An alien attack has unleashed a virus that kills any male that it comes into contact with and a little over half of all the men on the planet are dead. Three years later an all female team using special mechs gets a sample of the virus from the alien mother ship. The pilots have been showing symptoms similar to insanity the more they use the mechs, but the mission is a success. In route to the international lunar base the virus sample disappears, five of the pilots are either dead or missing, two of the mechs are destroyed and all the escape pods are launched. The group has been called back to the base while secretly being branded traitors.
The year is 2060 and mankind has made a fair amount of progress in the fifty years between then and now. The most impressive being what was called the Solar Gate a fantastic new blend of technology that would allow for deep space travel while being powered with panels that could harness 93% of the energy absorbed from the sun. Upon the first tests of this technology, placed halfway between Earth and Venus, everything seemed fine. Weeks passed and things were looking quite peaceful until ships that were going through the portal mysteriously weren’t coming back. Before the scientists had a chance to investigate, spacecraft never before seen came through the portal and contact with the Solar Gate was lost.
Two days later was the initial invasion by the aliens whom had been nicknamed “Bugs” due to the shape of one of the larger spacecraft. The military forces of several nations around the world repelled the invasion and a series of missiles were launched into space as a counterstrike with the intent of destroying the Bugs, or at least destroying the gate. This plan was moderately successful in damaging the alien fleet, but it was the alien response that proved to be one of the most devastating disasters to mankind.
Seven canisters, the size of houses, impacted the geometrical center of Earth’s seven continents and a virus spread from the impact sites. This virus affected only a particular type of animal, ones that contained a Y chromosome. The disease is an airborne pathogen with the intent of preventing live on earth from reproducing.
Three years from the initial biochemical attack, a crack team of fifteen female pilots have been trained in a new type of weapon in order to fight the alien invasion and find the cure by infiltrating the alien's mother ship. This new weapon is the development of the mecha, the Macross: a transformational type of ship with the ability to shift from a jet shaped spaceship to a humanoid fighting machine. The pilots are all highly skilled, but many of them have reported strange symptoms the more they use the machines, such as vicious nightmares, insomnia, paranoia, and delusions. Regardless, the mission is a success, and a sample of the virus is obtained. In their leaving, the team also detonates charges and destroys the Solar Gate, ensuring that no more alien life forms could arrive.
However, while being brought back aboard the Liberty, the mega-ship that the fifteen pilots used to transport their mechs and themselves, the sample disappears. Immediately there are accusations of a traitor in the midst of the pilots and this is helped along by the fact that all emergency pods have been jettisoned, two mechs are destroyed, two of the pilots are missing and three have been found dead.
News of this has reached Earth and now the pilots have been secretly branded traitors and have also been ordered to return to the Lunar Observational Verification Entity, a base on the moon where the group originally trained for their mission.
The airborne pathogen attacks one thing and one thing only. The Y chromosome in all animals on Earth. Once infected, the male in question has very little time to live, mere minutes before the cellular breakdown literally tears one apart from the inside. Due to the Earth’s natural wind patterns and the lack of preparedness, the virus wiped out over a quarter of the world’s population in the first year and a half alone. By the time of the mecha assault, masks sufficient enough to protect against the virus have been mass produced and distributed.
The world is a much different place. The governments of most countries have made dramatic shifts, now with women holding many of the offices that their male counterparts once held. Families were ripped apart as husbands, brothers, fathers and sons all died painful deaths, while the women who knew them could only watch in horror. Memorials all over the world have risen to honor the fallen dead. However, extremist groups have also risen up, some claiming that the disease is the start of a better world, and that it will be the beginning of a new world order. Although there are several fringe groups, the one with the most voice and the most violence is the Valkyrie. They are a group who claim that the virus was a destiny to wipe out the patriarchal society that has oppressed women for centuries.
Beyond the ability to shift from the jet mode to the battle mode, the mechs hold a special feature that allows for them to be a superior weapon against the aliens. This is the direct interface technology that allows the machines to be directly hooked up to the pilots brain. The machine reacts as smoothly as if the machine were a part of their own body. The dreams started at various times for the women pilots, but the level of severity of the other symptoms varied from pilot to pilot.
A total of 18 mechs were created. Three prototypes and the fifteen that were piloted by the all woman group. In the battle and escape from the mother ship, three mechs were destroyed, 6 were heavily damaged 3 made it out with minor damage, and three escaped untouched.
The two mechs destroyed shortly after the disappearance of the virus sample were one with minimal damage and one with heavy damage. Both of them belonged to members of the team that were found dead. Although both women were found on the other end of the ship, looks of pain twisted on their faces, but not a single injury that could be found on their bodies by an initial inspection.
This is a military protected and scientifically equipped base. Personnel from all over the world were brought to this base in order to aid in preventing the next attack by the Bugs. It was the job of those there to train the women for their mission and use the virus sample to create a new vaccine that would protect those on earth.
Among those in charge of training the women were a small group of scientists and soldiers that believe that it's false to brand the mech group as traitors. These were, for the most part, people that had close contact with the woman before their mission.
The base itself exists as a series of see through domes connected to one another like bubbles that touch each other in a bath tube. The base is rather large, able to house several thousands of people and has sections for everything that one might find at a military base on Earth: Labs, offices, training grounds, gyms, recreational areas, hangers, places to eat, etc.
This is the ship where the pilots and the light crew begin at. The Liberty is a cargo ship large enough to house the 15 mechs used for the assault and retrieval of the virus sample. Other than the cargo bay, it is a relatively small ship. Designed to get the team there and get the hell out when things were finished, it's designers gave it few provisions: a medical bay, five sleeping quarters, a kitchen, a small recreational room, and a lot of hallways that positioned these areas around the cargo hold.
What the ship lacks in leisure, it makes up for in speed and durability. Outfitted with the latest large scale rockets, it can reach Venus from Earth in three days while traveling in a strait line and it is triple plated along the hull for protection. However, this is not the best ship to be maneuvering in, due to the fact that it is, essentially, a large fast moving safe. The ship also has no gravity inducing systems of any kind. Thus, you and everything else floats.
