Welcome to Matope's 10 Years of Swamp event!
It's impossible to believe that it's been 10 years since Rejam first created an interest thread -- but it's true. Matope has been around for 10 years, and this summer we're celebrating its decceniel anniversary! So come join us for some fabulous kin based on the first few years of this little shop.b

If you're unfamiliar with the shop, click the image above to head over to the main thread and read up about the world of Matope and the Kimeti that inhabit it, as well as the rest of our shop's rules. It is especially important that you read up on the naming conventions for the world, as they are very specific, and if you do not know the rules then you might be excluded or disqualified from certain events

This event ends on August 26th at 10:00pm EST.

The Morrigan values your effort, and will go to someone who shows off their diligence -- by participating in this event, and getting others to do the same!

This will be a free raffle that will last for the entire length of the event -- but you must participate to get tickets!

  • One ticket will be given out for every entry you make to contests or raffles in this event (excluding any paid raffles or dice games). This means that each time you participate in any event in the Ten Years of Swamp event, you will get one ticket toward this doe!
  • An additional ticket will be given out for putting the event's link in your signature for the length of the event. You need only post once; we'll keep an eye to make sure it stays!
  • More tickets might be given out via short, random events in either our discord channel or in this thread, so keep an eye out!

As an important note -- unfortunately, due to the magic in her system (and her extreme edits), the Morrigan is unable to breed. Her owner will not be able to breed her in future Matope events, bribes, the CC thread, or anywhere else.

With this in mind, if you're ready to participate, please use the code below to claim any tickets.

If you want one of these bucks, you're going to have to put your bets on the winner -- by buying up raffle tickets for your favorite!

This is a simple paid raffle. Due to inflation, this time around tickets are 10 platinum or 100,000,000 gold each. As of yet, there is no cap for the number you can claim, though we might add a cap later.

In order to buy tickets, please start by posting the below code in the thread and then send trade to Matope for the number of tickets you'd like with "TICKETS PLEASE" in the trade title. Thanks to Tiarana for making an amazing sheet for us; ticket numbers will be automatically figured out based on the amount of gold you send. Just make sure that if you're still using gold, your amount ends in 8 zeros, or we'll round to the closest hundred million!

This event runs from August 18th to August 26th.
This event does not count toward the Morrigan.

In October of 2009, the shop had a spooky halloween with the darkspirits event. This event was a halloween-specific celebration with auctions, raffles, dice games, storytelling and more, featuring a series of Kimeti inspired by the gloriously loose theme of 'spirits'. Now this event is being revisited with some exciting new takes by Maxx D!

Do you like scary stories? Here's an event for you!

To participate in this contest, simply pick one of the spirits above -- the ghoul, the shoggoth, the kelpie or the will'o'wisp -- and learn just a little about their story. Once you've got the idea, put a Matope spin on the story: make it something that exists in the swamp, something kin would tell each other. Write the kin version of myths that exist in our world, then use the following form to submit.

If you write your story as a kin telling it, this story can be used for your Legendary Requirements if it exceeds 500 words. You can only submit one entry to this contest, but entries do count toward the Morrigan.

This event runs from August 19th to August 26th.

SPOOKY SCARY SWAMP STORIES!

Story: "You know how my father talks to the spirits of those who've passed beyond right? How he'll sit for hours, and days, not moving or talking and looking dead himself after eating and drinking certain things right? Well, he's told me stories...stories he says he's learned from his time spent where only spirits roam." At Father's Knee's voice was soft, spooky, aware of the young ones gathered around her, a few older ones mixed in trying their best not to seem too interested, and failing miserably.

"He says that there's these lights out there... you have to be careful of them, because they like to lure the young and the old alike off the safe well traveled paths into the deep, dark swamp where no kin ever returns from. Sometimes it seems as if the lights are dancing in the mist, looking like fireflies. Other times like friendly fires. It's hard to say what is and isn't one of these lights..."

Her head dipped down closer, voice a low, ominous whisper. "You know how us Zikwa have our own special glows? Some say that the lights, are really Zikwa who'd passed on, still wandering the swamp looking for company. For a mate. For...who knows why. That they'll take on the appearance of a Zikwa you know, to pull you in, to get you away from all you know and love.

No one knows what happens to the kins that vanish with the lights. Maybe they become lights themselves. Maybe they just vanish. Who knows, they could turn up seasons later, with amazing stories though I've never heard about that happening. Just randomly disappearing kin, who didn't stay on the proper paths, and went wandering off into the swamp all by themselves.

"But what about when it's bright out?"

"Oh young one. Day or night the swamp lights will trick you and take you away. So never, ever follow the lights unless you know for sure who or what it is you're following." her words trailed off and she looked over towards the area her father always settled, able to make out his distinct orange glows even from here, and her head tipped towards him. "Even now he's talking with the spirits.... do you want yours to be the next one he seeks? The next one he delivers messages from to their families?" a chorus of 'no!' rose around her and she gave a slow nod of understanding.

"No kin does. So you'd best listen to what I say. The warning I gave to you tonight." she could see the young kin and the older ones alike staring warily at her, and some of the other zikwa with their glowing marks and she gave a gentle laugh. "Relax. We're inside, and we're safe in here. It's when you're out there alone, even when you think you're safe, that you're not. The lights are sneaky, and will do all they can to trick you remember that. But in here... this is home and we're safe in here."

The young ones scurried off to their mothers sides, the older ones trying not to seem scared, and goading one another to step out of the cave in the dark, to find the lights. She could make out from where she was, the lights of one of the Zikwa she was friends with, and within moments the boisterous youths had fallen silent, uneasy, and from behind them she spoke suddenly, unnoticed by them until that moment. "You'd better be careful. Maybe he's coming to spirit you away." she laughed softly as they cried out in fear and ran off, suddenly no longer feeling brave. As she turned to come back in, she was surprised to see her friend who's lights she'd just seen on the path, behind her. A quick glance back outside showed the lights fading away into nothing, and she moved away from the mouth of the cave.

It was just a story after all.

Wasn't it?

SPOOKY SCARY SWAMP STORIES!

Story: Half Truth said to Changes, her son, when he asked her for a scary story one long, cold night when no other adults were around to tell her that this, perhaps, was not an appropriate story for a child: A long time ago, when the Motherfather's fleas and ticks were smaller and duller than they are today, far before you or I were ever born, the Crane's Family was scattered over the Motherfather. There were of course the Kimeti here in the swamp, but the Acha- that's you- were in the desert, and only the desert. And while their coming was met with much jubilation- yes, dear heart, jubilation, for even then while you and I were still but dreams, I loved you- not everyone who came from the desert came with kindness.

