It was a bright, frosty morning. The pavement glistened like a carpet of crushed diamonds in the early morning sunshine. Penelope made her way through the park amid the suburban neighborhood she lived in, humming along to a tune that played through a pair of pretty pink earbuds emerging from her thick, woolly scarf. This was the way she took to school every morning. She was wrapped up warm against the icy fingers of winter. It was the most beautiful time of year, her favourite in fact, and she could tell it was going to be a good day.

"Stop it you’re killing him," she cried helplessly. Lucifer stopped, and looked at her with a cold stare. There was no mercy in his eyes as he brushed aside a stray hair that had fallen across her face. "Why should I?" He asked, sounding genuinely puzzled. She opened her mouth to speak, but she dared not answer his question, she could only stare at him in horror. There was nothing she could have said that would have changed her fate. "You believe in the lies you feed to the outside, and for that I owe you nothing." That was probably the most Lucifer had spoken in months. The silence that followed was broken by a bloodcurdling scream. He looked down at the girl who had doubled over at his feet, overcome with pain and retching violently. Blood began to run from her ears and nose, and in a matter of minutes she had succumbed in a crumpled heap on the floor. She was the last, and now he was all that remained.

Lucifer woke with a start, the vivid imagery from his dream still playing through his mind as he came to. This was normal to him and yet he still needed to remind himself to take long, deep breaths to regain stability. His body was cold and clammy from the sweat that soaked through his clothes. A shiver ran down his spine as the brisk wind nipped at the exposed skin of his forearms and face. I should have taken one of their coats. He thought as he pulled his legs to his chest and hugged his knees for a brief moment of warmth. There was no telling what time it was, Lucifer had lost all track of the days and hours and depended on his best guess to get him by, not that it really mattered. Little did he know it was early morning, the sun was just beginning to rise over the buildings of New Orleans and there was somewhere he needed to be. Where? He didn't know, but he would soon find out.

Lucifer had been on the run for about a week. It was evident by now what had happened, but would they be looking for him? He doesn't actually know who 'they' are, but he didn't want to stick around to find out, so he left Washington. No news of the incident reached his ears in his travels, but he made sure to lay low regardless in case there was a warrant out for him...or something like that. He didn't really understand how the law works, but he figured staying out of sight would benefit everyone in the long run. However, dawning on the eighth day of his escape, Lucifer was lured away by sights he could have never conceived possible. Once he had managed to come to his senses, Lucifer forced himself up off of the rubble he had been sleeping on and took a moment to stretch. He was sore beyond compare. His days of trekking through the states did not leave him feeling invigorated, but his new found freedom kept him going.

Hunger and thirst were his biggest problems. Because of this, Lucifer ventured into the French quarter and marveled at it's bright colours and beautiful decor. By now the sun was well into the sky and the sidewalks were full with people of all varieties. He couldn't help but stare, everything fascinated him to such a degree that drawing attention to himself didn't matter anymore. As Lucifer watched the crowd from a reasonable distance, something familiar caught the corner of his eye, something...blonde? It wasn't just any regular blonde, but it couldn't be her... His mind raced as he made his way towards the shop he had seen her enter moments ago. It had to be a coincidence, the odds of him seeing her there of all places, when he last saw her in Washington, were next to zero. Lucifer approached the shop window and pressed his hands against the glass to get a good look. It was difficult to see through the glare of the sun, but once he found sight of her, his jaw dropped. It was her.

                                                                                User Image

Just like that, they were together again. Jude resumed her motherly role and took care of him in the time leading up to the meeting, and for that Lucifer was very grateful. He tried to show her how much it meant to him by helping her around the house, but his efforts seemed to have the opposite affect seeing as he had no idea what he was doing most of the time. It was just as much of a surprise to him as it was to Jude that they were both being recruited to fight in a war. Things were happening quickly and Lucifer was unsure of his next move, but naturally he followed Jude. He trusted her more than anyone he had ever known, although, he couldn't quite put his finger on it. Why did he trust someone who left him behind all those years ago? Did she not know what they were doing to him? She must have...She was there with me... His head was swarming with questions, but he didn't want to ask her, denial was his friend. These thoughts didn't help to improve his mood in light of his current situation.

