Welcome to Gaia! ::

Ayamae Akahana

XD I can't take prednisone. They put me on that stuff when I had a severe allergic reaction to a shirt last year, and oh my god the moodswings. My sister was pissing me off, and she was holding a fork, and I ripped it out of her hand and busted all the prongs on the table. I mean, I was all HULK SMASH!!! I was either HULK SMASH or NO ONE LOVES ME I'M GOING TO GO DIE. XD

Also, my god, if I had the space for a natural habitat. Yubby would have her own private beach and forest. Complete with a mini palm tree, and live grass, swear to god. >.< As it stands, limited space = no natural habitat. ;;~;; Someone posted a pic of their natural habitat a few months ago, and I about drooled. Best part? Their hamster was peeing in the sand, so they just had to scoop that little bit of sand out. ;;~;; No more nasty pee spot for me to dish soap out every time I change the stupid tank!

Haha, prednisone just has all sorts of nice side effects eh? xD

I wonder how I would go about making one. I'd of course do it in a tank, or a bin. I actually don't mind tanks I just dont' like cleaning them. I think too that my biggest thing about a natural habitat is cleaning the poop/pee. I mean, they go quite a bit when you think about it xD And some of i ti'm sure would get under dirt/sand/in water. Auugh. nasty. I like my carefresh for ease. xD Toss it all out after the week is up and no worries. But i do like the look of natural habitats. I think i'd want to include a wheel though even though there usually isn't one. I really think its vital to their exercise.

Sorry they're enormous, but these are the best I got biggrin

Definitely looks like a Syrian now that I get more views. xD

Actually reminds me of a late hamster I had, patch.

By pet store terms, we'd mark that one down as a Fancy Golden.

He's way too adorable for his own good by the way. xDD

I know, he's super nice, too. I bought him from a good pet store, and he had no biting or people problems ever heart I'll be really sad when he goes though, I read that they only live 2-3 years and he's nearing 3 years sad

Honestly it isn't exactly uncommon for them to live as long as 4 years, I have customers who've said theirs were even 5 years before passing. I know some customers may exaggerate though, but still. It's hopeful right? xD

Awwww <3 He's adorable! But I bet their bite hurts like hell o.o If they have temperament like Syrians that is. xD

they are anti social with their own kind like syrians.... they keep to their own little territories and males only venture in long enough to mate and then he needs to get the hell out.

I have seen thigns on you tube of them as pets in Europe... but yeah... they aren't very popular pets and though ghty aren't endangered they are wiped out of some areas of their ranges and they want to re-introduce them to the areas... though they are concidered pests... I wouldn't mind helping with re-introductions or just getting some into the US and trying to breed them to being a bit kinder so they could be nice pets... though I doubt anyone would give them cages that would be good for them. Borrowing g-pigs.... so that is a lot of space.....

Considering people can't seem to give enough space to guinea pigs, I could see it being a total fiasco for the species as a pet.

I mean as is, hamsters in general need enough bedding to burrow and nest. People come in to the shop all the time and brag about how they save so much money by giving the hamster maybe an inch of bedding. Bah. =/ Honestly too at the size of a guinea pig, I doubt even I could give enough space to one. xD I mean not right now. I'd want like...2 pet rooms. Just dedicate a room to one of those. xD

But, if they're nice like guinea pigs, and do NOT bite like Syrians have a nasty habit of doing until they get to know you...they wouldn't be too bad. =)

Do any of them ever even filter into the US for pets? -scours the exotic pet auction list here for last time's animals sold-

I think US still has a ban on importing exotic rodents... at least that is why you can't get Jerboas in the US (not illigal to own them anymore but you can't import them.... )

Well there's always the Kangaroo Mouse, native the US. Not illegal to own unless it's native to your state of course. But, they're the next best thing to a Jerboa xD
Click

Actually didn't know about the ban on important exotic rodents. Though I can understand why it's done.

So cute!!!! XD

I found something about it when I was looking up Jerboas last year or something, and I think it had to do with the monkey pox scare that came through with all the prairie dogs that got imported or what not. (I remember when my cousin couldn't take her's to a vet because no one wanted to risk monkey pox... even though the vet had known it since it was a pup -_- at least gave my cousin medicine when she asked for it though.)

Haha isn't it though? I guess they don't exactly survive long in the wild because they're so friendly and curious they come right up to people! But...people...think they're pests. .-. A lot of people just find them in their basement and then keep them as pets. xD

Oh blah. There's always some scare going around. I guess it's good we DO regulate so heavily to protect ourselves from these things buuuut. still. xD As long as we aren't gonna be zombies i'm good.

may have to look into those guys since i'm pretty sure i could own one in Michigan... would still like double and triple check though smile

And yeah I'm good as long as we aren't zombies either. I think I may make a random thread about Toxoplasmosis and (what ever parasite dogs cna pass on) cause i find them interesting and would love to know how people deal with making sure to keep their dogs free of the parasite and what not (not sure if the normal wormers take care of the parasites...

