The site definitely hasn't matured. Lots of people moved on. I'm on Aywas and Recolor, but both those communities are pretty awful (both in regards to how they speak to / about cishets, and what the writers are like). All in all, Gaia is a s**t hole, but it's still better than everywhere else I've found.
Everyone is generally really rude and unpleasant now, too?? The request threads in the AF more often than not state what kind of art they want / expect and that's just insane to me.

Aywas is like 99% customization -- primarily a pet site, but with human avatars, and you can create your own clothing and pets etc. The users set up site events. Recolor is by the guy who does tektek. The clothes and avis are cute, but you know. People.
I haven't heard of Eternal Skies but I will keep an eye out!!
