Art & Concept Guidelines
All artwork must be original
AI-generated art may not be bought or sold on Gaia Online
Fan-based shops are permitted
No shops may use inappropriate art
General concepts are not considered exclusive
General fan-based concepts and related species are also not considered exclusive
Plagiarism is not tolerated
All artwork must be original
- You need to draw your own artwork, or work out a deal with an artist to work with you to create original art.
You may not use artwork that you don't have the rights to in any way.
Copying/tracing/eyeballing of ANYTHING that belongs to someone else - be it a Gaia pet, a photograph, a piece of artwork, and so on - is also not allowed.
AI-generated art may not be bought or sold on Gaia Online
- Artists must sell work that is their original creation. While we recognize that effort goes into the creation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) art, the finished product has been created by extensively using aids and resources and is not fully the artist's own work. Gaians may not buy or sell AI art for Gaia items or currency or for RLC in any of Gaia's forums.
Should you wish to provide free AI art to other Gaians for fun or practice, you are welcome to do so in the Art Freebies or Chatterbox forums. You may not charge or request or accept "tips" for this artwork.
If you find or suspect you have found a user selling AI art, please report the relevant threads or posts together with any other supporting evidence.
Fan-based shops are permitted
- It's perfectly okay to run a shop based on and using characters from a pre-existing commercial work - like Pokemon, Harry Potter, Final Fantasy, and so on. However, just as in the rules above, you cannot copy or trace official art - you MUST create your own poses and artwork.
No shops may use inappropriate art
- No portrayal of extreme gore
No pornographic nudity for humanoid pets (no nudity with genitalia, pubic hair, or nipples on female breasts)
No overt genitalia on any pets, and so on.
General concepts are not considered exclusive
- This applies to both general species (i.e. dragons, horses, cats, foxes, etc.) and basic ideas (i.e. myths reborn, kitsune of Japan, children who ride dragons, etc.).
Stories that are in the public domain, such as myths and fairy-tales, or historical events, are also considered to be general concepts.
General fan-based concepts and related species are also not considered exclusive
- This means there can be more than one Pokemon shop, multiple Harry Potter shops, lots of Final Fantasy shops, and so on.
Plagiarism is not tolerated
- Even though broad and fan concepts are not something exclusive, there is no excuse whatsoever for stealing content wholesale from another shop.

Rules of Shop and Pet Management
All artwork must be original
The following guidelines apply to staff participation
Purchasing a pet is considered to be a contract
Blacklists are permissible
In Mini Shops, this agreement is generally that if you pay the creator for a graphic, you have the right to use it--unedited--for its intended purpose only, and may not claim ownership.
If no other agreement is posted, the creator is protected by the terms of the preceding agreement.
The following guidelines apply to staff participation
- Artists/colorists may not win pets that they, themselves, have created.
Shop staff may not judge any games and/or contests that they are participating in.
- For Example
- Roleplay Contests
Avatar Contest
Design Contests
Etc.
Shop staff may not automatically reserve slots for themselves.
- For Example
- Colourist opens up 3 breeding spots.
Colourist may not reserve a spot for themselves, reducing the available slots to 2.
However, another user may reserve a spot with a pairing that includes a pet Colourist owns.
Shop staff may purchase customs and breedings from other staff members.
Shop staff may participate in user-run events for pets that those users have received.
- For Example
- A user pair orders a breeding.
The user/s receive 5 offspring from the breeding.
Each user keeps 1 offspring and decides to give out the remaining 3 via a game.
As this game is being run by a user, rather than as an official staff event or game, staff involved in the creation of this pet may participate for a chance to win it.
Shop staff may participate in randomising/dice games they've created pets for, but may not win the pets they created.
- As a reminder, all randomising/dice rolling must be done on Gaia with Gaia's randomising/dice system.
Purchasing a pet is considered to be a contract
- You are required to provide the pet owner with pet images/artwork as promised at the time the pet was acquired.
The rules a pet was originally purchased under serve as a contract as well; you may not change the terms of an already owned pet.
- For example, if someone buys a pet and the rules say roleplay is not required, it is NOT PERMITTED for the shopowner to change the rules three months later and say that roleplay is now required in order for the petowner to keep their pet. It IS okay for the shopowner to change the rules for any future owners from that time, but those owners who had purchased before the new rules came into effect must not be bound by them.
Blacklists are permissible
- You may not be abusive with blacklists
- Blacklist: [Person] is not allowed, for art theft.
- Blacklist: [Person] is not allowed because they are a damn whore.
If you choose to blacklist a user, you must still complete the art they've paid for. If their pet is not finished growing, you must still provide all stages of the pet as per your contract, or give the user a full refund. Not doing so is considered scamming and will be treated as such. This includes pets that were obtained without the exchange of gold, you must return the equivalent value in gold or complete the pet.
The only exception to the refund rule is for pets with an activity or roleplay requirement stated clearly at the time of the pet's purchase. Activity requirements are considered part of the contract made when purchasing a pet, and it must be held up on the buyer's end as well. If the buyer does not fulfill that requirement, the pet may be removed with the mediation of a Breedables moderator. So if you are a shop owner and wish to remove a pet using this rule, you must contact a Breedables mod to assist you and make sure the rules are being properly followed.
In Mini Shops, this agreement is generally that if you pay the creator for a graphic, you have the right to use it--unedited--for its intended purpose only, and may not claim ownership.

Report Hacking, Scamming or Abuse & Harassment?
The Hacking, Scamming and Abuse or Harassment report forms can be found at the bottom of the forum index. When submitting a report, ensure that you fill out all fields and include as much relevant information as possible.
- Report A Hacking
Use this form to report a Hacking. Hacking, on Gaia Online, refers to the unauthorized access of an account by someone other than the account owner. In most typical hacking cases, an unauthorized person enters an account which does not belong to him or her and takes items or gold from the account, often changing the account information so that the original owner can no longer access his or her account.
Report A Scamming
Use this form to report a Scamming. Scamming is when another member of Gaia takes your gold or items, or tries to take your gold or items, by making false promises of giving you rare items, get-rich-quick schemes, or by any other deceptive means. Scamming generally involves a situation in which two members of Gaia make an arrangement to trade gold, items, or a Gaia approved service (e.g. avatar art commission) with each other and then one of the parties involved in the arrangement fails to live up to his or her promise of an exchange.
Report Abuse or Harassment
Use this form to report ongoing Abuse or Harassment. If you are reporting harassment or abuse that is occurring directly in a thread, please use the "Report This Post" button instead.
