ibuprofen

headaches come in waves
heavier and harder than
the blows to my pride,

my spleen, and my face-
almost. my stomach rolls with
the punches. i try

leaving everything
behind me (what goes on there
stays there) except for

bruises and heartache-
the purple blues fade but the
unreal memories

he jumps on the bed-
“I'm going to kill myself”
nail pressed to his vein,

he enunciates.
he's ten, he's ten, he's ten he's
just beyond my reach

and he doesn't feel
safe, i do not feel safe, he
doesn't know, i don't

know. i don't. i cope,
i pray to some(no)one. my
headaches come in waves.