Lucifer's breath caught in his throat as Jude took hold of his hand and gave it a gentle squeeze; memories of their time spent together in the facility he had been contained in flooded his mind. She had done the same thing back in those days to help calm him down, and it had had desirable results then, and now. After she had mentioned the twins and he had sworn not to breath a word about them (for reasons he didn't quite understand) to anyone, the two of them 'faced the music' as she had put it. Of course, Lucifer didn't get what she meant until they walked into the meeting room and faced the many people that looked their way. There was no telling how he might feel walking into this predicament. Jude on the other hand, had a very different approach. He observed their little rendezvous with curiosity. Lucifer had never seen people act this way with each other before, it was always strictly professional aside from the way that Jude acted with her twins, but that was very different. He couldn't determine how he felt about any of it, feeling apart from everyone else in a strange way made him quiet. Instead of voicing a greeting like the others seemed to be doing, Lucifer backed himself into a corner and observed the behaviors around him.

Two minutes past 6:00am and Sawyer had already showered, shaved, and dressed for his first day back to school. In his haste he even refused breakfast - who turns down a free meal? He always ate and he ate well. Someone as excited as sawyer was to return to school after a few months of summer vacation had to be high on something. His time at home had it's fun; he worked a full time job for the majority of his break to occupy his time and spent his weekends with friends. Hard work paid off for him; he used every last scent of his earnings to help pay for his new car - also a gift from his parents as they paid for half of it.

Sawyer took a long inhale of that new car smell as he reclined behind the wheel. He had a great view of the school's front entrance and the tree his car sat under provided plenty of shade; he had the best parking space. He watched as a couple of people here and there walked up, none looking as happy to be there as he did. Most would find that peculiar - hell, even Sawyer thinks it's strange, but he knows that he would rather be in the company of a variety of real people than the pretenders at home. Plus, he'd get to see Maddie, and a whole bunch of other attractive people - that's all that matters, no? Somewhere around 6:30am Sawyer became heavy-eyed and decided to dose off for a while with his feet up on the dash. He felt all too comfortable nestled into the plush fabric of his seat, with the sun radiating off of the black paint and the sticky hot breeze cooling the side of is cheek.

When his cell phone buzzed in the pocket of his jeans he was very reluctant to retrieve it. If he could guess who it was, not answering it would have dire consequences. Sawyer shifted his position and pulled his phone out - sure enough, it was his best friend, Mads.

                                                                To: Mads
                                                                From: Sawyer
                                                                Msg: I'm not coming.
I had a wardrobe crisis, go on without me.

He sent the text message with a big smirk on his face. It's not a total lie... He thought as he looked down at his plain t-shirt and dark jeans. Most of his clothes were this way; dark, plain, and boring, but he's been told that his pants show off his bum rather nicely - which he appreciated. Sawyer gathered his things from the passenger side and climbed out of his car. It would have been wise of him to check himself in the rear-view mirror; little did he know that his hair had gotten a little out of hand during his nap. Some sections were flat, others were sticking out at odd angles. Couldn't hurt if he didn't know, right?

Sawyer's excitement increased as he approached the front doors. He figured if Maddie was just getting here she'd need to pick up her schedule, so he hoped to wander the halls and find her in that general area. That, and he also needed to grab his own - two birds stoned at once. It didn't take long to find her since she was usually the more well dressed of the bunch. He knew it was her by the way she walked down the hallway, that hypnotizing hip sway that he loved so much. Sawyer crept up behind her and gently took a strand of her hair, leaning in to take an exaggerated sniff. "Mmm, you smell good. You got any food? I'm starving."

Cassius was born into a family that was able for war. In accordance to tradition each of their strongest male ancestors took part in the war that plagued their kingdom for years, and so it became favorable in their clan to raise strong sons. Sadly this meant terrible and unmentionable things for the weak ones, who often wouldn't live to see their second or third year. Shortly before Cassius was born, the better part of the battle had ended and a merger was formed between the kingdoms; yet everyone anticipated that more would follow, and they were eagerly preparing themselves for it.

