An advanced literate roleplay is a beautiful thing.

It is a story of depth and beauty imagined collaboratively
by the souls of the characters taking part in it.

Some roleplayers are players taking part in a game... others are artists weaving beautiful and complex tapestries; immersive worlds with breadth and life, multifaceted characters with human strengths and weaknesses, and daring stories that draw the reader in with luscious sensual detail and emotional resonance. These are advanced literate roleplayers.

There are those who believe that “advanced literate” is merely a measure of how many words, sentences or paragraphs one puts into a post, but advlit roleplayers know better. Advlit is not a measure of quantity, it is a style that roleplays have – a way the roleplay is created and played out. There are also those who believe that it is a declaration of superiority; that people calling themselves or their roleplays “advanced literate” are saying they are better than the average. But advlit is not a measure of quality either, it is a way to roleplay, not a “level”.

Advlit roleplays are roleplays that celebrate detail and sensual experience. It is a style of roleplaying where the players take the time to describe, not just the stuff that happens, but also the world and the emotional and psychological states of their characters so that their fellow players can feel them, deeply and intimately. It is not about writing a ton or words, and it is not about being “better”, it is about creating stories, worlds and characters that the other players can lose themselves in. It’s not for everybody, but some people like it, and this directory is for them.

This directory was created to cater to the needs of those people, to help them find partners both for one-on-one play, and for group scenarios. It is intended to be the nexus of a network of advlit players and roleplays. Whether you seek a partner for a one-on-one game, or you are a player seeking a group roleplay, or you are a group roleplay creator seeking players, or you are simply looking for people to chat with, so long as your tastes run advlit, this directory and the associated thread will help.

Leave an ad requesting an advlit partner, or seeking players for your advlit roleplay; search the ads for an advlit partner or roleplay to suit your needs; or just hang around in the thread and chat. Whatever your desires, if you are an advlit roleplayer, there is something here to satisfy them.

This is where any important announcements will appear.
You should check this occasionally to see what's up with the directory.

            【 First weeks of March 2012 】

The directory is currently undergoing major renovations in preparations for its two-year anniversary. The directory is being restructured, new rules are being added, and all ads - roleplay and roleplayer - re being updated to include date stamps so people can see how recent they are.

The net result will not be any real change for advertisers... unless they want to take advantage of the new features to increase their chances of getting notice. However, users of the directory will find the directory much easier to use, whether they are looking for a roleplayer, or a roleplay.

Please bear with me in the meantime.

They are ready and begin training soldiers; using chemical injections, shock treatments, and psychical therapy to make their perfect army. They will be clean, resolute, and impossible to beat. These people have nothing to lose after becoming the pariahs of society: the criminally insane. Each has their crime but in this hospital the staff seems more sinister than their patients. After seeing the effects that the injections have had on their patients, enhanced senses and psychical prowess being just simple examples, they too begin to subdue themselves to similar treatments. This is how the United States changed the face of the world’s wars.

There are no habitable planets. There are no intelligent species beyond humanity, and any other signs of life beyond that are minimal at best. The universe is, it seems, largely uninhabitable, and largely uninhabited, but for a small series of surviving human colonies, connected, but only just barely. They drift around space untethered to planet, or even solar system, in constant search, it is said, of harvestable resources, and harvestable knowledge, with the sole intent of ensuring the survival of the human race. That is, at least, what the bulk of the population has been led to believe.

            Genres: Sci-fi, survival, adventure.

Accepting: Slot based, with no other restrictions so far.

hat is literate (in terms of roleplaying)?

"Literacy" is a measure of how well-written your posts are supposed to be.

In an "unliterate" (yes, I know that is not a real word) roleplay, the only requirement is that the action you are taking is clear for others to understand. These kinds of roleplays are generally fast, but not particularly immersive. Sometimes in "unliterate" roleplays, it is not even required to write in proper English, or in complete sentences so long as everyone else understands what you are writing. Typically actions are denoted by *asterisks*, or -hyphens- or ~tildes~, and anything not in between these delimiters is speech (for example: "~raises my arms~ Look at me! I am roleplaying now!").

"Semi-literate" (or "semi-lit") means that you are not expected to go into great detail, but are expected to write in proper English. Generally speaking, you are required to write your posts in proper prose, and not simply delimit your actions with asterisks and such (for example, "I raise my arms, and shout out, 'Look at me! I am roleplaying now!'"). Semi-lit roleplays are the most common type of roleplay on Gaia.