As it so happened, there was a Kimeti buck, a handsome fellow, who fell in love with what he knew could only be a desert spirit. She was a beautiful creature, with burning eyes, and he knew in his heart she couldn't be real- for she was no Kimeti, and only Kimeti had eyes like that. She was like a singing specter, a flirtatious phantasm whose hot kisses and scorching embrace melted his bones. For a short time, they were brilliantly happy, and he felt nothing but tender warmth for her. Even after the sunglow faded from her eyes, and he realized she was a creature of flesh and blood, just like him, he cherished her radiance all the more.

But one night as they lay together, necks entwined in a pool of sweet moonlight, without warning, she ate his heart, smiling as she chewed. He wailed, a horrible twisted howl, keening over and over, begging her for answers. Did she do this for love? He could forgive her if it was for love. Did she do this to nourish their unborn children? He could forgive her if it was for that. But there were no children, and there was no love- she was a wicked, selfish thing and prided herself above all others. He was fine enough to take as a lover, which meant he was a jewel, a prize, a fruit to be plucked- and like all ripe fruits, heavy and dripping, he was sweetest at first bite.

So she ate his heart, and he died, and she thought that would be the end of it- but a crime so heinous could never go unnoticed, for it was abhorrent to the Motherfather. There were predators, and there were prey, and they were in their proper order- but this, this was a perversion, a twisted mockery of what should be. She was found, later on, surrounded by his grisly remains, his dead eyes watching her. Was that a tear in his unblinking eye? Surely it was. They came upon her, chewing the marrow from his bones, flush and content. The fire sparkled in her eyes once more, but her beautiful smile was outlined in blood, a stain that would not fade.

And so she was banished, never to return.

Haughtily, she tossed her proud head, the sun gleaming off her horns, as she stalked away. A feverish wind blew, sending ripples across the swamp as she set out towards the sands. But even though she was a monster of the burning desert, her hooves had touched the cool waters of the swamp. She was doubly cursed, and she didn't know it until she'd carried her disgrace back to the desert sand.

It was then that the Ache set in.

At first, she ignored it; what was mere pain, compared to what she could do? She pushed past it as it twisted her guts, bent her double, froze her muscles. When she could no longer walk, she staggered. When she could no longer stagger, she crawled, dragging herself along, inching her way through the dunes. The searing sun scorched her inside and out, and she found no refuge, no oasis to soothe her.

Some say her journey took years, or months, or it was over almost as soon as it began. That's not important. What's important is that when she reached the swamp again, desperate for sanctuary- but it was as if the swamp had disappeared, for while she could see the shimmer of water in the distance, with each exertion forward, she only found herself pawing through sand. As much as she tried, the swamp came no nearer- and the Ache didn't subside.

It was only then that she cried out in anguish. For five years, or five months, or five days, she lay there, begging to die- but the land was not done with her. She took a life that was not hers to take; justice demanded then that she keep it, as well as her own. She would not die, but she would live a living death.

She's still out there, stalking the night. She can't move well, not after the land's punishment. She hobbles through silent hunting grounds, the gleaming bones of travelers she's eaten her only companions. She mewls for help with a sparse, rasping voice, hoping to prey on the kindness she prays for. She cannot command, she cannot chase- but she can certainly entice and beg for aid, even as you shrink away from her accursed specter. She can follow. She can wait, wait until the sun drops you- and then she can feed.

She likes to eat hearts. The bigger, the better.

But as a warning to desert travelers, she's no longer beautiful. She's a twisted thing, a warped shell of what she once was. Her sensual smile has fallen to gnashing tooth and haggard lip, and virtually nothing remains of her former form. She is a victim of those burning winds that heralded her arrival; as they once played at her back, now they face her head on, flaying her hide and wearing down her bones where they've pushed through. She reeks of carrion and rot, and her lushness has withered. No softness remains, only a crackling hardness, baked to leather by the blazing sun. She looks like nothing, but she also looks like everything; some see in her a broken hound, others a battered desert lion. Some see the impossible, a crocodile in the desert. Some see nothing but the shape of death. Some see an Acha, but not once they get close.

Of course, by then, it doesn't matter what they see, for it's too late. She might look pitiful, but she's fueled by hatred and hunger.

Her motives are debated by those who've never seen her. Does she hunt travelers in order to restore herself, out of a twisted belief that by consuming their essence, she'll be able to take her old shape again? Can she change her shape, or are kin only seeing a strange sort of mirage when they look upon her? Does she really hunt them, or are her pitiable moans a misguided attempt to warn others away from treacherous spots in the desert? Are those sun-bleached bones really her prey, or is she merely their guardian?

Nobody knows, because nobody who's seen her has survived.

But she's out there, surely. Everybody knows that.

And that is why when you cross the desert, you don't look back.

Story: It was getting late. The sun was beginning to set, and Count was on his way home. Suddenly, out of the periphery, he noticed two small children running through the swamp. When the kiddies ran up to him, they asked him if he had seen their ball. Count shrugged and told them to return home as soon as possible. The children shook their heads fervently and exclaimed, "not without our ball!" Count sighed. He then began to recount the tale of the Will-o'-wisp that haunts the swamp.

"The Will-o'-wisp is a ghostly creature that will allure you," he began. "Once you spot one, you will see another... and another... and drawn to them you will be. Before you know it, you're chasing them just to see them again." The children looked at him with bemusement. "Um.. okay? That sounds pretty cool." Count snapped, "They have an agenda. They feed on your fear and hopelessness. So they will take you deep in the swamp, somewhere you will never be found. Scream and cry as you might, no one will hear you. You will be taken off-route and you will never be able to find your way home again."

The children looked up at him with wide eyes. "Uh... okay, bye mister!" And with that the children abandoned their search for their ball and ran out of the swamp. Count nodded feeling rather pleased with himself and walked back home.

SPOOKY SCARY SWAMP STORIES!

Story:

Locust was limping when she joined the family, her back leg held stiff and curled up protectively as she slowly entered the clearing. Plague immediately started to fuss, exclaiming over the bite that had hobbled her.

It was messy, surrounded by torn skin and still slowly oozing blood. The creature that had bitten her had gotten away with some flesh in its teeth.

Take Root took one look at the wound and swallowed hard, her sudden unease infecting very family member until Buried Alive sent some of the younger members away to collect healing herbs.

“What is it?” Plague demanded, voice shrill and panicked, as if expecting his daughter to drop dead any second.

Take Root shook her head, freeing herself from whatever thought had affected her so strongly. “It’s only another story,” she said. “And now isn’t a good time to tell it.”

---

Later as Locust was curled up and mending, the herbs smashed together to create a paste and gently rubbed onto the bite, did Take Root take up the story. Buried Alive at her side, his own, deeper voice adding to the tale whenever she trailed off.