Tension remained among the people for many years as they took it upon themselves to bend over backwards in order to coexist with each other. While many of them had stuck together with their own species, others had disbanded completely and fled for safer territories. Cass remained loyal to his family and chose to stay close with his friends, he never mixed well with the others; generally speaking he just kept to himself and did as he was told. Not once in his life had he been asked what his thoughts were about the whole mess of things, or where he stood in all of it - so naturally he grew to doubt a lot of things as he became older. His feelings, like slow burning flames licking at him from the inside, were hidden away deep within himself.

A day did come when his perspective on the world finally changed, and he had to face the consequences that followed.

Fast forward to present day, and it had been dragging on for hours; feeling long and dreary in it's absence of excitement. As a guardian, or otherwise known as a warrior, Cassius followed protocol day in and day out. Which was a boring life, robbed of his compelling title considering the most he did on a good day was handle some melodramatic drama between his own people. They were a well known species for their quick tempers. As soon as the sun began to set he abandoned his post and could retire for the evening, which he could have spent doing a number of things since it was his busiest time of day, but something elsewhere caught his attention.

Four others were huddled together off in the distance, and Cass recognized the two of them that seemed to be waving him over. "There he is, I told you he'd come through this way." He overheard as he approached, obviously they had been waiting for him. "What's going on? You look about ready to rob a bank." Cass stood a few feet from them now, and he could sense that they were up to no good. He became very easily intrigued. "Are you in, or are you not? We've been waiting all day..." One of the men he'd never met spoke forcefully, clearly impatient. "Just follow us, I'll fill you in on the way there." The one he knew mumbled as the bunch of them began stalking off. Cassius was inclined to refuse, only he was far too curious at that point.

It was a far walk, darkness was well underway by the time they reached the boarder of their kingdom and crossed into the next. His curiosity grew ever bigger, but he remained silent until they reached a point and stopped abruptly. There was nothing nearby that he could see, but there was much he could hear and assumed that's why they had stopped. "They're close." One said as he scanned the area. "Who is close? Are we meeting someone?" They had yet to 'fill him in', so Cass leaned into the shoulder of his friend to ask. Suddenly the two men to his left that he had never met before shifted and went tearing through the trees ahead of them, followed by the two friends to his right in the same course of action. What the hell... He thought in aggravation as he shifted himself and followed after them.

Everything happened faster after that. By the time Cass had caught up to them they were wrestling two young women to their knees with burlap sacs over their heads, and not for the reason you might think. Cass came to an abrupt halt only a few feet from them and stood utterly perplexed with his mouth gaping open. "What is this?" It took a few minutes before he could properly form words, but when he spoke there was a definite vexation notable in his tone. The others all turned to him in unison, each with a puzzling expression of their own - as if he were the crazy one among them. "You ask a lot of dumb questions, kid." The eldest of the four snarled through gritted teeth.

For reasons unclear, Cassius pushed through the other few to reach the one seemingly in charge of the bunch, and without a second thought he shoved him hard to the ground and pinned him in the dirt. Snarling broke out between the others as what Cass had done sunk it, and before they were on top of him he had sunk his teeth deep into the throat of the larger male beneath him in a fit of rage. Through the whole process it was unclear to him why he was behaving in such a way, something inside himself had begun to burn deep and he let the feeling engulf him before his thoughts had come through. A few moments into the brawl and his whole world went black.

The next time he woke, his surroundings were different and unfamiliar. The first thing he saw was a soft glow of warm light flickering on the ceiling above him, a candle perhaps, and for a moment he watched as it danced across the surface. The sudden pang of his wounds hit him like a ton of bricks, and he was overcome by the shock of it all that he had began to wince profusely before he had even the time to address his surroundings. He wanted to sit up, to do anything but lay there and bleed to death in a strange place, and so he began to push through the pain in order to claw his way out of the cot and onto the floor. Drops of blood began to drip from his matted fur as he stumbled and swayed, causing quite a commotion as he bumped into this and that - knocking things over as he pushed himself into a corner. Where am I? I'm obviously not dead yet... His mind was racing to keep up with the beating of his heart. His mind became flooded with instant memories of what had happened before he blacked out, and...and...

He wasn't alone. Cass whipped his head to the side and stared into the distance, sure enough, he could make out two shadowy silhouettes staring back at him, and a deep, low snarl escaped from him.

