There was once a time when the world was pure. Where there was no radiation in the air. Where people lived in an easy sort of peace without the fear of mutant attacks, or worse - a visit from an assassin. They said that there were oceans and forests, and a sky that was a beautiful, clear blue. It’s hard to imagine now. In this country, there are no oceans. No forests and no blue sky. There’s nothing but gray clouds and stone buildings. My parents told me that this happened because of the war. Forty years ago, there was a huge war in the continent that was once North America. There had been too many people wanting power, wanting a way to control the general population. It was only a matter of time before the bombs started to fly.

In the span of four years, old North America was gone. The skies turned gray from the bombs, the forests evaporated from the radiation, and the animals ... they mutated. Became monsters that had a taste for human blood. It was then that the new rules of New America saw the need for protection. Another way to keep people under their control. Fear was one of the greatest weapons to yield, after all. Soon enough, towns were erected. They were kept safe from the monsters with a machine; a crystal that repelled the monsters and made the air clean. They were erected in the centre of every town, and the people fell in line as soon as they thought they would be safe.

It didn’t even take forty years for the government to become corrupt. It was small, at first. Letting the rich live closer to the Crystal, giving them the most protection and the freshest air. The poorer people lived on the borders. Many of them died before they reached their 18th birthday, either from the radioactive air or the monsters that were able to breach the crystal’s tenuous hold at the border.

But then, the government began chipping away at the crystals. Putting them into their soliders, to make them incredibly strong. They could kill people with a punch, run across the entire city in five minutes flat (perhaps I’m exaggerating a bit but still…). They became the enforcers of the government, and people now not only lived in peace ... they lived in constant fear, because the government would use those men for anything and everything. If you were suspected to be a terrorist? You were taken by them and tortured. If you were suspected of not living in the incredibly strict rules set by the government? You were hauled in and killed. Made a public example of. People soon became cut-out versions of themselves. They ran on the efficient clockwork of government rules, not thinking, not living. Just surviving.

It seemed only inevitable that an organization would rise up against. They called themselves ‘White Lily’. In rumors, they were mentioned to be the human incarnations of the old Greek gods. Murderers who would come to you in the middle of the night and try and take you, to convert you to their side. They wanted the government gone, because they wanted to control. They wanted to be the ones to tell us what to do. Made up of ex-soldiers and people who had nowhere else to go, it’s rumored that they are the most dangerous people in the world. It’s rumored that they existed even before the war.

Ha. I’ll believe it when I see it. People say that there’s another war coming, one between those two powers. I say, let them at it. The assassins, well. They seem the lesser o better or what have you, of two evils, but I could less care either way. We’re all going to die, one day. Why bother on the details. We’re already in Hell.
