𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐬 𝐛𝐢𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐝𝐚𝐲
The moment Diane spoke to him, it felt like he was drowning, in every sense of the world. When she whisked him away he followed, Bentley knew that he would follow Diane to the ends of the earth, but he kept the thought to himself as he parked himself on one of the little benches they had outside. He waited patiently and quietly for her return, Bentley knew that he would also wait for her forever if she asked but she didn’t necessarily need to know that either. Not now, maybe not ever, but a part of him also felt like she already knew.
The thought was brought to a stuttering halt as she sat beside him, she looked even more beautiful outside under the stars, Bentley desperately trying to listen to her as she spoke. His mind was a mess, his leg bouncing incessantly in front of him, hands looking for purchase any where besides the current state of his lap. He wanted to touch, wanted her to know that he missed her, but he wasn’t allowed. It was some what calming to know that Diane was just as nervous and anxiety ridden as he was, watching intently as she bit away at her lip. Bentley wanted nothing more than to grab her chin, keep her from worrying the skin, and kiss away all the unease she was feeling, and yet all he could do was sit there and listen; hands to himself.
It was as if his mind was trying to catch up with Diane’s words, first about Scout, Bentley cursing at himself for being such a s**t father, but even more deeply over what she said in regards to Milo. He was irritated that the p***k would even insinuate that, because that was most certainly not what he said, and yet, he shook his head calmly. “I’m not okay with it, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be.” He flipped over his hand, grateful for her touch, easing away the need for closeness even the slightest bit, lacing their fingers together. It would be the last time he was able to do so, so he took full advantage. ”I just want you to be happy,” he said as he leaned in and kissed her cheek briefly. Bentley unwavering and uncaring as to what end of that Cherise caught, as he got up and passed her on his way back into the house, wishing her a goodnight as he went.
“I’m ready to go home now.”
The following days were a lot to take in, he couldn’t say that he had grown angry, there was nothing to be angry about, he had gotten what he wanted, Diane was happy, but that didn’t stop the cloud that hung heavy over his head. Bentley couldn’t help the insatiable need to be alone, now more so thankful for Aaron’s time at work, but this time he wasn’t on the war path to self destruction. Instead he found himself at parks, rooftops, various locations throughout the city, searching for new places to self reflect. It was this weird limbo of independency and reliance, something that Bentley was having a hard time finding a balance between and firm grasp of the two.
𝗷𝘂𝗹𝘆 𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗵, 𝟮𝟬𝟭𝟳
“Ready to go?” Aaron asked him as he grabbed Eleanor’s car keys from the counter, when he had actually gotten his license? Bentley was unsure. She had allowed Aaron to borrow her car since today was the day they’d be moving all of his stuff into Aaron’s apartment, it was also the day that he would be officially moving out of the house. Bentley nodded his head, quickly agreeing before walking out the door first, before heading down to the parking garage down below.
That’s how they ended up the house, Bentley was in a decent mood, hopeful and positive, a better mood than the night before, but he hadn’t made it upstairs yet. His first test waiting for him at the entrance as he witnessed Milo attempting to kiss Diane. Bentley couldn’t help but freeze, thinking maybe that this was punishment for stealing a kiss from her during their final moment of closure, he never looked back to see how Diane felt about it, he didn’t want to know, and maybe this was the universes way of telling him, so he walked past, allowing Aaron to make small talk on his behalf.
The house was fairly quiet, a good change of pace and a good sign, as he packed up his things into the boxes that Aaron had provided for him. It almost felt like it’d be excessive if anyone else was there to help him clean out his things, trying to willingly let go and make peace with his past. But it was hard concept, especially for someone who so desperately clung onto anything with permanence. Bentley had said his metaphorical last goodbye to Diane just under a week ago, and now he was saying his actual goodbye to his childhood home, or at least the only that ever counted.
Bentley didn’t really know what to expect when he cleaned out his room, unsure of what remained after the little amounts of time he had spent in there over the course of the previous year. Before he moved out, he was never home, and before then he kept a very minimal amount of things, mostly on his walls as mementos he wouldn’t want to be forgotten too soon. Instead, the things that haunted him were the memories that him and Diane shared, littered in every inch and crevice of the room. The nights they shared together in there, laughing and loving one another until their hearts content, but that’s all it was anymore, a memory, and Bentley had to begin to let go of them. He could only promise himself that he would make new ones, better ones, ones that he could say that he was proud of as he packed his minimal amount of things left over into the little brown boxes that stood loudly in the room.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx] Drew Noah Bassett

Being in college was hard, being in college during finals was harder, being in college when your roommate was going through a break up was the absolute worst. In between studying and trying to cram for his up and coming tests, Drew also had to worry about a different girl roaming around the apartment every couple of nights this past month. If this had been any other time of the year, he probably wouldn't have minded it as much. They were in college, this was the time to mess about and meet new people, but it was really hard to study when he heard the constant pounding of the wall on the other side of the tiny living space all throughout the night. Not to mention, the context behind it all, his best friend had just broken it off with his girlfriend not too long before, Drew was sure he was trying to work things out, probably not in the healthiest of ways, but it was what it was at this point.
