You can have 10 villagers total (one is from a campsite you have to build). You can't choose your villagers except for the camping one. However if you visit friend's towns and talk to particular villagers in their town enough, if that villager decides to move then they will sometimes move to your town (if you have space for them). Also if you talk to a friend's villager who is packed up ready to move you can ask them to move to your town too. heart
