Oh wow, I never expected this to happen. I'm already wondering what else they might do now...I'm with SA and Aldo on this, this is really denting their credibility, I just hope this will be the only thing that they do, and I'd be even happier if it was removed all together. neutral

Why? If people opt to use it it doesn't have any effect on your interaction with the website.

The filter dosen't effect me, I never said it did. But it's just precedent this is setting. They don't have to stay with their word anymore. They lied about the filter, anything else could be next, it's a dangerous precedent their setting here. confused

That doesn't matter. As I've said earlier Swearing is a part of Gaia. If you do not have the maturity to deal with that profanity you shouldn't be here. This site is not supposed to be for children, and with the implimentation of this filter it's starting to seem that the admins are catering to a younger crowd.

besides that, again, they lied to us by putting this filter in. that's the major issue, they've damaged their credibility with this little feature. The admins might as well just change Gaia's rating to [G]

With this filter, Gaia is trying to cater to a younger crowd. Scratch that. Gaia has been catering to a younger crowd. It all started when fishing was implimented. I think that a [G] rating is in our near future. Nothing left to do but protest and prepare.

The funny thing is there's sooo much stuff on this website that goes way beyond bad language. Like someone said in the Q&A recently on the subject of a mother wanting to screen her kid's posts --
Quote:
if i had a twelve year old, i would not allow them onto this site.

I mean with all the trolls, flaming, shock pics, porn posts... A language filter won't make much of a difference when you're seeing tub girl-esque garbage. Granted it's not admin sanctioned but it's still here. A lot more would need to be done before this site was actually "kid friendly".

*and leave, you mean. D: I ain't gonna show up on some kiddy-site.

D: If it comes to that, then yes. Most of us will leave.
What the phuck? gonk

PG-13, dammit.

*wonders if either of those will be blocked out* ninja *doubts it*

The FMIs are gonna need another update, eh? xp
I have to agree with Silver Archangel and Aldo on the credibility of the admins now. Also, the site is suppose to be PG-13 meaning cussing is allowed and you should expect to see it. To me this filter whether you can choose the setting you wish is taking away from what Gaia is supposed to be.

My feedback on the filter is that its a bad idea and even set on the highest setting it doesnt do much. To me this is just another one of those updates we can all live without. neutral

And a mod explaining why they had to change it. xp
Even though alot of users are between 13-16 on one of the Gaia Polls I saw, there are also many people over 18 (or was it 21?)....

Which makes me think... Turning this into a rated [G] site... would lose that crowd, and most of the crowd from the teenager section....

Would they still do that? And start catching kids below... 10?

Right now to me it seems to be that way. The said they would not release a word filter but they did. Just because a bunch of illiterate kids went whinning about the cussing.

Why do people have to be such big drama queens about everything? gonk

There is a "filtering off" option, ne? Just keep it that way and move on.

Hopefully this filter will help a number of people who feel they need it, and those who do not need it can go around minding their own bussiness and cursing to their hearts content.

What can possibly be wrong with that? confused

Vicious Warlord

there is nothing wrong with the filter, other than that they broke a promise by doing so.

I think it might help a lot if we stopped being idealists about Gaia and start seeing it as the company it is.
There are a lot of economic interests at stake, and adults here are a minority of the population. (When I saw the percentage of people my age in Lanzer's poll, my heart sank... I guess my age group is like 8% of the population crying ).

It is only natural that the site caters to their majority's needs. Keep in mind that the PG-13 category is a lot more serious than what we give it credit for.
Parents counting on that, can (-and if they are in the US, will-) take legal action against this company if they feel their kids are interacting in an environment that doesn't comply with it.

The Admins are just "covering their backs". With that kind of feature, they take off themselves part of the responsibility.
Personally, I think that the Word Filter is a FAILURE. It doesn't totally filter words out and you can guess what word it is.

*shrugs* The filter doesn't filter much, though.

instead of s**t getting filtered to ****, s**t gets filtered to sh*t.

Who the hell ain't going to be able to figure out that one? confused