It was one of those nights, one right before a big final bright and early the next morning, his hair disheveled from all the pulling he was doing at it as he starred down at his book. Drew was fairly decent when he came to school, an average B student, C's where it it hardly mattered, A's when it really did. This class on the other hand was one that really did, this was his second time taking the same math class from the previous semester and if he had to take it again, surely his parents would kill him.
A sigh escaped his lips as he wrote down the problem from his study guide over and over again, trying to make sense of it for what felt like the millionth time that night. It was getting a little easier, but he was sure he'd be up all night making sure there were no hiccups in the morning, Drew needed all the time he could get. So when the pounding began throughout the small living space he couldn't help but roll his eyes in irritation, his roommate had come home with a girl that night as well, but promised they would be quiet; this was the exact opposite of quiet.
There was only so much he could take, he decided he wasn't going to be that roommate for the sole fact that he had been friends with his roommate since middle school. He would leave it until tomorrow, but right now, he needed to find a quiet place to study across campus, even if that mean't on a bench some where outside, surely the campus was safe enough.
But as he walked out of his room he came to the quick realization the noise was coming from the front door instead. His brow quirked up in curiosity, it was late, there shouldn't be anyone up, but this person seemed persistent. "Oh? Uh, Em," he said awkwardly the moment he caught sight of her face and the distraught look come across. "What are you doing here?" the way he closed the door the slightest bit, blocking her view any further inside. If Drew was being honest, what ever was about to happen here was none of his business, really, he should step aside and let her wreak havoc, "Um, maybe that's not a good idea." but he just couldn't do that to one of his friend because of the bro code or what ever.

𝗷𝘂𝗹𝘆 𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗵, 𝟮𝟬𝟭𝟳
The room grew louder and louder, posters torn down from the wall, minimal photos and keepsakes tucked safely away in boxes, later to be shoved out of the room one by one to make a tidy little crowd in the hall way. There was hardly anything left, the white walls echoing his movements now as he packed away the last few thing, the soft voice of Diane’s singing nearly startling him in the quietness. As her voice filled the room, he couldn’t help but stop and listen, something he would surely miss. It had been months since the last time he had heard her sing, before everything changed, and after today it’d probably be his last, just like everything else. It took him few moments, her voice permanently etched into his memory, before he was able to move again, trying desperately not to dwell to heavy on the lyrics.
Now sat heavy in his hands was one of the few photos that were left on his wall, something left untouched by Cherise. Why she had left such keepsakes up, was beyond him, maybe she expected him to come back and grab these things on his own, maybe she was leaving it up to Diane. Either way, he remembered taking this exact photo, Diane had woken up beside him after one of the many nights shared in his room. It was like any other morning, Diane up before him, Bentley always sleeping in unless given a reason not too. He remembered looking up at her, feeling like the luckiest person in the world, showering her in compliments before complaining and questioning how someone could look so perfect after a full night sleep. It was a perfect morning, the way she crawled back into his arms right after allowing herself to sleep in for just a little bit longer with him. It was the last good morning they had had.
It felt like he was doing something wrong, holding onto lost time, when Diane had walked into the room, ultimately scaring him and looking over his shoulder as she stood in the door way. ”Okay, thanks,” was all he managed to get out, as he placed the photo on his bed, his old bed, before grabbing his final box and following her out of the room. A part of him wanted to say goodbye to it, not like this, but maybe he was better off not doing it after all.
Nothing had changed, not that Bentley had spent a lot of time up here anyway, he had better places in the house to hide, aside from the new addition of Scouts stuff to the piles and piles of messes. When Diane walked up to them he stood a few feet away, watching as she lifted things up and out of the boxes. His heart sank with each and everything she pulled out, digging the feeling of guilt deeper over all the time he had missed in his child life.
The old Bentley would have ran away, asking where the rest of his things were so he could move on, this Bentley found himself moving closer, now standing shoulder to shoulder with Diane as his he ran his fingertips over the crayon marks at the side of the box itself. A smile tugged its way at his lips, as he let Diane continue talking, he could listen to her talk for hours, but no longer had that.
