l 9 l = 9 because 9 is 9 units away from zero
l -9 l = 9 because -9 is 9 units away from zero in the number line

any algebraic things must be done inside the abs. values sign, before determining the distance it is away from zero

Ex:
l 9-4 l = l 5 l = 5
l -9-4 l = l -13 l = 13