“In the caves, it’s easy to get hurt. Cave worms have a nasty bite, a small shift in the rock can cause a cave in and you might take a tumble that breaks a leg. We can often sense the heat of a wound on others, it pulsates, and sometimes we could treat it... and sometimes we couldn’t. That is the way of life.”

“And sometimes,” Buried Alive chimed in, “a wound is not just a wound.”

“Sometimes,” Take Root said, “the wound is not quite a bite. But a tear in the flesh that is frozen to the touch, given by something that shouldn’t be.”

“And it spreads and it rots.”

“And our brother or sister who has been inflicted begins to change. The cold creeps through them, makes them hungry. Their heart continues to beat even as their body begins to crumble, their flesh opens and begins to leak, great sores appear and grow until muscles begin to detach, limbs fall by the wayside, eyes pop from their sockets...

... and still they don’t die.”

“And still they hunger.”

Take Root shuddered. “There are many terrifying things in the caves, like that which lurks below, the dead and not dead, may it never rise-” may it never rise, echoed from each mouth around them, “but this I fear most, that which devours its own kin.”

“They must be stopped, castaway in the darkest depths, for all that is left for them is their need to consume. They will not stop, they have forgotten who they were or who they loved. Family means nothing,” Buried Alive’s voice filled with sorrow. “And they will eat any flesh, living or dead. Some say in an attempt to regain what they have lost, to find some warmth, but there is no return from this undeath.”

“There is no fate as worse.”

There was a brief silence as everyone digested this new tale and Plague once again thanked the MotherFather for not bringing him into being within the caves, until someone spoke, Locust with her voice shrill with worry:

“But it was just a caiman!”

SPOOKY SCARY SWAMP STORIES!

Story:

"Beware the water witch," your father had said, when you were but a colt, and still easily wide-eyed, "who sits at the edge of the treacherous marsh, to the North."

"Beware the water witch," your mother had said, "she may look like an ordinary Kiokote - even fetching, with her glossy locks - but her dripping mane is laced with tangled weeds, and across her back she bears the marks of her sin: clear hoofprints, pale and dry against the dark damp of her pelt.

"For only the flesh of other Kin could satiate her hunger, so far has she fallen, the water witch. She will call to you, sweet words that draw you to her - and once your hoof might touch her wet-slicked fur, there! You are stuck fast - no force on earth could free you - and then she will dive, deep, into the treacherous marsh, and there she will drown you, and there she will strip every last trace of meat from your bones.

"Few kin have returned from the treacherous marsh. Only enough to warn of the water witch."

You had been a colt, still easily wide-eyed, but even so you had easily dismissed the silly tale. It was quite clearly, you had declared, a fabrication to warn baby foals from talking to strangers. But you were not a baby foal, you'd stomped your hoof, you were a grown colt. And then you had grown further, into a young buck, and forgotten the tale as you'd struck out from home to wander the Swamp, to the North.

And here you were, a young buck, at the edge of a marsh you had not believed existed: as treacherous a marsh as you might have imagined from your childhood, black and thick, and still as a rock.

And there she was, at the edge of a marsh you had not believed existed: as fetching as your mother had warned, with her glossy locks - her dripping mane laced through with tangled weeds.

Clear hoofprints across her dark, damp back.

So much for a silly tale, you thought, wild-eyed and full of your hammering heart. She was unfolding, moving towards you, strolling along the edge of the marsh. She was saying words, and her mouth looked sweet.

She will call to you, you knew, sweet words that draw you to her -

Of course you ran.

Along the edge of the treacherous marsh, you ran, and every time you looked behind you, she was running after, sweet mouth moving still - so you ran harder. Harder – till your luck ran out: you tripped over a creeping root, and tumbled into the treacherous marsh.

And treacherous it was indeed, for the water, black and thick, was not mere water: beneath the glassy splash, the marsh was a bog – and you were quickly becoming mired in the mire!

Sinking, faster than you'd like, the peat too thick for your buried limbs to move – you thrashed your hooves, desperate for purchase, but there was none, and you were sinking…sinking…

Then you heard it, her words. Not as sweet as you'd have thought.

"- m' back!" you heard.

You turned your head.

There was a vine between her teeth, held fast, pulled taut, from where it wrapped around the tree that felled you. Her body was half-submerged into the bog, her back to you.

"Push up," you heard, the words squeezed, urgent, past the vine between her gleaming teeth, "on m' back, for Swamp –"

You like to think it was only a moment – barely a moment – for which you stared, dumbfounded, before you had the good sense to take her advice, and push yourself up, inch by straining inch, against her back, until your hindlimbs were freed from the muck, and, together, you made your painful path back to the shore.

"Honestly," she gasped, scolding, when the both of you, sodden to the skin, were safe once more upon the bank, "the likes of ye keep comin' and ye never listen! 'Th' bog's dangerous, ye'd get stuck innit so watch yer step,' I said, but nooooo…"

You hung your head, you scraped at the bank, you'd look away – you'd look anywhere else, if you could, but the only thing you could stare at was your hoofprints, pale and dry, where you'd pushed down so desperately, against the dark damp of her pelt.

SPOOKY SCARY SWAMP STORIES!

Story: You remembered the stories as you stood at the graveyard, bones at your feet.

Never leave your dead unburied, the herd had whispered. It was the one ancient rule they always kept to, although it didn't stop the rain from sweeping everyone away. You might go mad with grief, they had warned. You never held much stock to the story. It was an ancient myth, you had assumed. Something parents told their young to frighten them for one reason or another.

Still, you remembered it — why wouldn't you? They repeated it so often it was almost a mantra at this point. You just... forgot how it started. Maybe if you thought on it a little longer you would remember.... maybe?

There once was a Zikwa. That sounded right. It'd do. There was a Zikwa who loved another more than anything. It was that kind of love that would bind you to that person forever — the kind you never understood. How could you love only one? Forever? Regardless, that wasn't the story. The Zikwa and their partner lived together, alone, for a long, long, long time. They never had kids, although some stories claim they did. You didn't care which version you heard.

Eventually, one passed, as nature goes. The Zikwa's mate perished naturally and the Zikwa was, obviously, heartbroken. They wailed and cried; pleaded and begged. Of course, the swamp didn't favor their pleas. Death was death, through and through. Most came to accept that, but the Zikwa didn't. Instead, they collected the body of their loved one and laid them in their den, waiting.

And wait they did. For days they laid next to the decaying body, reverently hoping and praying. Naturally, the body stayed in resting, but the Zikwa didn't lose hope. It maddened them, as each day they awoke to a scene they could have avoided. Madness was exactly what must have happened, as the story ends abruptly and, frankly, disgustingly.