”I am,” he said slowly. His entire life he had been so confident with the way he spoke, saying everything will full conviction, not caring about what would come after. Honestly, nine out of ten times it was what got him in trouble, mouthing off to the wrong person, go against ever law set out to keep in line, probably would have saved him a few black eyes, but now was different. This time he spoke slowly, unsure of what he was about say next as he searched for the right words. ”Diane, I know I haven’t been that great of a father to Scout, but I’ve been thinking a lot about what you said, about being in Scout’s life,” repeating the words and validation presented to him in the two short times he had been around both Diane and Scout together. ”And reading the book to her. I—,” it’s when the rambling began.
”I don’t know how to ask, but I’d really like to spend time with Scout.” The moment the words left his mouth there was no going back, fingers coming to stop as he looked over at Diane to gauge her reaction. "Outside, I mean, at Aaron's apartment. He'd be around to help so there'd be less to worry about.” The days leading up today, since being at Scout's birthday, he had been going back and fourth on the idea, and how active he wanted to be with their daughter. What it'd look like if he fully committed and how it would effect Scout in the long run. "We could start with overnights, I could bring her back in the morning. I just think it'd be nice to spend one on one time with her," Bentley looked down at the box beside them, "without you as a constant reminder." A part of him was still on the fence when he had walked inside the house, unsure he would even ask all, but as the silence settled into the room thick, he was made aware of how badly he wanted her to say yes and how terribly it'd crush him if she had said no.

A wonder how such an empty and quiet room could feel so loud, in such a hollow state. There was hardly anything left, the walls now free of any posters or photos, keepsakes left over from the last couple of years, before Bentley really stopped caring. In a sense, it was freeing, feeling like he could finally close this chapter of his life and start a new one, but deep down he understood what this mean’t, a goodbye waiting for him outside, at the bottom of the staircase, on the porch of the house. A simple reminder when Diane’s voice drifted into his room as if it was searching for him, her soft words spoken to their daughter in between. This is what growing up felt like, Bentley was almost sure of it.
It felt like he was doing something wrong, holding onto lost time, not realizing he had stopped everything, when Diane had walked into the room. ”Oh, okay. Thanks,” was all he managed to get out. Taking a second to take one last look around the room, his eyes wandering into all the open spaces and the memories that followed. Bentley took a deep breathe, as if it would help to trap them all in the time capsule of his brain, before grabbing his final box off the floor and catching up to Diane down the hall.
Not much had changed, not that he had spent much time here as it was, Bentley had better places in the house to hide, the attic never being one of them. The old Bentley would have ran away, finding one of those few places of comfort, the moment Diane started pulling things from Scout’s boxes, asking where his things were so he could move on. This Bentley found himself closing the distance between the two of them, now standing shoulder to shoulder with her, as his fingertips grazed over the crayon marks on the side of the box. A smile tugged at the corners of his mouth as he let Diane quietly talk beside him about their daughter, all the things he had missed, all the things he looked forward to making up for in the future.
”I am,” he said slowly, unsure if they were on the same page. Diane and Bentley had a way of reading each other, it had been that way their whole lives. Bentley liked to believe it was because they were soulmates, but the older he got he realized that spending every waking moment with a person would do that to you regardless. ”Diane,” he said, stopping to look at her. ”I’ve been thinking a lot about what you said, being here, present in Scout’s life,” his hand finding purchase on the side of the box, looking for some sort of comfort.
If you listened to the way a person spoke, long enough, you'd realize that everyone has a way of speaking, Diane’s being one of leadership, Bentley’s being one of sheer confidence. His words came with full conviction, believing heavily in the idea that being blunt was the best way to go about things. On any given day, it got him in trouble, the cause for most of his black eyes and bruised lips, but Bentley could at least walk away from that with hardly any regrets. It was aways the way he had gone about things, now was different, Bentley had never been so nervous about asking something his life.
”I’d really like to spend some time with Scout. On my own time, I mean,” the words coming out slowly again. ”Without you there as a constant reminder.” The thought fleeting as he continued, ”We could start with overnights at Aaron’s apartment, he’d be around so they would be less to worry about, you know, just in case.” Bentley had put a lot of thought into this and the days leading up today, asking himself how active he wanted to be in Scout’s life and what that’d look like. A part of him was still on the fence when he had walked inside the house, unsure he would even ask all, but as the silence settled into the room thick, he was made aware of how badly he wanted her to say yes and what it would feel like if she’d say no.
