With a family legacy of killing gods, it's no surprise that Jiàn followed in his family's footsteps. His family has been a longstanding part of an organization with goals similar to Tutamen- perhaps even one of the first few families who fully pledged their entire line to the cause. Jiàn's particular branch thought it was time to spread out from China and see whether the gods would try staking a claim on the US. It was an easy way to strengthen ties with their brethren in the US. California already had such a high Chinese population, and the Huangs assimilated easily. Despite not being told of this legacy for the first fifteen years of his life, his parents made sure to prepare both of them. He and his elder sister were in various sports and even took multiple martial arts courses. Both were given the option to join Tutamen, rather than the Chinese organization the family was originally part of since they were now in the US. Jiàn accepted, but his sister didn't because she preferred to live a normal life instead.
He never understood why she would want something so boring, especially once he started training with other future hunters. It was the closest they could get to becoming martial arts movie stars without worrying about box office sales. But the family respected her wishes. In the end, it didn't even keep her safe from the gods. Confronting her face to face confirmed his fear- she had been taken over by a god. Nezha begged him to let them (them? There could be no coexistence between the two) go and he would never bother Tutamen or contact another god. It was all lies. Of course it was. He and his sister had agreed years ago that the idea of being manipulated by a god was repulsive. He couldn’t let her body be used by that parasite.
Jiàn took care of destroying the god inhabiting her body so his parents wouldn't have to and his sister would be at peace. That's what he told himself, but he couldn't muster up the courage to go back home.
So instead he built a new life centered on Tutamen and killing gods. His time in the school for hunters worked to his advantage since he did well enough and knew enough people from there to get placed onto new teams immediately. However his methods were considered extreme and he would often ignore his leader’s commands in favor of making sure a god never came back. Acting out in other teams lead to Jiàn’s placement on Fade’s team, and he was warned that his grief over his sister would no longer be considered when assessing his actions. He’s sure Tutamen only kept him because his family has been in their sister organization for centuries and it wasn’t worth risking the organization’s wrath.
He was entirely focused on these missions, until he found a turtle abandoned on the sidewalk in front of his apartment. While it would be overdramatic to say she saved him, she definitely helped him find something else to invest his time into. He ended up buying and raising chickens as well from a farm that was being foreclosed. It’s actually... nice having something to focus on that had nothing to do with him. Slowly but surely, he’s learning to take a step back from the god-killing business. Very slowly.

Huang Jiàn's grandparents were the typical immigrants who managed to obtain the American dream. They built a restaurant and slowly but surely saved enough funds to move from the cramped apartment above their restaurant to a proper home. The restaurant stayed within the family. The sound of frying vegetables being tossed around a wok is one of Jiàn's first memories. Another early memory is filled with the smell of incense in his mother's hair and the feeling of something sticky on her hands and arms as she rocked him to sleep.
Jiàn's family has been part of an organization similar to Tutamen for a long time- perhaps even one of the first few families who fully pledged their entire line to the cause. Jiàn's particular branch thought it was time to spread out from China and see whether the gods would try staking a claim on the US. California already had such a high Chinese population, and the Huangs slipped in easily. Jiàn and his elder sister learned to adjust between their Chinese community and the surrounding society of the US, because their parents made sure to emphasize the importance of both. Their organization's goals were never mentioned until both children became teenagers, but they were trained in various martial arts and participated in sports to increase their stamina.
Jiàn prides himself on his skills, both related to fighting gods and his hobbies. While some would chalk it up to talent, he insists that it's all due to hard work and his fierce sense of competition. But even with his skills, his mouth often gets him into trouble with others. Ignoring authority in favor of accomplishing a goal doesn't get someone far, but Jiàn is stubborn enough to keep trying because he believes that there are just goals that must happen- no matter the cost. He was disappointed that his jiě jie didn't choose to join Tutamen or even the Chinese organization but the family respected her wishes. He would always tease her about losing the opportunity to become one of the action movie stars she looked up to when she was younger.
He never thought she would become a Vessel. He never thought he would have her blood on his hands.
He hasn't gone back home since then. Tutamen is his home now, for better or worse. His desire to eradicate the gods has grown stronger than ever.
- He received the Ruyi Jingu Bang from his parents when he managed to take down his first god. It was a minor god, and Jiàn almost lost his eyesight in the process, but Iris can never use the rainbow again.
- He has received a reputation for being thorough, almost to the point of cruelty, when making sure a god is dead. One can never be too sure.
- So far, he has only killed or helped kill 4 minor gods while on the field, but he has contributed info which has lead to the death of greater gods. His surprising efficiency against the gods earned him his nickname, since the Titans were the greatest threat the Greek gods had ever faced.
- He'll never admit it, but he's incapable of sleeping without hugging keeping something between his arms.
PROMPT: "your character is faced with a moral dilemma-- one of their loved ones has become a vessel. Do they kill them? Do they let them escape? How do they react?"
Fiona flipped through the pages of the report. It was an overcomplicated case, but the results were too good to dismiss entirely. The operative needed assessment and rather than delegate it to a psychiatrist, Fiona wanted to meet the man herself. An assistant brought in Jiàn and Fiona waved the other woman back out before turning her focus to him. His eyes were glassy and distant as they met her gaze, but he physically seemed no worse for wear. She gestured at him to sit and he complied, resting his right arm on the armrest.
“Are you ready to begin?” Fiona asked. Jiàn straightened up in his seat with a barely noticeable wince and nodded.
“The details of the fight should be clear in my written report. I took out a minor god on civilian ground with minimal destruction and that’s all there is to say. Another victory for Tutamen,” he replied.
“I’ve heard that your parents, longstanding Tutamen members themselves, have tried to reach out to you but you refuse to answer them.”
“Well it’s hard to look them in the eyes and tell them I killed their oldest child,” Jiàn snapped, still maintaining eye contact. Fiona looked back at him placidly, and he ended up pulling away first with a snarl under his breath.
“Your sister wasn’t one of ours, but she knew the risks of holding a… god within her, didn’t she?” All children of Tutamen knew the signs of possession and the importance of reporting them.
“Maybe she thought she was safe because it was a Chinese god.” Jiàn let out a deep sigh. “Not that it protected her from losing herself.” He plucked at the stray threads of his torn sleeve and Fiona remembered that this had all happened earlier today. She took out one of the water bottles she stored in her bottom drawer and slid it across the table. He grabbed the bottle and gulped down the contents within a few seconds.
Silence settled between them. Jiàn stared at the bottle in his hand. Fiona debated sending him back home, until he suddenly crushed the bottle.
“She called me dìdi. Little brother. She never called me that once I turned eleven; I was Jiàn to her from then on. That’s how I knew it really wasn’t her.” His red-rimmed eyes were still focused on the bottle.
“Maybe she said it to tip you off that it was too late for her. What was left of her.¬” Empty statements of reassurance bubbled up her throat, with easy condolences always resting in the back of her mind for the families of dead operatives. They were doing what had to be done, they were the bravest operatives on the mission, and don’t worry about living expenses because Tutamen always looks after its own. But how could those words apply to an operative who had to kill his sister to destroy a Vessel?
“You aren’t a monster, Jiàn. Nezha was described as a protective deity, but if it truly cared, then it would’ve never picked a Vessel.”
“There is no justice in suffering.” He pushed himself upright and shuffled out the door. Fiona let him have his dramatic moment, then started making calls to move him to a new area. The change in scenery would do him good.
