INFO

No one will ever read my story.
It's so hard to get good feedback.
I can never find anything decent to read.
I critique people's stuff, but I never get anything in return.

Tired of useless feedback and never getting your writing read? Willing to give feedback to get it? Hopefully you've come to the right place. WRITER SWAP is a beta reader thread for writers which works on the principle of mutual feedback. You must give to receive. It is hoped that this thread will allow people to help themselves and help others with their writing 3nodding

So, are you ready? Then please, peruse our list of available swappers and maybe even offer yourself up for the challenge.
RULES OF THE THREAD
  • If you are interested in having your work read, and are willing to read someone else's in return, please post in this thread with the following info (Full form can be found in the post below);
    - The title and genre of your work. Prose, poetry, fanfiction and essays all welcome.
    - A short description and approximate word length
    - The current status of your work (Finished, unfinished, rough draft, revising, etc...). You may also specify areas you are looking for particular feedback on.
    - Any additional notes (EG; Do you have a thread for your work, or do you want your feedback over PM's?)

  • Do not post your actual story in this thread. You will not get feedback on it.

  • There is no minimum or maximum word limit for submissions. There is a cap of 4 submissions per person, so try to pick the ones you're most looking for feedback on.

  • If you are interested in beta swapping with someone, please PM them and include
    - The name of the piece you want to read,
    - The information on the work you would like them to read in return.
All swappers have the right to refuse expressions of interest. Please do not take this too personally. Beta-ing has a tendency to fall apart when forced, so it's better if both parties are interested.

RULES OF THE SWAP
  • Once you have acquired a fellow swapper, you will have 15 days in which to read and respond to their work. For particularly long works, please negotiate with your swapper as to how much you can, or are willing to, read.

  • If for any reason you foresee not being able to respond in that time, please give your swapper prior notice or politely request an extension. Swappers: if you receive no response within 15 days, please PM me. Swappers who refuse to comply with the rules and give no reason as to why will be put on a greylist. Repeat offenders will be blacklisted.

  • For every 200 words of story you read, you should write 10 words in response. That is to say, if you read 20,000 words of story, you should write at least 1000 words of feedback (Not 'OMG, I need to write a ten word comment every paragraph!?'). Of course, feel free to write more 3nodding . Feedback does not just have to be critique; it can also be your personal response to characters and plot, or questions on the future direction of the work.

  • The above is the standard minimum requirement, but the expected level of feedback may vary (see any story-specific additional notes)

  • Similarly, swappers who fail to give enough feedback can be greylisted. Repeat offenders will be blacklisted. This should not be a one-sided swap where you freeload off someone and give very little feedback yourself. If you truly have nothing much to say, at least explain why. Swappers may report you if you meet both of the following:
    - You have gone under the minimum feedback requirement
    - They are personally dissatisfied with the level of that feedback

  • [OPTIONAL] In addition to giving feedback on their work, I would also like you to recommend something inspiring or creative to your swapper. This could be an author or book you personally enjoy, a song or band, a movie, an artwork or artist, a writing exercise, and soforth. Swappers do not have to act on these suggestions. They are more there as food for thought and creativity 3nodding

Listed in alphabetical order by Gaian name and title of work
If you would like to make any amendments to your submission text, please PM me or post in the thread

NON-FICTION

Gaian name: Akabaneking (PM)
Title of work: Mankind's Potential for Godliness

Genre: Philosophical ranting/opinions
Approximate submitted length: 1500 words
Brief description: If Humans can achieve true perfection, than they will become One with God/deity/infinite power source
Current status of work: Gramatically decent, no punct. errs, drafting finished.
Please pick apart my...: Introduction, which is horrible...

FICTION

Gaian Name: Ace of Shadows. (PM)
Title of Work: Missing Pieces. Although it's subject to change.

Approximate submitted length: 2,200 words, I think. Maybe more.
Brief description: Eris, the main character, has to adjust to a good friend missing and with said friend's replacement. The replacement is actually a cousin of the friend, and looks and acts a lot like her. Basically, Eris has to learn to work with this woman without creating strife in the workplace.
Current status of work: It's a stand alone story, right now. I've kind of started in the middle of something, since I wasn't really sure where to start. As it is, I can't seem to end it coherently.
Please pick apart my: Plot development, setting, characters, the ending conversation. I especially want some advice on the ending conversation, since I don't really know where I'm going with it now.

