As the second son of a lower middle class family, Hiro really didn't have many expectations placed on him. His name is a hope that his parents had for his life, a life filled with prosperity. The only thing he ever truly prospered at was learning how to skate through life with the bare minimum. His older brother was the support beam for their family with his job as an office manager, which meant Hiro could just focus on having fun with his friends. His parents never seemed to care anyway, not until Hiro said he didn't want to go to high school. But in the end, he managed to avoid going back to school by promising to get a job instead to help support the family.
Hiro got a job with the uncle of one of his friends. It seemed easy enough; all he really had to do was carry packages around town for the man and he was able to get (most of) a decent paycheck to give to his parents. A few months passed by this way and Hiro was finally getting used to the pace of life- until one day he rode back to his employer's store and found it deserted. There was a note taped to the door with his name on it. All it said was that the man would never be able to come back to this town because the police had finally caught onto him and that Hiro needed to hide somewhere fast before the yakuza found him. The sixteen year old didn't know what to do, but he knew enough about the yakuza to guess that they would come after him if he said what little he knew. But if he kept quiet, the police would never leave his family alone.
He ended up pedaling along a bridge, mindlessly following one of his most commonly used delivery routes. The longer he stared at the ocean below, the more inviting the waves looked. It was winter, so no one would be tempted to jump in and try to save him. The bike was easily stowed away, then Hiro took off his sweater and stuffed it into the bike's basket. His grandmother had made it for him and he didn't want to ruin it. Should he send one last message before jumping? It would only be fair to warn his family, so he sent them a group message saying that he would miss them but he didn't want to burden them. Hiro climbed over the side of the railing and took in a deep breath as he tried to think of how he ought to aim himself to achieve the quickest death. The voice of a girl (and the feeling of her hands on his) interrupted his thoughts and he looked up to see her shouting at him about the importance of life and how he didn't need to kill himself over what was probably a small matter. She managed to persuade him to get back up onto the bridge, but when he reached up to grab her hand, a man pulled her away and his hands brushed against Hiro's.
Did he fall off or was he pushed by that man? The question feels so important to him- it's the difference between being too weak to pick himself back up even after receiving help or being helpless when seeing someone else face danger. Sometimes he still sees those hands in his dreams, reaching out or clawing at the girl's arm. With a weakened grip and no real upper body strength in the first place, Hiro plummeted into the freezing ocean. But he had attracted enough attention with the help of the girl (and man, in a way) to make bystanders call for an ambulance before he hit the water. Hiro woke up that night in a hospital bed, surrounded by his family. However, none of them knew who the girl or man he had interacted with were.
He has been following what few clues or stories he could grasp about people who look like the girl or the man who had snatched her away, and the trail has lead him to the Sohmas. Hiro is pretty sure they're some freaky cult, but if he can get the girl away from a cult, then he's saving her life too, isn't he? He tried sneaking into the Sohma estate once. When he got caught, he insisted he just wanted to see if there was anything of cultural significance, which was what Google Maps had told him. That excuse obviously didn't let him stay for too long, but now he knows what the actual layout looks like. Is he going to try sneaking back in? Oh definitely, but he has enough sense to do it more carefully next time... and hopefully with the help of someone on the inside.
