Hi, sorry i haven't been on for a long time, so these topics im bringing up may well be old, but:

1) to anyone who knows, is it true that Brigham Young and a guy called Brother Law were completely against polygamy at the beginning?

2) just about the baptisms for the dead... would it be justifiable to say that if you are needed to be baptised before you can be sealed/married in the temple, would this mean that baptism for the dead could be justified as it paves a way for other things to be done?

just wondering.

1.) I don't know, Kiritsu could probably help you with that, I'll look it up.

2.) That's... pretty much the whole point of Baptism for the Dead. They also have all the other temple ceremonies for the dead.

3.) I just realized, your name, mremann, is Mr. E Mann. Mystery Man. Heh heh heh.

From my research,

1. No.

2. Again, that is pretty much the point for BftD. The problem with that comes around from the fact that the BoM clearly states that Baptism for the Dead is wrong. As does the bible.

3. Kind of slow today shee? Nah, just kidding. I didn't even bother looking at his name long enough to find that out.

3.) Yeah, I just kept wondering "How the hell do you pronounce that?"

Mrrreeehhmmannnnnnn?

Then I saw it.

Meeee?? sweatdrop

But no really. There is a Brother Law, and he was Joseph Smith's First Councelor for a long time. You are correct. Brother Law was completely against polygamy. In fact, when he discovered that Joseph Smith was practicing it, he was so outraged that he started that newspaper called the Nauvoo Expositor to expose Joseph's practices. Joseph Smith got mad about that and had the press destroyed after the first printing. His full name was William Law, btw.

". . .He felt that many of Smith's new teachings had corrupted the church and strongly rejected the doctrine of a plurality of wives and a plurality of Gods. He was released from his position in the First Presidency in January of 1844 and excommunicated in April of that same year. This, however, did not silence Mr. Law's complaints. In June of 1844, Law joined six other dissidents and published the Nauvoo Expositor, a newspaper that listed several objections regarding Joseph Smith's teachings and "ecclesiastical control over civil and business affairs."

As far as I recall in all the research I've done, and from what a quick preliminary search has failed to reveal, I think Brigham was always in support of Joseph Smith's revelation and practice of plural marriage. I do not recall him ever being [initially] opposed to it.

You will acknowledge of course, that Brigham Young became the primary proponent of polygamy when the church split. The Mormons who didn't go to Utah declined primarily because of Brigham Young's upholding Joseph's ideas of plural marriage, as well as the ideas of God being an exalted man.

Futurama! Futurama! Just kidding. If it isn't that. . . I don't know.
Hey all! I'm glad to meet so many other members of the church. I'm a member too.

Apprently, people still think that "Mormons" practice polygamy. Perhaps we should truly address ourselves as Saints/Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

I can't wait to talk more! whee I'm a Young Woman from Sydney! Who here has been to the temple?

If you were brought to this thread, it is through the Holy Spirit that you were brought here.
I can agree with that. The Holy Spirit brought us all here to bring Mormons the truth about their Religion. I totally agree. biggrin

That's another thing that bugs me about most of the Mormons I've met, if you aren't with them you're against them. Me, I have nothing against Mormons in general, but I would feel it was disrespectful to baptise me after I was dead. I'm hoping to be off in Valhalla at the time and really don't need someone ringing the spiritual phone from this side asking if I want to be Mormon. It's similar to why I don't want a Christian funeral. It just seems really strange though and a bit disrespectful to some of the dead people in question. (At least to me).

well, baptisms for the dead are for those that WANT to be baptised(i.e., didn't hear about the church when alive, died too young, didn't believe in anything till they died, etc.). Just because the dead get baptized doesn't mean much really if they don't believe in it. If they don't want to be, then nothing happens. If when they die, they realize everything and want to be, then it's done for them. Since for the most part you can't tell what a dead person wishes, it's done just in case. Like people like my parents. They don't want to believe in the church, ok....well, that doesn't mean I won't preform the baptisms after they die. If you don't get baptised, you CANNOT go to...we'll say heaven for the time being. So, it shows love, think of it that way. And without the "annoying" bugging people thing. If your dead, you won't notice it anyway. Especially if your not paying attention to things like that.
but ? doesnt the act of babtising them after they are dead and buried in THEIR religion constitute as being disrepectful, by baptising them as lds?

I think people who get baptised after they've died still get a choice, wether to be LDS or not. The thing about this church, is that we have a high emphasis on free agency. We are allowed to choose. We have the RIGHT to choose.

Would you have a problem being baptised as a Catholic after you die?

See? Different.
They still have a number of similaritys. It just appears that they used a different stone and the steeples are placed somewhat in the same areas, but the main buildings appear to have the exact same appearance. to me, anyway.
