It's very easy to see if you've been blocked by someone on gaia, and this has become a problem.
You can see numerous threads, particularly in Chatterbox of butthurt people saying they've been blocked by someone. How do they know this? Well:

When I blocked my mule on purpose to see what it looks like to be blocked, this is what happened:

1. I logged onto my mule (who has been blocked by my main account)
2. I click to see my main accounts' profile
3. A text appears saying "You are not allowed to view this profile!" or something like that.

Wouldn't it be better if the message said "This profile is not available to the public", just like it does when someone makes their profile hidden?

That way, NO ONE can know if someone blocked them?


Thoughts? (hope I'm making any sense)

Other problems regarding blocking: when you go to the "my friends" page and search for a username,
(say if someone is curious about if someone blocked them or not)

i completely agree. it's pretty easy to figure out when you've been blocked, especially because gaia will display a "topics blocked" description at the bottom of forums. i've personally adblocked it cos i found it kinda pointless lol but it shouldn't really be there in the first place if you ask me!

it defeats the purpose of blocking people if they can figure it out with ease, so i think to make it as subtle as possible would be wise. people will figure it out eventually, but why make it just a hop skip and a jump, yanno? ninja

I agree. I mean people get harassed on Gaia all the time and when they block people, you don't want them to know about it so they can create a mule and go at it again.

I agree. People get really pissy when they find out they've been blocked and in some cases it does encourage trolling and butthurt threads.

And honestly, when I block/am blocked by someone, I want them to be out of sight, out of mind. Having those glaring "Topics Blocked: _" and "You are not allowed to view this profile!" messages prevent that.

It'd be cool if we could just toggle those messages on and off, or get rid of them altogether.

I've been able to tell I've been blocked because someone will quote me, Gaia will notify me of that quote, and when I click on the thread link, either the post isn't there or the forum message says "yeah you're not supposed to be here~". Which is fine.

I don't think Gaia needs to change anything. People just need to get over themselves. And the topics blocked used to show you what threads you were blocked from once upon a time. It's fine as it is as a curiosity.

Having a private profile though, shows a different message when clicking than when you've been blocked by someone - THAT'S WHAT ANNOYS ME. It shouldn't be saying "you are not ALLOWEDDDDD to view this profile", excuse me but that's bad planning right there! Mods/admins need to fix it asap in my opinion.

I know, they have no life when all they do is to desperately go and see who blocked them or not. And namedrop (I've lost count of how many threads I've reported calling people out who have blocked them) in forums no less.

I just did it to see HOW they figure out that someone has blocked them. Because, personally I have a stalker here on gaia- yes- a STALKER. Since I have blocked them I can't see, but on my mule I see posts everywhere from that one person I blocked, being butthurt/crying about "dooei blocked me boohoo" and etc.

If the message was simply just "this profile is not available to the public", then the person would just have assumed it was private TO.EVERY.ONE. And not blocked SPECIFICALLY for that person

That means it's technically still on the list but you can't see it. They need to have a way to let you remove those or remove them automatically. It was so long ago I don't even remember who it was that blocked me. They probably aren't even on Gaia anymore.

Edit: This might also be how they figured out since if they subscribed to your threads they became invisible and a message showed in their subscribed list with the number of blocked threads.

I never realized that this also resulted in a blocked topic. I still have subscribed threads from 2007 so that may be the cause of my blocked topics as well. It's hard to tell.

I've never agreed with the blocking policies on Gaia. If I've blocked someone, I dont want a huge damn banner saying I blocked them in the forums/in my profile. I don't want to see them in any form anywhere, and I don't want them to see me.

The only case that hurts is when prolific people who make guides and informative threads block people from viewing them.

Well, because mules are a thing, you actually kind of need to be able to find out if you're blocked by someone. Otherwise, you might interact with them in the future on a mule, and find yourself in hot water for avoiding the block that you didn't know existed. I have five accounts--it's very uncommon for a single person to have blocked all of them. But if I know someone has me blocked on one account, I honor their wishes by staying out of their threads and their store, and avoid responding to their posts, with all of my accounts.

It would be nice to be able to turn off the blocked threads notice at the bottom of the page if it bothers you, though, and it would be really great if you could unsubscribe from blocked threads.
