An excellent point.
3nodding However, I have to point out that in many cases, a person's health is out of their direct control. Stigmatizing those who are unhealthy, ostracizing them, guilting or shaming them, is absolutely not helpful. Someone who suffers from chronic pain thanks to fibromayalgia doesn't have any choice in whether or not they're in pain that day; it happens, all day, and it dramatically affects their ability to work, play, excersize, be with thier family and friends, sleep, everything. Saying "Boo! You're unhealthy! Do something about it!" doesn't help. Saying "Hey, I think you rock just the way you are" is much better.
As for the comment about obese people and anorexics, two very different issues. Obese people can be fat for many varied reasons; genetics, medication, injury or disability, a sedentary lifestyle, poor diet, low self-esteem, previous attempts at dieting and yo-yo-dieting. An obese person is not obese by choice; there are a wide variety of sizes and shapes in this world, and heavy people are one of them. The average person in North America is fat, but fat doesnt' automatically mean unhealthy. Please visit my thread:
Fat Acceptance and Health at EVERY size for more info on being fat and healthy, and liking you for who you are and not for what the scale might say someday.
An anorexic is anorexic because they are mentally ill and literally incapable of seeing the reality of their size. Anorexics DIE because they are too thin. Anorexics, maybe more than anyone, need their confidence and self-esteem aided by positive comments, but not about their size or looks. That just feeds their problem (no pun intended). If you suspect someone is anorexic or bulemic, please get them help.
