I think I get what Hero's getting at...but my brain's a bit fuzzy, and paragraphs are kicking my a** right now.
...So, correct me if I misunderstand, Hero, but you're saying in a nutshell that we shouldn't try to sugar-coat things if there is a genuine problem, yes?......I will make a quick...well, I'll try to make a quick point, if indeed I understood you correctly.
You make a good point that telling people "oh, it's okay" when they have a problem that isn't okay is not a good idea. That I agree with--to a point, anyway. I think what Starlurk is trying to further with this is to help people who are constantly ridiculed for whatever reason know that they do indeed have redeeming qualities.
Something like that...but like I said, I'm not sure I'm understanding everything correctly. >.>
Also unfortunate is that I'm posting and leaving. I'm tired, and wish to sleep. Dx Hopefully I understand what you're getting at...but it is me, so y'never know. ._.
I get what he's trying to say, but I actually disagree with most of what he has to say about obesity and I feel that this is not the place to debate it. He said that he's hear to discuss this thread but I've already outlined what this thread is about and that topic isn't it. If he'd like to make his own topic about this thread and how he feels about it he's fine to do so.
....He didn't say anything against the rules, though. ._. He was giving his opinion on why he didn't think this was the best idea.....I mean, in this kind of a forum--in any forum--you're gonna have people with dissenting opinions....>.>
I agree, but this is a thread for support, he doesn't have to agree with what's being said in it, he doesn't have to post in it either.
When I made the rule about no weight related talk it was for this issue specifically, I don't care if he thinks we're sugar coating things for people he views as too heavy. Overweight people don't need this thread to tell them that they're overweight, they hear it from practically every source already.
.......I'm not quite finished playing Devil's Advocate yet, though....and I'd like to wrap it up before I get off my a** and go to bed.
Support threads are nice and all, but this is called a Lifestyle Discussion forum for a reason. : / There isn't much to discuss when everyone agrees with you. Disagreements open up lots of opportunities to discuss things one or both parties may have not known before.
He wasn't telling anyone they were overweight...he was giving his opinion. That's kinda what this thread is for, is it not?
There's plenty to discuss, we can discuss how the media treats beauty for example. We can discuss how Unilever Dove chooses to have a self-esteem campaign in America while Unilever also makes Axe ads and sells skin whitener (in India I think.)
We can discuss how posting the sticky notes makes us feel, how it seems to affect our self-esteem. We can discuss how we go about making ourselves and others feel better.
Just because it's not what he wants to discuss doesn't mean there's nothing to discuss. There's really a lot if you only discuss the media issue.
And while he didn't specifically call anyone overweight, he did say that everyone in America needs to worry about their weight regardless of their size which is something this thread is not about at all.