Hmm...isn't that also something cats can pass on?
What is it...there's something that women can get, that I think is a parasite, that if a woman messes with cat fesces during pregnancy or any period before pregnancy and it's existing in their body it causes birth defects. Learned it like..5 or 6 years ago in parenting-child development class, maybe longer now, so I can't remember what it is. xD

Toxoplasmosis is the one that cats can pass on to humans. And really it isn't dangerous to us/affect healthy people and is much like mono/a cold that after a while just fades.... Imuno compramised people are affected badly from it for obvious reasons. Then Pregos can have issues if they get infected during the first trimester normally it results in abortions and then 2nd and 3rd ends with defects, still births, really bad disorders.

It can also be passed on by infected rodents, if they are eaten raw/under cooked. This is a parasite that started in Africa with one of the African rodents and thus people/cats would eat the rodents and all that, but the parasite does really well in almost all mammals.

There are tests that can be done on cats to see if they are carriers and there are apparently medicine for cats to get it out of their systems.

And there is one that dogs can carry that have some bad side effects, though it is rare in the US but Places that have high sheep concentrations seem to have more out brakes. Can't think of the name... I have been learning about both from class mates, who have been researching them. I'm researching a different parasite.
So guys:

I've had...just...the worst time with my breeding lately. My God. You can only time things so much and they work though you know?

First problem:
Crunchy and Munchy were producing my "gorgeous well tempered" babies. They both have perfect coat coloring though one parent has red eyes. They produced Black&White Dalmatian babies with black eyes and then a nice light tan and white but with red eyes. I had them...just absolutely perfectly planned out. There was no messing with my system >=x But there was. xD I was going to make their official last litter, new breeders. Their last litter was 2 pure white hamsters with red eyes, and 2 black and white hamsters. The REW passed away, they didn't develop right I would have had to cull them if they survived. The B&W were them promptly eaten by their mother after the REW passed on. =/ No more litters were produced after this litter, and i'm stating her/him as Sterile now.

So I decided to search for some B&W Hamsters with decent temperament that can be worked through and good coloring.

In the meantime, b***h Hamster and Ewok my other breeding set that I was going to be keeping their babies for breeding as well to be bred with Crunchy and Munchy's, were doing all fine and dandy until like 2 nights ago. =/ She had a litter of 4, which her original litter sizes were about 7, so I know she's slowing down in her age. Anyhow babies had just gotten pigment and started their peach fuzz, but 2 nights ago I walked in to see one baby's severed head, one baby's butt eaten, and 2 babies just plain dead. =/ I assume they just died in general and b***h Hamster had a feast. So i'm going to let her have another litter if she can, and then retire her and Ewok.

Now my Boss and I have been on this search for nice colored Campbells. It's hard to find, really hard to find. We called up both of our suppliers, I checked all the pet shops within 2-3 hours, and even attempted to get ahold of the breeder my sister in law got these from. (Would have been ideal)
Finally one of our suppliers calls us with hamsters that are campbells, and they're black&white dalmatian. They're suppose to come in today...but that's only if the packers are competent enough to read the orders to pack those specific ones.

So hoping for these hamsters. They're coming in young so I have time to figure out if they're breeding worthy before breeding them.

Well that might just be what i'm thinking of, then. It's been so damn long since i've been in that class. xD

So with this then I mean, does it STAY with you as a human or do you have to get rid of it by medicine or will it go away on it's own? And then for cats...I bet that's a costly test right? Is it even worth it? I guess it'd be easy to be infected, since a cat could just technically scratch you right? Dirty little claws. xD

Oh the animals we love causing us so much problems.

It is an oral consumption thing... so hands to mouth thing. so a scratch shouldn't get you infected... but you could get Cat scratch fever from a scratch or bite, or other little nasties if you don't clean it XD

From the sounds of it, it just kind of leaves your body on it's own... cause in healthy people it normally goes undetected and i think it was close to 60+% of the US has been infested at one point or another XD

and I'm sure that since we can get it by messing with the litter box, you would think if they did a stool sample they could see if there were cysts/eggs in the poo. <.< I'm sure treating it probably isn't cheep though.

Since it can get passed cat to cat, it is safe to assume cats at shelters are all carriers, any outdoor cat would be a carrier possibly, the only ones that would be clear would be an indoor cat you had from birth and was sure that they were never around any other cat and was only fed a strict commercial/premade food diet.
