In his earliest of memories, it was just the three of them. His father would take him fishing or sailing while his mother slept and when they got home his mother would have dinner with them. One of the most vivid of these memories was when he had snuck out of bed to try and watch tv in the living room, peeking his head inside the room he knew he wouldn’t be able to. His parents were dancing to a soft melodied song, his father’s back to him but his mother’s head clearly resting on his shoulder. They whispered and laughed but never moved to stop their dance, it made him almost gag at the time but he came to miss such sights.

Not long after he became a ‘big boy’ in his parent’s eyes did his father take leave to work on the sea. Cristo was there to send him off, unfortunately his mother was still asleep when he was scheduled to depart. And so began his new life of an absent father and a mostly comatose mother.

For a little while he remained the kid his parents wanted him to be, went to school and stayed home. But it didn’t take long before he became bored and lonely with this kind of life, and he wasn’t a particularly popular kid. So instead he turned to acting very unlike himself to get the attention he was so starved for. Getting in fights, doing bad in school, vandalizing, stealing, and spitting insults at anyone who met his eye. And every time he went too far with his antics he would be dragged home by some authority and wait for his mother to awake, forced to watch as his mother begged for forgiveness on her son's behalf. When they left she would cry and make Cristo to promise he would be good, but those promises never lasted.

This behavior would stretch out for years, only ever wavering when his father would return for a bit. Then, eventually even that failed to curb his behavior. After years of buildup, the news of his mother’s pregnancy put him into a frenzy of anger. They would dare to bring another child into this kind of household?! Wasn’t his life proof enough that it was a cruel way of life?! He couldn’t take another moment of being in that house. He ran with no hesitation, not looking back.

He lived on the streets of the nearest city, stealing and doing what he had to do to survive. Eventually a local gang picked him up, he became a part of a brotherhood. They made Cristo feel as if he belonged, and they always seemed to need him. He got their tattoo, he did as was told, he celebrated victories, cursed his enemies, and built up an attitude fitting such a life. He could feel his mother’s presence in his dreams, but he blocked her from manifesting, denying her his company. A year he went on like this, and he relished in it for a while.

Maybe it was because this was not his true nature, but he eventually came to tire of such a life. It made his heart ache when he had to turn blubbering women away with snarls, who only called out for their sons or brothers to return home. It chipped away it him, he felt it in his soul that his own mother did the same. The needless cruelty also began to wane on him as well. One day he just couldn’t take it anymore, and he left the city behind to return home. Knowing full well he could not return to his gang, as they would kill him for deserting. But what did he care? The sea and the villa beckoned him home.

It was almost nightfall when he came upon the doorstep, all it took was a soft knock upon the wood for the door to swing wide open. Before Cristo could say a word his mother’s arms were around him and soon after were his father’s. The teen came to realize how much he had missed them, he had been such a fool before. Cristo’s face was showered in kisses before the Sandwoman had to return to the world of dreams, but his father eagerly introduced Cristo to his baby sister.

Her bright gold-brown eyes looked up at him and he felt something deep inside him, a true utter change. Cristo loved his sister with all he had, almost crying when her tiny hands reached out to him with a smile. Even if his parents weren’t near, he would forever have her with him, someone he himself could be there for. He had been a fool to runaway at the news. Cristo became determined not long after his return to be his best, be reliable. He graduated high school, took care of his sister as well as mother, got a job, and did his best to repair the damage the year absence had created. Even now he still does the same.