The fur of his back stood on end from the tentative touch of the woman's delicate hand. Everything the two of them had said registered clearly, and if it hadn't been for his unavoidable communication barrier he would have said plenty as well; instead he could only express himself through a series of growls, grunts, and barks. Cassius was wedged into the corner, so close you could swear he was trying to climb the wall. How could he trust these women when he had witnessed what they could do to the likes of his kind? They were cunning, and rather smart about it too, which his friends seemed to lack in massive quantities. Otherwise he wouldn't have gotten into this mess in the first place. Sadly, he knew he couldn't blame them entirely; that would be too easy.

Cassius shifted his eyes back and forth from one woman to the other. Their mouths were moving but his hearing had become fuzzy, so he shook his head aggressively with a nasty snarl; his temper was rising quickly. They appeared to be genuinely concerned - and nervous, but there was an absence of trust that he needed in order to give in to their pleas. Drool oozed from between his fangs as he bore them to the ladies, warning them to quit antagonizing him with their hesitant words and advances. This was all becoming a little too weird for him and he would have given anything to be able to run away from it entirely.

Cass's breathing became suddenly more laboured as he fought against his anger and turmoil. He wanted to believe that all of this was from the goodness of their hearts and his own, but everything he had been taught told him otherwise and he was in no way at the capacity to handle this information. Which, when broken down, really just meant that his thoughts and opinions weren't his own. He was fed lies to build hatred for those he never truly knew, and raised in ignorance to become arrogant in his own right. Trusting them would mean abandoning everything he ever lived for.

The tension continued to build up inside him, until in that moment he decided that he had had enough. About as swift as he could manage, Cassius launched himself forwards with staggering might. The pain shot through him like nothing he had ever felt before, but it then gradually began to feel more like pins and needles - or sharp paper cuts - than a serious wound. His blood, thick and darker than that of a humans, had smeared onto the leg of the blonde who had removed her hand from him promptly as he went stumbling about like a big oaf. It was to no one's surprise when, after a minute or two of tearing about the room, he went crashing into a nearby table; breaking it into pieces with his weight. What little strength he had mustered with the help of adrenaline had vanished, and his vision became blurred and out of focus. The temptation was suddenly to hard to resist, and he found himself drifting into a darkness that soothed him.

                                                                                User Image

Cassius woke once more to the familiar aroma and faint glow of a lit candle nearby, it's flickering light dancing as the crisp morning breeze entered through an open window. Something was noticeably different in the best kind of way; he felt eerily peaceful, and yet out of place. There was something more to it as well - his senses - they were alive with all the scents and sounds about the place. His vision too had been repaired. All in all he felt much better, but how is that possible? Even for a werewolf with invigorating healing abilities it would take much more than a single night to heal the wounds he was left with. HAS it only been one night...? He thought skeptically as he dared himself to sneak a look around the room.

He remembered everything in such a clarity that frightened him, considering the state he was in when he had blacked out. It wasn't even a question at that point; it definitely wasn't a dream. In view of the fact that Cass was completely alone he wasted no time in getting out of bed and onto his feet again. It felt good to stretch out his limbs now that the pain had diminished almost completely and only a dull stiffness remained. However, he couldn't help but mull over the idea that maybe he had been asleep for more than one night. How did I fall asleep in the first place...? He mused as he took a gander around the room. A wooden hutch on the far wall to his right held what looked to be some possessions of value, and although he was intrigued beyond belief, there was something he had been itching to do since he had awoken. Without any further hesitation caused by doubts, Cassius began to shift and take form to his human body.

The process took hardly any time at all, and was relatively painless considering what his body had to go through to make the change. He did find himself in a rather compromising condition at the most inopportune time however, as his shift had left him stark nude from head to toe. Cass took another look around and settled on wrapping a thin throw blanket around his waist and tying it at his hip; it would have to do. His mind jogged back to the hutch he had took notice of a few minutes ago and casually approached it with curiosity. Sitting on top - among other things - sat a few photographs in frames, one of which held a picture of two very familiar women. Cass began to chew on the inside of his cheek - something he often did while in deep thought - and raised an eyebrow; they were indeed stunning.