Gaian name: Babbel_fish (PM)
Title of work: The Devil’s Advocate- Night 1: In the End of the Beginning

Genre: Drama/Horror
Approximate submitted length: 9000 (I’m only showing the first part, out of five)
Brief description: Yet anther vampire story(sorry) The story follow the story of a vampire made in the late 60's up to the present. As an mortal she was a drug attic, and lived in an unstable home. She made her money through dealing and had run ins with the law. It are these elements that lead her in a downward spile to her new life. (This part is a brief background on her life and her creation.)
Current status of work: Unfinished
Please pick apart my...: grammar, spelling, awkward phrasing, to much or to little description. Just a general view on it. I want it torn apart, man.
Additional notes: I'm afraid it's to much like Interview with a Vampire by Anne Rice. Although the characters have no similarity besides vampire and interviewer. It’s the interview format that worries me. (this is an old story that’s been redone over and over and the interview format was the only one that work)

Gaian name: Erich Hartmann (PM)
Title of work: Thor's Hammer

Genre: Historical fiction
Approximate submitted length: 6500. However, this is subject to change as I continue to work on it.
Brief description: The synopsis of the story is the wartime life of a German man in WWII. He struggles to fit into a civilian world that does not suit him while juggling his duties as a soldier. His joyless marriage certainly doesn't help things.
Current status of work: Unfinished. I don't necessarily write in chronological order, but this piece I'm submitting for beta is the largest part I've been able to write so far.
Please pick apart my...: Imagery, believability. Anything that should, but for some reason doesn't, keep the reader's attention. If you find anything wrong grammatically, feel free to fix that as well.
Additional notes: If you're not a person who normally reads historical fiction, please consider my piece anyway. I have quite a few people say positive things about this when history was never their favorite subject.

Gaian name: Missy Moodles (PM)
Title of work: The Runaway

Genre: Not sure yet
Approximate submitted length: Uhm... Eh... Over 100 words?
Brief description: The Runaway is about a young orphan who has left the home in which she was placed in. The story follows her journey of trying to find what she feels is most important to her. Freedom. Starting a week after she was 'vanished,' the story follows her through being found, locked away, beaten, raped and other horrible things that one so young should never endure. Will she make it to her goal? Or will reality get the better of her?
Current status of work: Unfinished. (Just started actually.)
Please pick apart my...: Eh. Grammar and Tenses. Ooooh and being OVER descriptive
Additional notes: Uhm. I was a bit tipsy when I typed this out. So please, bear with me. o.O

Gaian name: SeNalove (PM)
Title of work: Cold Coffee

Genre: Adventure/Fantasy
Approximate submitted length: 68,400 words. 15 chapters long
Brief description: Victoria was like any average girl who attended San Fransisco's Private Academy for the Unusually Talented. However, she wasn't ready for what awaited her when a transfer student from the local Demon High suddenly found his way into her life. Now, she gets to dive into the real world of demons and see first-hand what trouble is brewing.
Current status of work: Work in progress
Please pick apart my...: Anything that might sound fatally like a cliche.
Additional notes: This is not a romance novel. Please be aware of that. Also, while I'm well aware that all writers should have a thick skin, mine is still at the lab, so please be gentle (This doesn't mean sugarcoat, just remember I'm still human)

POETRY

Gaian name: Comfy-Pajamas (PM)
Title of work: Vulcan

Genre: poetry
Approximate submitted length: 209 words
Brief description: a little girl trapped in a house fire... saved by a fireman
Current status of work: erm... paper and pen? online? busy?
Please pick apart my...: EVERYTHING i really want critique. I want to get chewed out basically.
Additional notes: I had to do personification with nature for my english class on our poetry portfolio. I chose fire and added a cute ending. I don't want it to be confusing.