When the grief grew to strong the Zikwa ended up consuming their mate. You would remember how, during this part of the story, bile would rise in your throat. They consumed their partner and wandered aimlessly from graveyard to graveyard, waiting for their beloved to return despite what they had themselves done. Some say they've seen this Zikwa, decayed in their grieving glory as they shamble through fog and murk. Others say if you had seen them you wouldn't return home, as the Zikwa has lost their mind.

You say it's either all hogwash or a twisted tale of something else that had happened.

Yet, after all these years of scoffing and denying your herds strange scare tale, you still keep it in mind when you pass the local graveyards. Mounds of dirt, both recently and previously dug, laid unceremoniously on the ground, marked by rocks and twigs. Your eyes lock on something in the distance — something stumbling. The story flickers in your mind, biles rises in your throat. You know it's silly; foolish, even. However, the something jerks their body a step in your direction and you feel your heart quicken.

.... Could it be?

SPOOKY SCARY SWAMP STORIES!

Story: You're not really sure how you got here. This isn't a place in the swamp that you normally frequent. It's distant and lonely, hung with dripping moss and dotted with deep pools of water, and here you met her. She didn't seem startled to see you; she only asked if you wanted to be guided back out. On the way back, as you follow her, she tells you a story.

Once, there was a kimeti, and he died. It's not important how, not really. He had been searching for something. It's not really important what that was, either. What's important is that he died, and he died angry. He died in a place where he would never be found, and his flesh and his bones sank slowly into the mud. His flesh and his bones decayed, but his anger did not. His blood seeped into the mud, red into black, and something of him lived on.

The anger that had once been a kimeti became the blood and the mud. It seeped into the earth where he had died, and it lurked there unmoving. It slept. It brooded. It bubbled up from time to time, red and black and formless. It waited.

In time, other kin came to the place where the anger that had once been a kimeti lurked. They, too, were searching for something. It's not really important what. What's important is that they came looking, and they disturbed the place where the anger lay, and the anger awoke. It heard the voices of the others who had come, and it roiled and swirled in the mud, awakening red from black once again. It became hungry.

The others who searched made a mistake. One of them stepped hoof into the mud where the anger waited. Disturbed, it boiled forth, engulfing her, and it pulled her down and down and down to join the anger that waited. But this was not enough. The mud and the blood bubbled up out of the swamp, and it went hunting.

In the night, the others heard voices, familiar voices. Voices calling, voices begging for help. Voices that could not be there, voices that should have been safe at home, and in among those voices sounded a soft fluting singing, weird and otherworldly. One by one, they went out into the dark in search of the voices they heard. One by one, they went to find the voices they could not resist, and one by one, they were eaten, eaten by the anger that had once been a kimeti.

Far out in the swamp, where there are deep pools of water and the moss hangs dripping from the branches, they lie deep down in the mud. The searchers did not find what they came to seek. They found only anger, anger and blood and mud, blood and mud and death. Somewhere far out in the swamp they lie in wait, sleeping, brooding. Perhaps, if someone comes searching, they will awaken, and once again the voices in t he dark will sound.

It would be wise not to disturb them.

In July of 2008, the shop had an exciting new contest with the stormy night event. Here, two twins were offered up to lucky winners, with a twist -- the first twins in Matope, and the introduction of the Kimeti's purple larval state! Now this event is being revisited with a new pair of twins by Sullivan!

If you've got a friend you'd like to share a prize with, these growing kin are for you!

For this contest, we're revisiting the original theme exactly. If you'd like to participate, just write a story in two hundred [200] words or fewer about a kin in a stormy night. The story could be about your own kin, about kin in general, about the world, or about some mythological story that can then be added to the Legends, Folklore, and Storytelling forum in the guild.

The winner of this contest will get the twin of their choice -- the male or the female. The other, they will get to give to a friend of their choice. Use the following form to submit.

This event runs from July 27th to August 4th.

IT WAS A DARK AND STORMY NIGHT....

Your Entry:
The stinging points of cold pelted the ground slowly at first, and then steadily more and more. Soon, a breeze joined, tilting the stinging little pellets in an angle that made them hard to avoid. The tiny hooves scooted farther into the mud, back against the large overarching roots of the great willow, and he tucked his nose against his chest to avoid the burn of the cold air. The howling began, whistling between the trees and rising into loud roars that quieted down. Most were frightened by the sound, but he only thought it sounded rather mournful. He felt bad for the lonely wind, who called out to her endless darkness, finding no friendly answers. The rain dripped from the leaves and splattered the top of his head. Then suddenly, a loud crack of thunder, a bright flash of light... He clambered out and bolted headlong into the swamp to find home, heart pounding, fur standing on end, fear rippling with every flash of lightning. Adventures could be fun and exciting, but he could do so another day. He watched the sky as he bounded through the trees and then thought, "I guess the wind found friends after all."

Moonstone Dazzle Entry
IT WAS A DARK AND STORMY NIGHT....

Your Entry: The storm had brought them together. How wonderful to know her caring and her love in this dire time were keeping him warm. Her neck was pressed beneath his, a solid presence to keep him upright when his legs were so tired. What a kind spirit she was. Perhaps they would meet each other again, in the next life. Perhaps he would be so lucky as to know her love again.

“Please,” she sobbed against him, her body the only warmth in the raising water. She was here, she was real— no matter what became of this, he would remember her.

“Please,” she repeated, “we’ll find a way to get you out. Just hold on.” Even if they both knew it to be untrue, it was a comfort. The water was already to his neck, growing deeper with every passing moment. She would swim out of here, to go on living. For both of them.

“You need to go,” he spoke gently, curling his head to meet hers. It would be the last thing he said to her. With a broken noise she was gone, leaving him to his fate.

Farewell, he thought. Knowing peace as the storm took him.

Lirilei entry
IT WAS A DARK AND STORMY NIGHT....

Your Entry: "It's going to get you." "What is?" "It. That scary, nameless shadow, that likes to hunt kin when the weather is bad like this." "Nu-uh." "Sure it will!" she insisted "Likes to slink in the shadows, hide behind and under things, below the water. Never know when it'll strike, where it'll be." Log watched the young ones shift nervously, looking around them, and at the pool of water not far from them as a storm raged over head.

They'd been telling scary stories, and Log's had started off unusually. Now, they were snared in the grasp of her story. "Some say it has weeds for hair, others snakes. Some say it's not really anything alive. But you gotta be careful...because if you're not it'll GET YOU!"

As she yelled that her brother Dive rose up from the water with a loud noise, tugging the tail of one of the young ones sending them all fleeing deeper into the cave, the siblings laughing as the rain continued to pour down outside, the storm outside muffling their laughter.

