing such as I did or other such attributes. You don't only need to have them in their black & White outfits--one special cateogory will be most creative costume/dress afterall. Draw them chibi, draw them in fantasy, draw them modern. Draw them as battle-worm Dream Weavers; Draw them as lazy teens. If you have an idea and are not sure whether it would fit them--just ask me. If people need some ideas, I might put some up. I'll try and post more of my art of them up for reference. Note that this is for FRIENDSHIP, not relationship (though that's a whole joke in itself since we're so close and Midnite is amused if people think that... I just shake my head and sigh. What can you do with a best friend like her?)

Some ideas if you're really stuck or need to pique an idea: Gothic lolita. Crossover w/ anime or movies. Incorporate opposites in unique ways. Birthday-related theme. Setting in the Dream Realm (Dream Headquarters is on an island, ships take them to different dream dimensions). In modern/fashionable clothes that suit them. Star weaving good and pure dreams that can take you to a wonderful place outside of reality. Midnite weaving bad dreams that border on the nitemarish.

So for example, if you had the banner in your sig for two weeks without doing anything else, you could get a Stick Person. The longer you have it in your sig or the more you do other things, the higher level you can get. Bump points are so low because I think some people can get carried away with them---if you bump, make sure the contest is near the bottom of the 1st page or off the page before you do it. I rather people chat then bump. I'll grant points to people I see around alot that are aiming for a freebie. I'll make sure anyone who really tries will get at least a stick person!

All right! *exhausted* The contest is finally all set up. I still have art references I plan to put up, but I think that's good for now. I wanted to start it soon so people have some time to get started. I'll be leaving Wednesday for Thanksgiving but will be back Friday. I know if anyone else is like me and likes to draw on Holidays... here's something you can work on. ^__^

lol I skipped my speech class tonight to finish this up... but now I have to spend the night at Midnite's house and keep my big mouth shut about this. I'm bad with secrets. sweatdrop

Feel free to ask questions. I'll answer them as soon as I can.

Oh... and I'm taking art requests again around the Holidays and during this contest so might end up having more to offer for prizes... we'll have to see.

It looks like I'll have over 300,000 g in another week or so of commissions so I'm thinking about raising the prizes more... or I might just save it to go around art hunting. ^_^ Maybe both.

Awe, it'd be nice to see your version of Midnite and Star. *huggles* You need to kick back and relax every now and then.... I was tempted to work at Walden Books again.... but I got that 3x4 painting commision, possibility of mural jobs.... and heck, I just wanted the break. Christmas is my favorite season and I"m going to enjoy it without the stres... lol at least that's the goal. ^___^