FANFIC

Gaian name: JesanaeTekani (PM)
Title of work: Changing Death

Genre: Fanfiction, Drama, Angst, Suspense, Philosophical (is that a genre?)
Approximate submitted length: Over 90,000 words, and currently 15 chapters long . . . but I wouldn't expect you to read it all in one chunk.
Brief description: {Yu Yu Hakusho} Three weeks ago, Kurama went missing, and is now presumed dead; Koenma refuses to share details of him with any of the rest of the Tantei. He hints at a new and vitally important mission, but an unexpected happenstance throws everything completely awry -- and the Tantei slowly begin to discover a network of lies, half-truths, and centuries-old mistakes that threatens to return fom the past and destroy everything they hold dear. What exactly happened to Kurama? From where arose this unknown but deadly threat? And what are the secret fears that Koenma hides behind his innocent veneer? (LOL, I didn't quite realize until now that this is the most pretentious summary I have EVER written. xd )
Current status of work: In progress. Fanatically in progress.
Please pick apart my...: ...plot, characterization, writing style, use of cliche -- basically everything. I'm looking for ways to improve it overall.
Additional notes: Post review in thread, rather than via PM. Despite the first few chapters, this fanfic is NOT all pointless angst. It's gotten a lot better since I started it four years ago. Most of the rest of the notes are in the story thread itself (I like to be thorough). I'm really looking for help on this since few people have read it -- I get the feeling the length is rather daunting. sweatdrop

Gaian name: shards_of_a_flame (PM)
Title of work: The Last Jedi

Genre: Fanfiction
Approximate submitted length: 3500
Brief description: Andrew was a Jedi master but when he woke up one day he had no memories of his past life. Forced into to an early retirement Andrew seeks adventure and takes up smuggle and ticks of the wrong people
Current status of work: has a cople of plot holes and some grammer errors
Please pick apart my...: my whole story
Additional notes: i might have put in to much action and not anought story
THE SWAPPERS
Fantasy, Sci-Fi and other Speculative Fiction
Listed in alphabetical order by Gaian name and title of work
If you would like to make any amendments to your submission text, please PM me or post in the thread

FANTASY

Gaian name: Artikgato (PM)
Title of work: Shadow Slayers (working title)

Genre: Fantasy / Action-Adventure / Romance
Approximate submitted length: 5600 words (prologue) or 35,000 words if the reader wants to go the extra mile and read up to chapter three...
Brief description: Spikora Mori, sorceress extraordinaire, is all but forced to join forces with one of her mortal enemies (or so she claims) in order to get back her favorite sword. However, things aren't always what they seem, and this rescue mission quickly spirals into something a lot more...complicated.
Current status of work: Incomplete, liek whoa.
Please pick apart my...: Rampant use of clichés, wordiness, detailedness, etc. etc.
Additional notes: I only want the reader to read the prologue, but if they want to read the three chapters I've written so far, they can. Also, since I have this tendency to make up words as I go along, each chapter practically has its own glossary. sweatdrop

Gaian name: Blinfaith^_^ (PM)
Title of work: Kiyoshi, The Turning

Genre: Fantasy
Approximate submitted length: 3000 words
Brief description: A short story told in first person about a village healing woman and one of her trials
Current status of work: The work stands on its own, as should any other stories involving her character
Please pick apart my...: Grammar, plot, character development, potential for cliche or over done work

Gaian name: dark_wolfbane (PM)
Title of work: Don't Slay the Messenger

Genre: fantasy/horror
Approximate submitted length: 4,400
Brief description: A group of adventurers travel up a volcano to map the land. However, they are not prepared for what they find living within the fire mountain.
Current status of work: I would like to say finished, however nothing is ever done for me.
Please pick apart my...: Beginning and End.
Additional notes: I also have a thread here, or you can PM me. It doesn't matter.

Gaian name: Dev Kimiko (PM)
Title of work: Lamentations for a Dying Song

Genre: Fantasy. Romance (Urk...)
Approximate submitted length: 2500 - 15,000 (Depending on your bravery). 5 chapters.
Brief description: "There is both terrible tragedy and great hope in times of war". Lamentations is a side story for a personal favorite of mine. Part one of a planned two, it's a bit of a love/war story and primarily character driven.
Current status of work: Unfinished. Recently revised. V1.2
Please pick apart my...: Later chapters. Abuse of described dialogue. Traces of annoying angst or character actions that make you scratch your head/don't feel right.
Additional notes: Please feel free to attack this one chunk at a time~! I know it's a bit... intimidatingly long.