Nymphiea entry
IT WAS A DARK AND STORMY NIGHT....

Your Entry: He didn't know how he got there, or how the waves had begun to crash in on him. The storm was the only thing he understood; after all, he had followed it. The drought had been suffocating, obliterating everything around him in a wave of heat and stench. The promised storm was a deities send, and when it came he had no intention of leaving it.

How he got on the shore was beyond him. How he even kept up with the storm was another question — it almost was as if the storm waited for him, but that was silly. Either way, he stood there, sand digging into his hooves as the waves licked at his heels.

What lurked under the waves was his new captive — four illuminated blue eyes. Red swirled under the water, growing closer with each second. He didn't move, feeling the cold raindrops hit his water-starved skin.

Then the red grabbed him and he was no more.

Pandora Talie entry
IT WAS A DARK AND STORMY NIGHT....

Your Entry:
Moonfrost sits with friends by a small pond between the roots of massive old tree. He begins to tell a tale, “it was a dark and stormy night, much like tonight.” Lightning flashes over the small, stagnant pond. Long, spidery shadows spring from gnarled old trees along the water’s edge, the low rumble of thunder follows. “A tribe was camping along the edge of a pond.” They grin. “Nobody knew why the pond was there, it never went dry, there were no streams feeding it, nor did any leave. Some believed that an underground spring kept it filled, as occasionally a bubble or two would escape from it’s center.” Pausing for effect, he cups an ear. Thunder crashes making them all jump.

Moonfrost continues, “the storm that night was particularly bad. The worst ever, some venture. It started as a small sound, described as a burbling, like a gentle brook. Then a large one, like a waterfall. From the depths arose a great beast, they say. However, no one really knows what happened. The sole survivor of the tribe went mad from the ordeal and now merely murmurs of strange sounds and some terrible thing that came from the pond.

As if I even care entry
IT WAS A DARK AND STORMY NIGHT....

Your Entry: Clouds formed above, dark and thick, a monotonous mass moving ever so slowly across the canopy, consuming the stars. It was silent, save for the usual sounds of the swamp. The clouds looked heavy, but they bore no weight. What light there was cast shadows long and low across the ground at their feet. Wind whirred through the roots of the mangroves and between their hooves.
All at once the silence was broken by a thunderous boom as light pulsated through the clouds and splintered across the sky. Shadows masqueraded around them as the sound of branches snapping filled the atmosphere and shook the earth. One drop. Two. A bevy of water cascaded from the clouds over them, washing away their fears. They felt at peace within the chaos.

Blinded By Silence Entry
IT WAS A DARK AND STORMY NIGHT....

Your Entry: On a dark and stormy night, a tired mother thanks the Swamp and bares her children on a dark shore that cuts through the swamp like a claw. She leaves her eggs, for a moment or forever, no one knows, but it was the MotherFather's mind that she may never see those eggs again. Fast currents tug at the water's edge as the river swells, snatching away anything it could grasp. These eggs were the first of the victims claimed that night.

But not all was lost. A single egg is swept up. Past sharp rocks, fallen trees, and the hungry mouths of the riverborn, the egg is carried until, at last, the river empties into the deepest lake in Matope. The water carried her gently now, sweeping her into the entrance of an underwater cave long since abandoned and deposits her small egg onto the smooth rocky shore of an air pocket deep inside.

It was there, on that stony shore that her egg splits, spilling her into the world and awakening her from her dream of shifting waves and raging winds. Her tiny jaws gape only to hear her sounds reverberate back to her.

A sad, lonely echo...

Maxx D Entry
IT WAS A DARK AND STORMY NIGHT....

Your Entry: It was dark.
It was storming.
And it was night.

The totoma looked out its cave shelter, feeling the water puddle at its feet, hoof fluff weighing heavier with every step. It was pitch-dark, save the flashes of lighting that lit the sky like an indictment. What was its sin, besides daring to exist on this dark, stormy night?

The totoma peered out, head pelted by rain as the thunder arrived, fascinated by the light.

The claps rung close to the bolts that struck nearer.

Then in a split second, it came together, and the totoma fell. Such was natural selection

Scaramouche Fandango Entry
IT WAS A DARK AND STORMY NIGHT....

Your Entry: It was funny, she thought, how much rain could hurt. Each drop was a hornet’s sting. The howling wind hurt to breathe. Lightning was the only illumination, but in any case, her eyes were tightly shut against the pelting rain. It didn’t much matter- she knew where she was going, and neither rain nor wind nor dark of night would stop her.

She was on a mission.

A bolt of lightning, and she saw them. A doe, sides bulging, breathing heavily as she rested. A haggard buck, standing over her protectively. Both were so young, almost too young. The doe’s belly swelled with sacs that would be the first for both of them. Her time would be soon.

Soon, but not now. There was still time.

Fear flashed on their faces as thunder boomed, then melted into recognition. The heavily pregnant doe mouthed something that might have been “Grandmother!” and in response, she called out her blessing. Her words were lost to the storm, but it didn’t matter.
The Swamp heard her, after all. A storm might rage, but she was still the Motherfather’s will embodied. After all, dark and stormy nights led to brighter, greener days.

Tiarana Entry
IT WAS A DARK AND STORMY NIGHT....

Your Entry:
It was raining the kind of rain that made you think you'd made a wrong turn and fallen in the river when The Doe sidled under my tree.

"My sand dog is missing," she sobbed dramatically.

"Well, ma'am, I'm sure it will turn up tomorrow morning," I said, pointedly staring out at the deluge.

"My sand dog is missing," she said again with a dangerous glint in her eye that meant business.

"I'll get my furs," I said.

For hours I searched in that typhoon. I couldn't see past the end of my nose and I had no clues to go on. I was firmly convinced the storm had something to do with case. Call it a hunch. When it started looking like morning and the mutt still hadn't shown up, I decided to return to my tree and get some shut-eye.

What should I discover but my pile of sleeping furs - gone! All gone! The Doe had taken me for a rube and I'd fallen for it absolutely. So if you see a doe looking to hawk a big pile of furs, let me know, would you? I'd like to throw her in the river.

Eevee Is Best entry
IT WAS A DARK AND STORMY NIGHT....

Your Entry: He'd heard the stories of a strange yellow spider that only came out on dark, stormy nights, so he waited for one so he could find this spider. "Tonight is the night that I'll find that spider." He walked into a cave he had journeyed through many a time so he'd known the interior's layout. He'd walked about for a while and spotted a new opening in the cave's walls. He wondered where it lead and entered the gap in the wall. As he journeyed deeper in he'd noticed the darkening of the cave and the increasing amount of webs. This has got to be the place I'd heard about. He searched around the webs and found it. A small, strange looking spider he'd never seen before. He collected the spider, left the cave, and felt glad to have proven the story true.