"Literate" roleplays require not only proper English, but a certain amount of detail in the characters, and in the descriptions of their actions. A literate roleplayer will not just describe what their character is doing, they will describe why their character is doing it - for example, by writing out the character's inner monologue. Literate roleplays are the halfway mark between roleplaying and writing a story; in a very real way, each player in a literate roleplay is collaborating on writing a novel with the other players. (An example of what a literate roleplayer might write is: "'I have done it,' I think to myself, 'I have accomplished what I set out to do.' I raise my arms in a victory-V gesture, and turn my face to the sky. 'Look at me!' I shout to the world, 'I am roleplaying now!'".

Basically: "semi-lit" means that you are simply expected to write in proper English, whereas "literate" means that you are expected to write descriptively in proper English.

            User Image
            hat is "advanced" literate?

A literate roleplayer is not only expected to write using proper English grammar and spelling, they are also expected to write well - writing descriptively about what their character is doing, thinking or wearing - so that other players aren't just able to read what you are writing, but are also able to immerse themselves in the world of your character. In fact, when a bunch of literate roleplayers play, they are all collaborating on building and sharing a single imaginary world that everyone playing can immerse themselves in. An advanced literate (or "advlit") roleplayer can not only take part in the crafting of the shared world, they are skilled at crating complex and complete worlds that allow an even richer immersive experience.

An advlit roleplayer is a skilled writer, capable of descriptively sketching out a scene that their character is in, and the actions their character takes in that scene. Just as a matter of style, an advlit roleplayer's posts are often a pleasure to read, because of the advlit roleplayer's skill at writing prose.

But an advlit roleplayer is not just a good writer, they are also a good roleplayer, which means they are not only able to craft beautifully written posts, they are also able to - at the same time - play the game well. An advlit roleplayer understands how to use their own post and their character's actions to set up other players, giving them a springboard from which to write their own beautiful posts, and so on. Advlit roleplayers are also skilled at crafting characters that are complex, multifaceted, and interesting, with intriguing yet believable personalities, and they can play those characters in various situations while staying "in character" (that is, not changing the character's personality to suit the situation).

Basically: "advlit" means you are expected to be a competent writer - capable of beautiful prose - and, at the same, a competent roleplayer - able to adapt to the shifting tides of the game while always making sure to give the other players plenty to work with as well.

            User Image
sn't the difference between "semi-lit", "literate" and "advlit" just the length of the posts?

No! This is a common myth spread by people who don't understand what roleplaying literacy is about. Simply writing more won't turn a literate player into an advlit one. Lots of bad writing does not equal good writing. More literate roleplays demand more depth, not more quantity (and skilled roleplayers, of course). The thing is, depth requires quantity, to a certain degree. You can't write a magnificent post that is just a sentence long. But simply writing more sentences does not give you a magnificent post either.

Basically: more literate roleplays are not ‘better’ because the posts are longer, the posts are longer because they are ‘better’ (where ‘better’ means more immersive and deep).

            User Image
ow do I tell if a roleplay is advlit?

Unfortunately, you can't. Not easily, anyway. Not every advlit roleplay says it is advlit. And not every roleplay that says it is advlit really is (this is a growing problem). Before the roleplay has started it is especially difficult, because no matter how nice it looks, once posting starts it may not be that great at all.

You can try doing a background check on the roleplay creator: search the forums to see what other roleplays she has created, or what other roleplays she is in, and try to judge her skill and style from that.

You could also look at the rules to see if there are minimum post size requirements. These tend to scare away everyone but more literate roleplayers, so if the roleplay requires a minimum post size of 600 words or 5 paragraphs, it's a pretty safe bet you are going to end up with only really good roleplayers. (Of course, sometimes you get roleplays that require a 600 word minimum in the rules, but everyone just ignores the rule - including the roleplay creator. If that happens, just leave the roleplay.)

Word count is not a great metric, but it is the easiest (which is why everyone uses it). If you are not getting an average of 1000 words per post in a roleplay, it is probably not an advlit roleplay.

Basically: read the rules and look for minimum post size requirements, and do a background check on the roleplay creator and other players.

            User Image
hy do some roleplays claim to be advlit if they are not? Doesn't that scare people away?

Yes, it does, but the thing is: it scares away everyone except advlit roleplayers... who are usually the most talented roleplayers. In other words, you can pretty sure that whoever joins is probably a good roleplayer.

"Advlit" is like a stamp of quality: if you put it on your roleplay or your roleplay request, it just looks better... even if it's not... and it usually attracts much better roleplayers. Because there's no "advlit police" to tell you to take the "advlit" off your roleplay if it's not immersive enough, anyone can use it. And once an advlit player has taken the time to design a character and get involved, they are usually loathe to quit. It's called a "bait and switch".

Some people also think that "advlit" literally means quality; it does not. "Advlit" promises depth and immersivity, not quality. You can have a very high quality roleplay that is not advlit, and you have have a very poor quality roleplay that is.