Gaian name: Elaeye (PM)
Title of work: Witherworld - Chapter One

Genre: Fantasy, a little Sci-Fi
Approximate submitted length: 2500-3000 words
Brief description: A girl living in a monotonous society is sent to a virtual world where she crosses the paths of people who make the line between good and bad seem blurred...
Current status of work: Currently writing first draft. Unfinished
Please pick apart my...: Plot + Characters. Primarily characters
Additional notes: Umm...yeah, in the middle of writing it so I probably won't be able to go and nitpick through all the punctuation/spelling stuff just yet. More stuff on the characters and plot will be helpful. The first chapter is quite boring though. Be warned. >3 *watches everyone run away*

Gaian name: Ioreth (PM)
Title of work: Your Crazy Skies

Genre: (light) fantasy
Approximate submitted length: Novel-length, but I would submit the first three chapters (5000 words)
Brief description: Set in an alternate world in an island duchy, backwards in time. Our narrator is hiding from her father, our hero is an invalid who hates most everyone, and our heroine is an insipidly sweet girl who quite literally fell out of the sky. The story follows a girl finding out who she is, and more importantly, who she is not.
Current status of work: nearly finished, light editing.
Please pick apart my...: anything and everything. grammar would be handy. If at any point you are confused, I would appreciate knowing.
Additional notes: I'd love to have a beta reader to read more if they were interested, but I don't want to impose or overwhelm. No pressure. biggrin I had a hard time sticking a genre to this piece so if you're not a fantasy person, don't worry. The fantasy part of it is very, very light. Magic exists in this world, but none of the characters in these early chapters are users. If my description was a little too unclear and you're not sure if you're interested, don't hesitate to pm me.

Gaian name: Kyuseisha (PM)
Title of work: Feathers for the Fallen

Genre: Fantasy/action/mild romance
Approximate submitted length: 14,000 total; and growing
Brief description: Angels, demons and humans. In the afterlife, a young boy sets out to escort a girl back to her hometown, but everything goes wrong, and they are thrown into events more serious than they could have ever imagined.
Current status of work: Unfinished
Please pick apart my...: awkward explanations/whatever
Additional notes: Just ask if you want to see sketches. I'd like to send chapter by chapter if that's okay.

Gaian name: Mythic_Dawn90 (PM)
Title of work: The Faythless

Genre: Fantasy / adventure
Approximate submitted length: 22,000 words
Brief description: A millenia ago the world was plagued by Baal, the Lord of Death who tried to destroy the world. He was defeated when all the races in the land banded together and met him in battle, so peace reigned for centuries.
Now however signs begin to point towards Baal's return to the world and it is up to a young warrior called Kaleb and his team to unravel the truth of what is going on before the world is consumed by war once again.
Current status of work: Unfinished
Please pick apart my...: General storyline, contradictions, sub plots that lead to nothing etc (dont worry about spelling and grammar, and the bad names ive picked that can all be worked on at a later date, unless it really bugs you lol)
Additional notes: Ive been told its a bit like the Abhorsen trilogy and Lord of the Rings and I want to keep away from that so please point out any blindingly obvious breaches of copyright for me.

Gaian name: PAnZuRiEL (PM)
Title of work: Blood of the King

Genre: Fantasy
Approximate submitted length: 6100
Brief description: Oops, almost left this part out. Hmm, what can I say...? I guess it's like a coming-of-age hero-type story with a twist or several. It's heavily inspired by all of my interests, but it's so mashed together it comes out mostly original. May be cliched, but I haven't written that far yet.
Current status of work: Chapter 2 is in progress. The intended length of the work approximates to "longwork is looooooooooong", so I haven't precisely reached any momentous milestones.
Please pick apart my...: Anything you notice, but start with my language and phrasing. There's not much to take apart yet in the realms of plot and characterisation. I use Australian English, and will proceed to spork anyone who points out "spelling errors" and suggests American alternatives.
Additional Notes: Post review in thread, not via PM. I don't care so much about Dev's set word limit for a reply, as long as said reply is meaningful and/or useful.