Jun D entry
IT WAS A DARK AND STORMY NIGHT....

Your Entry:

It was a dark and stormy night. Suddenly, a crack rang out.

"What was that," a doe then said, peering out from beneath the cover of the brush.

There was no reply for a moment after, and then a buck crept out from between the roots of a giant mangrove.

"Sounds like a tree gave in," he said, craning his neck into the darkness.

He saw nothing.

"Somewhere," he said.

They looked at each other, or would have, if they could see.

"You'll catch your death from cold out there," a grizzled Totoma chastened, sticking his head out from an overhanging rock, "this is no time to worry about trees. The storm will go, and then you can count."

Well, he was right. Wasn't he? He was right. The storm comes, and it will go. They returned to shelter, silent once more.

Somewhere, a way, but just a little way away, the pale body of a foal washed slowly down the marsh. It would never be found. It would return to the Swamp, none knowing.

Somewhere, just a little way away, a cluster of sacs, abandoned, but safe, in the nook of a tree, lay dreaming.

The storm would pass.

Ruriska entry
IT WAS A DARK AND STORMY NIGHT....

Your Entry:

They didn’t know about the storm.

It raged above, turned the world to wild madness, a night of despair. An onslaught of wind and rain, like waves in an ocean, crashing with great force into anything that dared stand their ground. Trees bowed and roots tore, kin ran and hid, huddled together, prayed for the MotherFather’s wrath to ease.

Deep below the earth there was only darkness.

And the gentle drip drip drip of water.

Until the drip was a trickle.

And then the trickle a stream.

Then a roaring torrent, rushing through every gap in the rock. And they knew of it then, as water swept through the dark, tight spaces and drowned anyone or anything unlucky enough to be in its way; the storm had reached below.

Suishii entry
IT WAS A DARK AND STORMY NIGHT....

Your Entry:

It was a dark and stormy night. What was normally dry ground was now a rushing river, and Spice watched with great intensity as someone very foolish was trying to cross it.

Clinging to some scrubby greenery one one side, the fool was trying, one leg at a time, to reach across the rapids to solid ground. Occasionally, a bit of debris or high rush of water would disturb this river-crosser, cause them to lose balance, and give them a thorough dunking in the stream.

Finally, after much trial and error, they got one foot on dry ground. As quick as that, they scrambled across and stood on the other bank for just long enough to clean their antennae of clinging water droplets before marching on.

Spice let out a breath that she didn't realize she was holding as the insect disappeared into the loam. Foolish, brave ant! What adventures it must have seen on its travels in that tiny world, where lizards lie in wait like caiman and a trickle is a rushing rapid...

Reluctantly, she rolled over and drifted back to sleep.

purplerosesbeauty entry
IT WAS A DARK AND STORMY NIGHT....

Your Entry: Azalea ushered his sons to sleep, settling together as the night sky darkened and grew heavy with clouds. They begged him for a story, and as a doting father, he obliged.

"Once there was a kin, who was a flower. He was very lonely, as the only flower he could see no matter how he swayed and moved. One night, rather than rest, he decided to stay awake. As it happened, that night was dark, and stormy. Lightning struck, clouds rolled, and the warmth was quickly seeped from his bones.

Suddenly, he was no longer alone! When he looked into the sky, he saw a kin who was a storm. Frightening, but beautiful. She came down to him, and asked what he was doing. 'Little flower, why are you not resting?' she asked.

'I have been lonely to sleep, lovely storm,' he replied.

The storm stopped, as if confused. She then smiled, and came down from the sky, her fur alight with lightning and clouds. 'Then I will stay with you, just a bit longer.'

She was not a flower like him, but she was company. Finally, the little flower felt happy with his new friend."

SilverShieldwolf entry
IT WAS A DARK AND STORMY NIGHT....

Your Entry:
It started with a drip. The slow drip, drop of water down onto the ground. Young ones were herded to higher ground by mothers who kept looking up at the sky. They knew what was coming, yet the young buck watching was hard headed. The families that passed him by, shook their heads, muttering to each other. He felt he could beat the storm, that it would bow down to him!
The storm let loose a flash of lightning near the buck. It would bow to no creature. The buck moved back from his spot on the cliff. Maybe this time...he started to step back, only for the rain to come cascading down and having the river rushing and over the banks. The buck turned tail and raced up the mountain, into a cave to hide during the worst storm of his life.

FrostyPeaches entry
IT WAS A DARK AND STORMY NIGHT....

Your Entry: A small group of kin, no more than three, were huddled close against a fallen tree that once was full of life. Another flash of bright yellow lightning flashed through the sky for a few seconds as thunder roared right after it. "Stay close..." said the young brave Meti. The small Acha foal shuddered as they watched the storm go on while feeling the ground shake under their hooves. "It is not wise to lean against trees in storms, but with rainfall this heavy, we don't have a choice," said the young Totoma, interrupting the Meti. The night was long and grim. They could barely see what's ahead of them. "...Nights like these is when 'they' come out. My mama said that they prey on foals like us and eat egg sacs when no one is watching over them... It is very important that we watch out for one another until the storm is over. They come and they take you when you are careless. When you are caught unawares... Because..." the Meti swallowed hard, eyes on full alert even in the dark, a little frightened as the story ends... "Once thunder roars no one will hear you scream..."

fluorescein entry
IT WAS A DARK AND STORMY NIGHT....

Your Entry: The kin knew she was in a treat once the sun went down. A storm brewed suddenly and she was the recipient of a fat raindrop and then another and more until it was unrelenting as the day was long. Mud that once caked her hooves reached for her knees and tail as head hair weighed her down, obscuring her line of vision. She was miserable and a fine miracle she hadn't slipped and broken her neck. Storms were much better enjoyed from a distance she thought. Still, she marched onward with the dream of a warm spot near a fire. There, in the distance was a cave. it looked big, unimposing, but most importantly-dry. She entered the lip and met with fierce, glowing eyes. Well then, she was trading one adventure for another and that potentially dry place to slumber was going to be hard won. The kin lunged.

Kickflipping Cow entry
IT WAS A DARK AND STORMY NIGHT....

Your Entry: Dark stormy nights like this was perfect for Shadow's Bite. She could track her prey and the sound of the rain and wind covered her hoof steps, and they never heard her coming until it was too late. A sharp hoof to a head or her teeth on them the last thing they felt. She took every chance she got to hunt to her hearts content on nights like this, they suited her after all.

