_as of yet, i haven't seen anyone specifically comment on that issue.

What topic do you mean? I'm referring to the entire feature, and all the complaining about it.

_no one's really complaining about the word filter itself. most people are angered about it's presence plus the admin's word that their wouldn't be one.

That's what I meant. Forgive me for not being specific enough.

B) It's not dumming it down. It's called filtering profanity. Sure, profanity is freedom of speech, yadda yadda, but there's a limit. Not all users appriciate seeing swear words in front of them 24/7.
Refer to my post in which I declare that it should be our duty to remove this goddamn social engineering process from the raising of future generations.

Quote:
C) What's wrong with children? Shouldn't they be able to enjoy a clean Gaia as well? Just because they're younger and are forbidden to swear, does that make them lower?
No, I think the entire concept of "swear words" as a whole is completely ******** retarded (though they do make good emphasis, sound good in conversation, and are a very good way of drawing the attention of people I probably want to antagonize). I think that this only encourages today's trend of training children to be total ******** pussies so that if by some miracle they do get out of school in one piece and survive the real world they'll ******** up our own lives worse (thank YOU, goddamn politicians, lobbyists, and rabid Christian groups) and corrupt the further generation till the entire human race finds itself in an evolutionary cesspool from which it cannot escape.

Hoo, boy. I sure let myself go there. Aaaaaaaanyway. The fact of the matter is, I oppose BY PRINCIPLE to word filters.
I am twenty-two years old. I am not part of a "younger" or "less mature" crowd by any means. I appreciate the admins' attempt to cater, OPTIONALLY, to a more conservative crowd.

Perhaps those of you claiming they "lied" to us are misinterpreting their original remarks. You seem to be disregarding a few key points:
1. A real word filter would either disallow swear words (by telling you to change your language and not allowing the post until you do) or automatically blank them out. For everyone. Edit: See also -- NEOPETS.
2. This "filter" is an optional feature, and not one that automatically turns on. Meaning, it does not affect you UNLESS YOU WANT IT TO.

Could it be (shocker!) that Lanzer & Co. meant they would never implement the first kind of filter? Allowing those of us who don't care for the language to screen it somewhat, as was mentioned earlier, does not affect your experience on Gaia; it just allows some of us to customize our own experience better, the same as sorting the chattier forums apart from the purely-business or purely-feedback forums.

I do not think that my distaste for certain words makes me immature. I also don't think the admins have done anything they said they wouldn't -- just that some of you are misinterpreting their original meaning.
Adressing your point one, I don't think that's the case here considering the FMI regarding the issue has been deleted.

Probably because (as seen in this topic) the wording is widely open to misinterpretation. I believe their promise and intention was that never would their users be forced to conform to a "clean" standard. They haven't gone back on that. They are not forcing anyone.
That's a possibility, and has been suggested before. Even if that's the case, I feel that the FMIs should have been, and need to be more specific for future references.

Agreed.

I take back what I said yesterday, Gaia IS becoming neopets and I'm appauled.
I think its a little too late to quote this, but with the word filter, I suppose that it is, sadly and horrifingly, becomming neopets. And I thought I'd seen the last of them when I quit neopets. . They have stupid rules on neopets. .
People seem to be a little too forward with both choice of words and interpretation. Perhaps by both sides of the 'argument' admins and users alike. Just because at the time it is said a feature is not a good idea - does not mean it is not a good idea later on. For what ever reason the idea was revisited and decided in favour of trying at this time which is different to the time before. Things change over time as people change their minds. Stating that a feature will never happen is likely a bit too strong, so is believing it. You need to take a look at the current issues around you before you think that a feature will remain as 'never implemented.'

My advice in future is to interpret all features as not a good idea at the time being of denial, future pending.

eek Where!
Right-o. I don't see what the big deal is about this. I agree with Kimini. I think all the people who said the admins went back on their word, misinterpreted. The words "I promise..." or "I swear..." were never used. Therefore, it cannot be said that they went back on their word. I also agree with [RunningWolf]. They said they wouldn't implement it. But that was then. This is now. The idea became better for them, for some reason. Get over it, and get over yourselves. It's really not a big deal. Either use it, or don't. It does not, repeat does not, affect you if you don't use it. Let people be sensitive. When they get out of the Bible Belt and into the real world, their sensibilities will be shot. Let them believe that the world is just fine and dandy, for now. It'll change eventually.

And that's why there are wars in the world, because of the lack of ' total ******** pussies' mad [/spam]