Gaian name: SadbutSmiling (PM)
Title of work: Alice's Adventures in Wonderland

Genre: Fantasy, Script
Approximate submitted length: 1100 (Scenes 1-5)
Brief description: I picked apart Lewis Carroll's AAW, to make this script and am adding my own bits into the work.
Current status of work: Revise
Please pick apart my...: Everything
Additional notes: Please be nice, I'm still just a beginning

Gaian name: SeNalove (PM)
Title of work: Asphyxiation

Genre: Adventure/Fantasy/ mild Romance
Approximate submitted length: 1900 words
Brief description: Four students. Not exactly model citizens. Gathered together the night before a Final project is due, they find themselves, one by one, turned around into another world called Gella. Here they are given new identities. And it is here they must learn to escape before they all suffocate.
Current status of work: Major work in-progress
Please pick apart my...: Characterization. As it is still so very short, the prologue mainly deals with explaining who everyone as. Characters are extremely important to me, and I probably spend more time on them than is healthy, so I really want to be sure everyone understands them as well as I do.
Additional notes: I tried my absolute best, but I know the summary still sounds annoyingly cliche. As it's still rather short, please don't let that hinder you.

Gaian name: [silver] [agitation] (PM)
Title of work: Arimihat, Chapters 1&2&3 (they're a set)

Genre: Fantasy, slight Romance, Drama.
Approximate submitted length: 7,000
Brief description: It's another world entirely, somewhat akin to our own. It involves a story of creation that may offend any highly Christian folk, thought this is not the intent. It's the introduction and beginning of a grand story of love, death and disappointment, and the instinct to run from your fears, ingrained in every single creature's mind.
Current status of work: These are the first three chapters, the most completed part. If after reading you'd like to see more, please ask.
Please pick apart my...: Symbolism, I'd love to see what you catch. Also, if I've missed any grammar, which I don't think I have, do tell. General thoughts are adored, I've never really had anyone but my Creative Writing teacher look at this before.

Gaian name: Sir Launcelot Du Lake (PM)
Title of work: Caelestis

Genre: Medieval Fantasy
Approximate submitted length: 1,100 words.
Brief description: Introduction of two main characters, meeting before the storm of war.
Current status of work: Rough Draft.
Please pick apart my...: Any and all Constructive criticism, if it is bad feel free to tear it apart.

Gaian name: Shen Pershan (PM)
Title of work: A Trick of The Light

Genre: Science fantasy...?
Approximate submitted length: 2,500 words.
Brief description: (Set in medieval times) Thirty years ago (or so) a form of aliens crashed on Earth from their dying planet, and the humans lost the power to control the light and darkness. No one remembers the event, or the time before it, except for a boy and girl who weren't even born at the time.
Current status of work: Unfinished first chapter.
Please pick apart my...: Description. Or lack of. Strange use of punctuation. General flow to the story (I tend to jump around). Character feasibility.
Additional notes: I did start a scene in the middle of the chapter, but I moved on from it, because it was giving me writers' block. I'll explain to you what happens, because it's a little confusing without it.

Gaian name: tomboygirl16 (PM)
Title of work: Sial

Genre: Adventure/Fantasy
Approximate submitted length: I've only posted a few chapters that consist of about 6300 words... but so far we're nearly at 100000.
Brief description: The story is about a girl who was torn from her own world before she was born to prevent her from taking up her rightful place as the queen of the country of margon, and so be able to unleash a terrible demon upon the country as part of a plot for world domination. Sixteen years later, in our own time, she finds a sword named Sial... which takes her back to her rightful time and place, and she must now put things right and take her rightful place as ruler... lest disaster overcome the world.
Current status of work: unfinished, but almost done.
Please pick apart my...: I specifically want feedback on dialect and my descriptions of clothing and landscapes, but grammar is a good point too, as I have trouble spotting flaws in my grammar.
Additional notes: Will add more chapters as I get feedback. Link to the thread is on my siggy. ^^

SCI-FI & SPECULATIVE FICTION

Gaian name: BlackWolf38 (PM)
Title of work: Drift

Genre: Science Fiction, Drama, Mystery (your usual)
Approximate submitted length: 30,000
Brief description: Set in the year 2287, with humanity hanging onto a thread as they are replaced by "catalog children," perfect beings whose features are chosen by parents.
Current status of work: In progress, just not completely posted
Please pick apart my...: Last few chapters- from "The Offer" onwards.
Additional notes: It's incredibly boring, I know, and I'm sorry for that. You can skip the beginning and jump in at "The Offer"; the beginning offers no real useful information. Oh, and ignore my one-sentence summary; the story is about a lot more than that.