In September of 2008, Raisin-kin celebrated the seasons with the early equinox event. There were kimeti representing the winter, spring, summer and fall. Now this event is being revisited with some exciting new takes by Phoenix Kiss on these same themes, and also on the equinox and solstice!

Which of the four seasons is your favorite? Maybe it's better not to pick, since this event celebrates them all!

This contest is a simple poetry event -- no restrictions on form or style, on length or content. The only thing your poem must contain is a mention of all four of the seasons. Be creative, put your own spin on it, and have fun!

This event runs from August 5th to August 11th.

Maxx D Entry
CELEBRATE THE WHOLE YEAR ROUND!!

Entry: summer falls at once
turns to winter beckoning
and so she will spring.
Preference List: spring

Pigxels Entry
CELEBRATE THE WHOLE YEAR ROUND!!

Entry:
Around the clock in a big wide arc
I felt the earth chill and change and rot
The chilly white snow blew past my nose
And the whipping wind blows, to the sky it rose
But then a fountain sprang forth from beneath my feet
And the flowers spread on, for death they'd cheat
But it didn't last long as the sun rose higher
Out in the fields, the grass caught fire
And it spread and spread until it reached a tree
Who turned orange and yellow with the weakening heat
And on through the forest the leaves fell slowly
Down to the ground by my feet, so lowly
And then again came that whisper of cold
Just like grandpa said in tales of old
About the arc around the clock
But that's just what I've been told
Preference List: Spring, Winter, Summer, Fall

Tara de Draiocht Entry
CELEBRATE THE WHOLE YEAR ROUND!!

Entry:
Pretty colours form.
Rebirth, I come alive--oh!
Simple joy of life.

The heat and sun shines,
All things are alive and green.
Enjoy while it lasts.

For we cannot stop-
Falling branches and leaves drop.
The world from dying.

Weathered and worn cold,
Death, a cycle continues
To begin again.

Preference List: Spring, Winter, Summer, Autumn.

xKOVAKtheWOLFx entry
CELEBRATE THE WHOLE YEAR ROUND!!

the beginning
flowers blooming
a new life starting

summer
endless heat
sunshine and sweat
staying cool and hydrated

autumn

frozen lakes and ending

Preference List: winter, spring, autumn, summer

Moonstone Dazzle entry
CELEBRATE THE WHOLE YEAR ROUND!!

Entry: I find comfort in the winter winds
They are home to me
The burning cold upon my face
The numbness in my limbs
Winter does not lie
She is cold and cruel out of love
No red to hide her thorns
No green to hide her rotting leaves
Spring is cruel in her gentility
That it will always be so
That she will always be so soft
Summer lets you think her warm
Then takes
And takes
And leaves you with nothing in her wake
Fall dances in on summer’s tails
A false reprieve
A soothing smile to hide
How your world falls apart
That she will always be here
That it will always be so
Winter makes no pretense
She stings your lungs
So that you will breathe deeper
She slows your heart
So that you will run faster
Bends and breaks
So like the spring you will grow
She is cruel in love
And I shall be the same
Preference List: Spring, Winter, Fall, Summer

Nymphiea entry
CELEBRATE THE WHOLE YEAR ROUND!!

Entry: Generous summer
A golden growing sun sings
with the perfect ray

Early easy breeze
An odd little petal grows
in time with the spring

Unsteady autumn
A single lost leaf falls
under the willow

Biting wintertime
A more dangerous cold comes
in spite of the lights

Preference List: Spring, Winter, Autumn, Summer

LOLTERGEIST entry
CELEBRATE THE WHOLE YEAR ROUND!!

Entry: Harsh is the summer, burning the leaves
They fall in the Autumn, golden debris.
Stark is the Winter, barely a sound.
Revive in the Spring, life all around.
Preference List: Spring, Winter, Summer, Autumn

CascadingRayn entry
CELEBRATE THE WHOLE YEAR ROUND!!

Entry:
Seasons. Spring, Summer,
The Cycle goes Round and Round.
Fall, Winter, Forever.

Spring, rebirth and life
Rain Falling. Flowers Blooming.
Then hotter days come.

Summer. youth and light
The sun's out. Ready to play
Then the days cool down.

Fall. harvest and change
Colors Changing. Leaves Falling.
Then the leaves are gone.

Winter. cold and still
Snow is falling. The World? Still.
Then another round.
~

Preference List: Spring, Winter, Autumn, Summer

Pandora Talie entry
CELEBRATE THE WHOLE YEAR ROUND!!

Entry:

All Summer, bloodthirsty flies will annoy.
They flit and nag they are quite the killyjoy.

Autumn is when they start to disappear.
The best season, Winter, they are nowhere near.

Spring in the swamp is a beautiful event.
Until Summer swings around with it’s annoying torment.

Preference List: Spring, Winter, Summer, Autumn

Moxxiie entry
CELEBRATE THE WHOLE YEAR ROUND!!

Entry:
❁ Hello Spring! New life has begun.
☀ Good Day Summer! Full of Fun.
❧ Hey there Fall! It's time to rest.
❄ So long Winter. All things must die.

The cycle of life is like that of the seasons.
We are born into the Spring which represents new life and the naviety of youth.
As we mature, we grow into the best part of our lives, Summer, when we are old enough to enjoy what life has to offer.
Autumn represents the years in which we start to wind down and grow tired.
As in nature, things begin to die in Winter to give room for new birth again in Spring.

Preference List:
Winter, Spring, Summer, Autumn

Lirilei entry
CELEBRATE THE WHOLE YEAR ROUND!!

Entry: Her cold embrace, a chilling kiss, snow upon the ground.
Flowers budding, birds singing, life blooming anew.
Fiery sun, cloudless sky, seek refuge in shade and water.
A symphony of color scattered both in tree and upon the ground waiting…
Once more…
For her cold embrace…a chilling kiss, and snow upon the ground.

Preference List: Winter, Spring, Summer, Autumn

Jun D entry
CELEBRATE THE WHOLE YEAR ROUND!!

Entry:

The winter frost may kill, but what does not?
the strangling spring;
the summer sun;
the madding moon of fall.

Scaramouche Fandango entry
CELEBRATE THE WHOLE YEAR ROUND!!

Entry: You came to me on gilded knee,
Bowing deep and courteously.
Golden boughs topped regal brows,
You spoke with the heat that passion allows.
But soon you'd left me for another;
I never thought you'd leave like summer.

With dying leaves you did return,
As if you hadn't left me spurned.
The nights were colder, you seemed older,
Or maybe just complex and bolder.
My ardor tempered with harvest moon's pall,
I took you in just like the fall.

You swore to me with frosted breath
And while the trees did feign their death
We lay conjoined 'midst gentle flakes-
But your heart wanders, my heart breaks
I hadn't much faith left to splinter,
I just assumed you'd stay the winter.

