OO1. X ▬ ♔ x ) x nick was precisely seven years old when his mother died on a plane crash to florence. at the time, he was too young to truly understand what was happening considering death was a very confusing subject for a young boy but was very curious. in the beginning, nick in his childish mindset, thought it was a holiday he hadn't been told about because people were showing up at his door one by one with flowers and homemade lemon squares. however, when two days had passed and his mother had not come home he demanded answers from his father. much to nick's dismay, the only thing his father would tell him was that "she left" which only gathered more hurt and confusion. thinking she would come back because she missed him, nick spent day after day waiting for her by the door at 5:15 pm (the time she always used to show up home from work) only to be filled with pain when she didn't arrive. of course at this point, stirling cortese was starting to believe that his son's hope for his late wife's return was going on all too long, so finally he confronted nick and told him the truth; that his mother had died. but in a surprising twist of events, nick didn't believe him. to him, daddy lied about a lot of things like he had lied about santa and the easter bunny. though, the realness of the situation finally hit when nick saw the plant his mother had showered with love, the one she cared for like a second child, on the kitchen counter withered and devoid of any life. it was then that nick finally realized his mother was gone for good. without a mother, nick's hardships as a child only intensified. his father was always piled high with work and never remarried, leaving nick to practically raise himself. he liked to think he was his own mother, considering the fact that his real mother wouldn't be coming back. he was sure she was happy where she was but, he couldn't think about her because all of her memories filled him with hurt and pain. mother's day's were always hard for him, though as hurt as he was he never shed a single only responding "she's gone" when people asked him why he wasn't busy making a card. because of that void in his life, he dated several girls. this leads some people to think he is a manwhore but the real reason is because the feeling of love is something nick doesn't come across a lot and when it finds it's way to him, he holds on to it as tight and long as he can, constantly in fear that the love he feels will stomp on his heart and leave him just as his mother did. this and only this, is the sole reason nick has trouble being close to people; he is scared they will slip through his fingers like a coin through a sewer grate.
OO2. X ▬ ♔ x ) x a couple years back, nick's father ran for mayor and won. it seems perfectly legitimate, but the thing is most people don't know is that he didn't win fairly. nick's family had been in politics for over 4 generations and were all very powerful and successful politicians at that, so when stirling was flipping channels and saw that the polls were not in his favor, he took matters into his own hands. in his eyes, he wasn't about to lose just because some polls said he would. two days before the election, the man hatched a plan. nick doesn't like to talk details but the ballots were tampered with and rigged in his father's favor. the job was done expertly and little suspicions have arose since then. but the guilt deriving from the fraud is slowly consuming him...
OO3. X ▬ ♔ x ) x nick's father has been trying to mold him into the perfect heir to his legacy for as long as he can remember. he'd be allowed to skip school on some occasions to visit the mayor's office with his father to take tours. some days he'd even let nick sit behind his desk in his special chair, a place where not even the highest ranking employees have ever sat. he did this because he wanted nick to become the next mayor, something nick never wanted to do, ever. stirling wanted nick to be in charge everywhere, in life, on project of his friends. but nick hated being in charge and the fact that his father hinted that he try and over throw matthew as head of the f4 disgusted him. he didn't want to be head of the f4 or like his father, throwing people, his closest friends, under the bus like yesterday's stepped on newspaper. plus, power corrupted people and the last thing nick wanted to be was just another bad piece of fruit growing from his ever-corrupted family tree of people willing to back stab others to get to the top.
OO4. X ▬ ♔ x ) x nick is on his phone twenty-four seven. this is not because he is constantly waiting for gossip girl to update (because quite frankly nick could give too shits about the attention whore exploiting the secrets of everyone's personal lives simply to bemuse "itself" ) but because, as of recently a person with an incredibly raspy disguised voice has been calling, texting and iming nick non-stop. whenever someone asks about who calls, nick tells them the stuff everyone has been believing for months but only nick really knows that the person calling him has been blackmailing him, threatening to spill what he/she knows about the night nick's father was elected.
