First of all, this thread is probably missplaced. I cant think of where it would go, but figured that its kind of about religion, so if you have an idea, please let me know or report the thread. Any way...

I've been thinking a lot lately about the sphinx and the history of Egypt as a whole and came accross an unusual occurance. In the 0 kingdom (before they recorded the rulers "Pharaohs" wink two nations were suddenly united. For years before that Egypt had been divided in two countries; North Egypt and South Egypt. The question that presented is; Why, after generations of deadlock, was the South Kingdom suddenly able to overtake the North?

To answer that we look at the idea that the origin of civilization is in the Middle East and North African regions. As such, Egypt would share its title of oldest civilzation with the Summarians and their city of Ur. Amungst the ancient Summarian gods was Nergal, the god of war. I believe that a Summarian Exploration team may have encountered the Egyptions of the South Kingdom (which was acctualy on the northern part of the Nile) and helped make contact with the South Kingdom and the followers of Nergal. A war themed cult would have brought new technology and moral to the warring people and give them the push they may have needed to overcome their old enimies.

Such a cult would have had some influence on the (now unified) Egyptions even after returning to their homeland. As testiment to their power, i think they built a massive monument to their god (Nergal) who was said to have the face of a man, but the body of a massive lion. Over the next few centuries the monument became demoralizing to the people of Egypt who had just joined the seperate cults of their own land into one religion. So, under the orders of an ancient Pharaoh (King Khephren, some believe) it was recomissioned in his likeness, thus becomeing the monument we know today.

Well, thats my theory. Please let me know what you think. Support of critisism. If you find my timeline is wrong PLEASE let me know. I look forward to your imput.
When I think of a Sphinx, I think of a winged monster in GREEK myhtology having a woman's head and a lion's body who killed anyone who could not answer it's riddle! But the one you're talking about to me is just and ancient image also having the body of a lion and the head of a man, ram, or a hawk! So to me, I think it is a monument of the kings power!

Some of Napoleon men were shooting at Sphinx's nose for target practace and one of them accidently shot it off. O_o
I thought Napoleon ordered to shoot of its nose, but anyway....

I think the Sphinx IS a symbol of power. Im not sure about any cults, im well aware of the Greek signifigance, and i have studied the riddle itself. But now to think broader....

The riddle: Why did the Sphinx choose that particular riddle? Yes, it is very confusing and uses plenty of metaphors, but why that? And after all the translations it has gone through, is it really the same riddle we believe it to be?
I think it was probably some kind of monument or religious statue of some kind, but not a monument to any pharoh's power. If I remember my facts, it was rather difficult to build the pyramids and sphinx, which makes it unlikely that by the time a pharoh rose to power, he would see the monument finished before his death. Which means that the succeeding pharoh would have to finish it, though he didn't really have to. I could be wrong, but it just seems more likely to me that it was a religious monument or temple of some kind, instead of a tribute to the power of a king.

xd arg! You killed my nose!

Anyway, not being a historian myself, what you claim sounds like a valid theory. Monuments were often made not only in tribute to kings, but also in tribute to the regions patron diety.
I've always thought the sphinx was a sort of protector of the pharaohs... but that's probably my whole 5-year-old perspective of lions being such great, powerful creatures... Kinda like the Chinese lions placed on either side of their doors... *shrug*

From what I understand, there are tunnels of some sort within the Sphinx. I haven't read up on it for a while, but I do remember that no one really knows what it was built for. It may, as someone said, be a symbol of protection. Or perhaps it is the image of a god or goddess that came before the Egyptian gods and goddesses that we know. What is known is that the Sphinx came before the pyramids--long before. It may have been built as a symbolic divide between the land belonging to Set and Osiris.
What do you think it was for? What are most iconic images for? A celebration of a diety of course along with a hint of vanity from the current king (face having the king's features).

The Egyptians and the Greeks traded with eachother. The egyptians learned about the shpinx from the Greeks and the Greeks learned how to build their buildings from the egyptians.

I don't think it was some random cult that was there to help defeat an enemy. My money is on the Greeks because there is evidence of a Greek influence in Egyptian art and an Egyptian influence in Greek architecture.
Personally, I think it was just a monument to an egotistical Pharoh. Pretty cool looking monument though. I would love to go to Egypt some day and see the pyramids and such.
they built it for a bet with the persians. they won 10,000 gold.