But spring has come with gentle rains,
And each new leaf relieves my pains.
The cycle has begun anew,
And life blooms forth, even from you.
For spring's the season of rebirth,
And your heartless body feeds the earth.

Preference List: Spring, winter, summer, autumn

Eevee Is Best entry

-PR0X1MA-C3NTAUR1- entry
CELEBRATE THE WHOLE YEAR ROUND!!

Entry:
Many years go by
And I love you all the same
Seasons passing by

Always my love stays
With me through cold winter nights
And hot summer days

My love for you will
Outlast autumn's falling leaves
and greet Spring's blossoms

With you I remain
Always, ever faithful, Yours
Loving you the same.

Preference List: Spring, Winter, Autumn, Summer

Ruriska entry
CELEBRATE THE WHOLE YEAR ROUND!!

Entry:

I sprung,
with the spring,
like a new bud,
from the soil

but wilted,
in the summer,
hunched away,
from the sun

then delighted,
at the autumn,
while I napped,
in the leaves

now farewell,
for the winter,
as I expire,
from the chill

Preference List: Spring, Autumn

Dovaxy entry
CELEBRATE THE WHOLE YEAR ROUND!!

Entry: The last leaf falls floating to the ground,
Joining the mussed pile of its kin,
The young gather and jump around,
With joyful mirth and great big grins.

Soon soft flakes too fall from the sky above,
The world is cold and harsh,
Covered, white, seemingly void of,
life with the stillness, quiet on the marsh.

But soon droplets fall lightly from the cloud,
Wash away the cold, bringing color, life,
Joyful creatures form a crowd,
A joyous time free from strife.

Now there's nothing falling instead there's only heat,
It's time to seek out shade,
Find cover and retreat,
But nightfall brings relief to this quiet glade.

The last leaf falls floating to the ground,
The cycle starts anew simple yet profound.

Preference List: Winter, Spring

Suishii entry
CELEBRATE THE WHOLE YEAR ROUND!!

Entry:

Summer brings a fire.
An ember stoked each morning to burn
Slowly, slowly until the ash of dusk.

Autumn brings a wind.
A chill creeping in, kindling,
And then extinguishing the forest.

Winter brings a calm.
Silent and brilliant are the days,
And long, long are the nights.

Spring brings a thaw.
A slow procession of new life
To begin, to struggle, and finally to end.

Preference List: Spring, winter, autumn, summer.

FrostyPeaches entry
CELEBRATE THE WHOLE YEAR ROUND!!

Entry:
I remember meeting you as a young bud on a branch since birth, beautiful and green.
You have then slowly turned to a reddish orange when the air became humid and hot.
The days seem shorter now, don't you think? Not many held on strong and long, like you.
The temperature just slipped below zero. Snowflakes keep falling from the sky.
It's alright, just let go; the cold winter is not meant for you and your dry crunchy body.
I'll meet you again, perhaps in your next life, as another new leaf in Spring once more.

Preference List: Spring, winter, autumn, summer

Starrydance entry
CELEBRATE THE WHOLE YEAR ROUND!!

Entry:

Green awakens and embraces
Sunlight kisses upturned faces
The cold retreats unto its bed
As the long days race ahead

Flowers bloom and leaves unfurl
Sweet babies by their mothers curl
Wild Growth takes over fen and glade
The birds and the bees have it made!

Preference List: Spring, Winter, Autumn, Summer

In May of 2009, Matope was infested with the gone buggy event. The theme of this event was all things creepy crawly, from friendly ladybugs and caterpillars to wicked-looking spiders. Now this event is being revisited with some exciting new takes by and be blue on these same themes!

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

These beetles have found their way into every nook and cranny of Matope on Gaia, and it's up to you to find them all before they take a big bite out of the shop!

All you need to do to participate in this free raffle is to go a-hunting for beetles! Twelve of them have been hidden around Matope, both in the forums and in the guild. Don't go digging too far, though; they'll only be found in posts by the mule or staff, and no farther than the first page of any subforum in the guild!

Once you've found a beetle, simply complete the task attached to it to claim your ticket. Each beetle can be claimed by as many people as find it, so please don't share your findings with other users!

As a reminder, please make sure to remove any task instructions from the code before posting -- only post your answer to the task, and not any information that could let others know what to do. Make them find these bugs on their own!

Note: Entries for this event do not count toward the Morrigan.

This event runs from August 10th to August 17th.

In June of 2010, the shop went big celebrating the fabulous Periodic Table, and the elements that make up the universe with the elemental event. This event dove into a big chunk of the table of elements, but left some of them unexplored. Now the remainder are being revisited with some exciting new takes by and be blue!

Pick your element, research it, figure out what represents it, and get ready to have some fun!

To win one of the kin above, all you have to do is pick a element from the Periodic Table and then head over to gaia's very own Avatar Builder to create an avatar inspired by your favorite element! It can be any element you'd like; it doesn't have to be one of the four represented above. If you'd like to add some details about why you designed your avatar the way you did, feel free to do that as well!

Once you've made your avatar please screencap and upload it to an image hosting site. We suggest imgur; photobucket is absolutely not permitted. Then use the following form to submit.

This event runs from August 12th to August 18th.

Element: Mercury
Link to Avatar: User Image
Other info: Mercury was used by felt hat makers, giving rise to the term 'mad as a hatter' but is an actual medical condition known as Erethism, a disorder caused by mercury poisoning. Also Mercury is used in fluorescent lighting (hence the neon strips in the avatar's hands). The fish represent the bioaccumulation of mercury in fish, which can then enter the human food chain and lead to poisoning.

Element: Arsenic
Link to Avatar: User Image
Other info: Arsenic is grey when found in nature, but yellow in combination with orpiment (with yellow/gold-colored in its etymology) and realgar. Common sources of natural arsenic poisoning are ground water, but it grew to be a popular poisoning method for royalty up until the Marsh Test (developed in 1836) became an easy method to test for its presence. Arsenic poisoning damages the internal organs, with symptoms being discoloration of the nails and hyper pigmentation. Obviously, her drink doesn't have any arsenic in it, as it can't be easily tasted or detected. Don't you want to share some?

SCIENCE IS FUN!

Element: Palladium
Link to Avatar: User Image
Other info: OK so Wiki tells me Palladium is named after Pallas which is an epithet for Athena, because she was apparently Athena's foster sister that she accidentally murdered with a spear through the chest (symbolised by the dripping gold heart), and then long statue story short Athena is also known as Pallas Athena. So Athena and (the slaying of) Pallas imagery while maintaining the spiked, silvery look of the actual element itself.

It kinda ran away with me.