Gaian name: Eccentric Iconoclast (PM)
Title of work: Balance

Genre: Science fiction. Kind of.
Approximate submitted length: Novel length; however, you only get to read up to however long I have it when you bug me about it.
Brief description: An inventor, grieving for his wife who was killed in a car accident invents a time machine to go back and save her. But when he uses it, something goes wrong; his existence gets split by the Balance of Time and a copy of him is sent into both the past and future to keep things from going out of whack dimension-wise. Naturally, this puts an enormous strain on the guy (same consciousness, two time periods) and the stress makes the version in the future go crazy and get himself killed. Now, there's a half-person wandering around in the past and the man's daughter (who had been unborn at the time of the crash) may have to stop him and alleviate his suffering; however, she realises that to kill him may be to clear herself from ever existing...
Current status of work: Not even close to being finished.
Please pick apart my...: Everything. If it exists (or doesn't), I welcome you to pick it apart. Any criticisms you may have are welcomed.

Gaian name: Infested-one (PM)
Title of work: Through the Forest

Genre: Sci/Fi Fiction
Approximate submitted length: 3, 100 words
Brief description: a story of a princess whose mother dies. She runs away and embarks on a dangerous quest to save herself from the evil clutches of Scarletina the Grim
Current status of work: Um...Writers Block xp
Please pick apart my...: anything, just be honest!
Additional notes: In future books in the series: She follows a rumor of her real parents north and faces her draconic ancestral enemies. And Book 3: With her relationship with Phyde going strong, Sapphira meets up with her old bf, Prince Baldwin, and realizes she still has feelings for him.

Gaian name: Sachi_x (PM)
Title of work: October's Shade

Genre: Sci-fi (sort-of), Romance, Crime
Approximate submitted length: Right now, close to 20,000
Brief description: Amelia is a rather quiet teen whose world becomes a tangled mess. Her father is killed. Her family begins to fall to ruin. Amelia, with the help of her father's police officer colleague, swears revenge on the criminal still on the run. But what she finds is mcuh different than she expected, and things take a difficult, strange turn. Set in the year 2016, 4 years after WWIII.
Current status of work: Unfinished, rough draft.
Please pick apart my...: Any plot details you find may be inaccurate or too far-fetched. There's a lot of details that need to come together.
Additional notes: Since this is the rough copy, some things may not make sense, i.e. some details earlier on may not correspond to newer chapters. I'm working on editing it through as I continue to write.

Gaian name: SeNalove (PM)
Title of work: Harlequin

Genre: Sci-Fi/Adventure/Romance
Approximate submitted length: 3500 words. 2 chapters
Brief description: Harlequin, a world destroyed by war and greed. Now, the upper class have trapped themselves inside a bubble, while the rest of the planet is trapped in chaos. Follow the birth of a family, and how is struggles to survive even as the last standing hope of the planet begins to crumble in on itself.
Current status of work: In-Progress
Please pick apart my...: I've never really written anything that could be classified as 'sci-fi', so I'm a bit nervous about how this will read. Also that, I've heard from sci-fi writers that it's difficult to mix in romance with this type of genre, so I want that to go along smoothly as well.
Additional notes:This story contains some subjects which some people might find distasteful, so please have an open mind before reading. Thankyew. ^_^

Oho, Dev rules her threads with an iron fist, doesn't she?

Not that it's a bad thing. No, definitely not. I probably won't be participating in this because I really have nothing worth a beta's time right now, but it seems like a good idea.

Invisible Ghost

Awesome idea, Dev.

Any restrictions on if it's original fiction or fanfiction?
Poast! Yay! It's yummy for my tummy. whee