If a roleplay or roleplayer claims to be advlit to get you to join, then you have the right to demand that it should actually be advlit - especially if you put the time and effort into designing a good character. If the roleplay or roleplayer can't handle being advlit, then just walk away.

Basically: "advlit" means that the roleplay or roleplayer should be really good, and everyone wants to make that claim, even though most people shouldn't.

            User Image
ow do I know if I'm advlit?

              Ask yourself:
              • Can you write proper English? With correct grammar and spelling? (You don't need to be perfect, but you should be good.)
              • Can you create good characters? Do you know what Mary Sues are and how to avoid them? Are you aware of the overused character stereotypes that are often used? Can you justify a character's personality without relying on cheap crutches like random trauma in their history?
              • Can you roleplay well? Do you understand the three phases of a roleplay post (replying to the actions of the other characters, taking your own actions to further the plot, and setting up the next players with something to work with)? Are you able to flexibly handle shifting situations and time flows without getting stuck all the time?

If you don't know the answers to these questions for sure: practice! Try to roleplay like an advlit player (creating rich, deep characters, writing beautifully immersive posts, and playing the game well without getting stuck or leaving other players stuck all the time), and see if you can do it.

Basically: test your skills against other good roleplayers and get feedback from them.

            User Image
-am a semi-lit or literate roleplayer, but I would like to be advlit; how do I do it?

Practice, practice, practice. Ask advice from advlit roleplayers, and take their criticism - learn from them.

If you can join an advlit roleplay, try to meet the standards of the other players (beware: not every roleplay that says it is advlit really is).

Sometimes you can't join an advlit roleplay, because they are rare, or because they require background checks that you cannot yet pass. What you should do then is join semi-lit or literate roleplays... but play like an advlit player. You may stun everyone else in that roleplay, but they might like it. Doing this gives you practice, and lets you pad out your background so that eventually you will be able to pass an advlit background check.

Many advlit players will also do one-on-one roleplays with you, and help you improve as you play.

              Practice, practice, practice!

Basically: just be "advlit", even if you are not in advlit roleplays yet, until you build up a portfolio and a set of skills.

            eneral rules

These rules apply everywhere associated with the Advanced Literate Roleplaying Directory.

              • Gaia rules and terms of service always take precedence.

              • What Intragalactic says, goes. Always. No exceptions. No questions. If you are asked by Intragalactic to do something, do it. If you are asked not to do something, don't do it.

              • If you are blacklisted, do not attempt to post in the thread or submit any ads. Do not attempt to circumvent your blacklisting by creating alternate accounts. Do not ask someone else to make a post or place an ad for you, or they will be blacklisted as well.

            User Image
            hread rules

These rules apply if you are posting in the thread.

              • Civility and politeness at all time. You don't have to like everyone, but you must not be rude or insulting. You are allowed to express opinions and offer relevant criticism about roleplaying-related topics, but do so politely and without getting personal. If your roleplaying or your roleplay has been criticized, do not take it personally.

              • No ads or any other kind of spam. If you are not sure of whether what you are posting may be considered spam, ask Intragalactic first. Ads for anything are, of course, allowed in your signature.

              • You may request roleplays in the thread - but do not spam (do not post ads and do not post your request more than once). You may not make requests that are not allowed by Gaia - for example, you may not request roleplays that are above PG-13 on or off Gaia, or any kind or roleplay Gaia prohibits (such as slave roleplays).

              • No roleplaying in the thread.

              • When someone breaks the rules - for example, by posting something unacceptable or when a blacklisted person posts - do not quote the post or respond to it in any way. Take a screenshot, and let Intragalactic know.

            oleplayer listing rules

These rules apply if you are making or maintaining an ad to be listed in the one-on-one roleplay request directory.
An ad is usually just a regular one-on-one request thread - usually in Barton OOC.
A listing is just a link to that ad.

              • Your ad must be a publicly viewable thread or journal entry, that you own, within Gaia. It must follow all the rules for the guild, forum or whatever it is posted in.

              • Your ad must be for an advanced literate roleplay of some kind (although you can request other things as well).

              • Your ad must not request a roleplay that is above PG-13 at all, on or off Gaia, or any kind of roleplay that Gaia prohibits (such as slave roleplays). You are responsible for your ad and you are responsible for knowing what is allowed on Gaia.

              • Your ad should be for yourself only. If you make an ad for someone else, you accept full responsibility for them and everything they do. If they break the rules, it will be you that gets blacklisted. If you make an ad for a blacklisted person, you will be automatically blacklisted.

              • User Image You must have PMs enabled. There is no way I can manage the logistics of keeping the directory up to day if I can't contact advertisers. If your PMs aren't enabled when I try to contact you for something, your ad will be removed immediately.

To get your one-on-one advanced literate roleplay request ad listed in the directory, just send me a PM with a link to your ad. You are responsible for your ad.
