Welcome to Gaia! ::

Okay, so I know very little about the Aes Denai and I'm curious to learn more.
I've tried googling numerous times, but I turn up nothing and have no clue on where to start when it comes to books and I know some of you like CuAnnan and Tea are really knowledgeable on the subject and I'd really appreciate it if you could enlighten me so I'm not talking out of my a**, especially when trying to inform someone else about it.
A while back I came in here, ignorantly claiming to be an Irish Celtic Recon and was promptly put in my place, but I'd like to know more about how it's closed and what not. Especially so I can help stop others from doing what I naively did.

Also, this might be a stupid question, but I'm rather... ignorant on the subject I guess, are there Celtic paths outside of Aes Denai?

Any and all help or source recommendations are highly appreciated.

What's a "relgion"? Does it go well with potato bread?

Yeah, thanks, I made a typo.
I get it and I fixed it.

Care to answer the questions asked now?

@Akhenaton of man:
Is it really?
I was fairly certain, and still am, that they're not at all related.
Not from what I've learned on it from the regulars on this board like Tea, Cu, Scorplett, etc.

Yep. Look at the linguistics for the title of the theology itself. It's a specific cult.

As for religious traditions of the Celts, you'll have to narrow it down a bit. P-Celt or Q-Celt?

I can't tell if you're trolling, lying or are simply ignorant. Could you point out which one so I can react appropriately?

Ah, thank you.
I had a feeling, but was/am totally clueless.

Again, forgive my ignorance but P-Celt or Q-Celt?

No worries. Cu's on his IMs. I'm poking him now.

Linguistic division between the Celts that helps narrow down the umbrella term so I can start pulling resources. Which Celts do you want to learn about?

Haha, all of the above?
But I suppose first and foremost the P-Celts as I know virtually nothing on them, whereas I have some very minimal knowledge of the Q-Celts.

Okay, so I know very little about the Aes Denai and I'm curious to learn more.

I am, as far as I am aware, the only one of us to openly have an internet presence. There's only a couple of score of us and, save from a certain ethic when it comes to the revival of our practices, we're (like most revivalist trads) not really all that codified.

I've tried googling numerous times, but I turn up nothing and have no clue on where to start when it comes to books

The Leabhar Gebhala Eirinn, the Annals of the Masters, the Books of Leinster and Ballymote.
You won't find a decent modernly published book. There are none. Almost all modern books published on paganism are done for the purposes of generating revenue for Llewwelyn, not for informing people about the things they think they're getting books on.

especially when trying to inform someone else about it.

Why would you be trying to do that? Genuine question.

If you are not a Gael, you have no place in our religion.
This isn't racism, it's not us saying you are less than us, just that you do not conform to the expectations our Gods have for their followers. Part of the expectations are your cultural identity. You cannot emulate it and expect it to be the same

Yes. There are many. Aes Denai is a linguistic contrivance. It's a declination of "Aos Dana" which is an Old Irish term the meaning of which varies depending on who you ask but is generally accepted to mean "the Gifted Ones". The contrived meaning is "those who would be the gifted ones" believing that, since the original practice died we should not attempt to recreate it or revive it but simple strive to.

Any and all help or source recommendations are highly appreciated.

If you want to actually study the sources, you're going to have to learn 4th Century Irish.
ISOS will provide you with screen shots that you can read.

I can point you to a wealth of academic resources, but if you want to learn how to honor the traditions within the culture, I'm afraid there are prerequisite qualifiers you need to have.
Where do you live?
What is your ancestry?
What access to cultural elements do you have?

You need to be able to contextually and with cultural appropriateness answer questions such as cé a bhfuil tú agus cé a bhfuil do mhuintir or do bhunadh?

Not sure how those questions are relevant to the bolded section.

Yeah, 4th century Irish would definitely be a problem as I've not mastered more than a handful of basic Gaeilge. English is sadly, a definite must.

As to why I'd be trying to inform someone else, they made ignorant claims that I once made and I'd like to try and inform them why they're in the wrong other than saying "Aes Denai is closed to anyone not a Gael as the gods are oathbound to them." Especially when they vaguely say they're a Celtic Pagan, I'd like to be able to give them some of the knowledge that I've seen you give out to others. Plus I'm just genuinely curious and fascinated.

@Scorplett:
Oh no, I learned my lesson a long time ago.
I have no desire to practice, just to learn and have the knowledge.

I'd like to know more about how it's closed and what not.
It's closed by oath.

Basically, the traditions of the Gael include wars, conquests and oaths that can be accurately described as treaties.

These treaties between the gods of the Gael and the Gael themselves are what closes the culture.
As I recall, some Wiccans do worship Celtic Gods, especially if that is part of their lineage. Now please. Is there some fiber in your body that is not 100% bratty and judgmental? Oh wait. You are a witch. Nevermind
Akhenaton of man
As I recall, some Wiccans do worship Celtic Gods,
The only Wica I know of who worship Celtic gods do so independently of Wica. That is to say- there are Wica who worship other gods as a separate practice.

You have to understand that British and Celtic are not synonyms- so even when Gardner addressed the deities as being of the Isles, he wasn't claiming them to be Celtic in nature.