It was nearly dawn when Cassius lumbered reluctantly out of a deep and peaceful sleep. Lately he'd been sleeping like a dog - no pun intended - and he was thankful for it. Some people speculate that it's because the man spends most of his time outside. There's something about all that ample country air that can really wear you out. There were other theories as to why he hadn't been sleeping that great for the last couple of months that he refused to discuss with anyone, not even with Marco; he was the only person aside from Jude who knew where Cass had come from but he still didn't want to cross that line with either of them. Trust was an issue, not that he had any reason to believe that these people were any danger to him; on the contrary actually, since Jude had saved his life in the last year. He tries very hard to put up a front by being an affable person.

Cassius reveled in the warmth of his bedroom as he got to his feet at a snail's pace, taking the time to stretch his limbs and rub the sleep form his eyes before sauntering out in search of the nearest bathroom. Without checking the time he guessed it was around noon, he could tell by the placement of the sun and the stillness of the house. He definitely over slept. Cass was usually among the first few awake and out the door by the first light of day. He didn't want to waste anymore of what precious good weather they had left. Showering took no time at all, which left him with plenty of time to pull together an ensemble for the day - in consideration that he had no set plans; just go with the flow, or something like that.

The hair however, took a little coaxing. After a minute or two of prepping, the result was tolerable and Cass flitted about the house grabbing whatever else he needed before making his leave. As he closed the front door behind him, he drew his coat tighter against the bracing afternoon winds and inhaled deeply. The rush was exhilarating. He stood there for a few minutes deciding what he wanted to do. A walk would be nice, but he could walk anywhere. A rumbling growl gurgled in the pit of his stomach and couldn't have occurred at a better time, reminding him that he had just left the house without a morsel to eat. He only had to think on it for a few short seconds, considering it was never really a question in the first place; the man could eat. His only concern was where? After overhearing from quite a few people that the small cafe in town was building a reputation, Cassius charted his course (in a manner of speaking) and took off in the general direction of town; not having the slightest clue where this Cafe Diem was. All he knew was that apparently, good food would be waiting for him.

By the time Cass had made it to a half-way marker, he knew that "going with the flow" hadn't been a wise wardrobe choice. His jacket was off, draped over his arm, and the first two buttons of his shirt underneath undone, and yet he still glistened in the blistering sun. A swim was long over due at that point, and he could think of a few places that would do the trick, but first he had to get some grub to stifle the angry noises of his abdomen. At least I know what to do next. He mused. The dirt path he had taken from the house suddenly curved into a distinguishable paved road that would lead him to town. Cass followed it for another ten minutes before the tops of buildings came into view, and he knew then that matters could only get better with the shade they would give off.

Cafe Diem was easier to spot than he had assumed; given the fact that Cass never came to town unless he needed something, much less for his own leisure. Eden was a small town though, so maybe it wasn't as much of a surprise as he'd given it credit for. The chime of a bell sounded as he pushed through the entrance and stepped inside. The atmosphere was significantly better than he had expected; full of friendly chatter and the smell especially was delectable. Cass approached the counter and placed an order promptly, some sort of breakfast special that sounded good enough, and had his money ready while the server stepped away to prepare the food. With the extra time he took a look around him, giving the place a good once over to determine it's appeal, and realized he had failed to notice that Gavin and Eira were on the other end of the cafe just a short distance from him. Feeling slightly silly, Cass left the counter and approached the group with his signature grin. "Looks like I lost the race." He nodded his head to them in greeting followed by his touch of humor.

He stood there with their group for a few minutes, casually looking around every now and then as a new customer would walk in to form a short line-up at the counter. He was in the midst of a deep thought when the chime of the door brought his gaze back in that direction. First it was the form fitting jeans, then it was those full lips and perfect teeth that had him gawking like a pubescent boy. Or maybe it was those boots; he really liked those boots. "Who is that?" He murmured to no one in particular as he caught himself staring at her - at all of her. Far from love at first sight, but there was most definitely an attraction. The only thing that broke his gaze was the persistent announcement of his order, and Cass turned away to pay the lady. However, as he was handing her the cash he leaned in slightly and said very quietly, "See that woman back there? Whatever she wants, use this to pay for it, yeah?" Once it was confirmed Cass took his order and walked away without his change as though nothing had been said. Before leaving the cafe Cass gave a friendly gesture to Gavin and Eira to indicate that he was leaving to eat outside, and did just that.
