14 years ago, Gaia was built with the sole intention of creating an anime gaming community, with no solid plans for how to sustain our own efforts. Gaia couldn't cover it's bandwidth cost through advertising alone, and we were planning to shut down the website on October of 2004 as credit card bills were stacking up in an alarming rate.
But everything changed before we reached the deadline, when the Gaia community offered to donate to support our cause. That's when we came up with the idea of the first Donation Item. It was the Angelic Halo - to let all supporters know that they were the angels who helped keep Gaia alive. There wouldn’t be a Gaia today if it wasn't for all of you who supported us.
Eventually, those who did not know the story of the Donation Item were confused as to why we were asking for donations. That's when Donation Items were renamed to Monthly Collectibles. Since then, Gaia has greatly expanded our variety of offerings to include a wide array of creative products. But the concept remains the same: Gaia is around because of all Gaians who stood up and supported Gaia Online.
Since then, we had provided much more fancy, interactive, and elaborate premium items to reward the Gaia supporters. At a time where Gaia supporters expect new content and quality from us, we felt that the Monthly Collectible has now been sufficiently replaced by the new generation of premium items. While we are close to releasing brand new ideas on the site, it is time for us to let go some of our oldest offerings, and make room for what's new.
As of March 2017, we will no longer be selling Monthly Collectibles in their current incarnation - but they’re not going away forever! We’ll be bringing them back in a new exciting way very soon, and we’re super excited about it. So stay tuned for more news to come!
