Adrienne
Nerissa, Goddess of the Sea
Adrienne relaxed a bit when Katherine did, smiling a little apologetically when she took one more glance outside and mentioned Kaz being busy. Hearing the woman call her "dear" again was both welcome and rather touching, especially now in her somewhat somber state, though she hid it well beneath the rivaling enthusiasm she felt for what was to happen. The bottle in the drawstring bag on her arm felt light as a feather yet a heavy reminder all at once, not to be forgotten. "Thank you," she said sincerely once she was invited in and Katherine walked off to make tea.
She was incredibly happy to see both of them, Kanu and Katherine, and it showed on her face. "Thank you, sweetheart. I'll explain once your mother joins us," she smiled at Kanu's greeting, touching her cheek softly before they started down the hallway and Adrienne put a gentle arm over Kanu's shoulders to both guide her a bit and as a loving gesture. "Many, I'm sure. Or at least a few major ones. And yes, he really did," she grinned as they took a seat on the sofa. Adrienne's eyes caught on Katherine as she entered the room with the tea tray and her eyes caught on one of the teacups, remembering Tirus' physical metaphor for the curse and feeling determination course through her.
Looking up as Katherine spoke, Adrienne pursed her lips. Well, she wouldn't have been able to avoid an explanation for long, she knew, but something in the woman's tone threw her off and made her not want to go into the explanation for how she'd arrived. It was the touch of concern in her voice, the motherly undertone that had the potential to turn to either relief or soft disapproval depending on which direction Adrienne's answer took. It made her soften and, like she had in response to Zekeal's kindnesses and acceptance, she wanted to keep it. It was the closest she'd ever come to feeling a part of a family, a part of anything except Kazuki's crew, even as she knew, with her own words of truth, she could undo it. She swallowed a lump in her throat; it was like saying goodbye to Zekeal all over again.
Taking a deep breath, Adrienne forced her smile a little and shook her head. Her nerves were clear on her face, her fear of rejection. It made her appear slightly timid, which she didn't take well to. Even so, she began, "No, I came here by my own devices. I actually have something I need to say in order to explain why I'm here, as I said before."
Realizing she was rambling a little, Adrienne took a deep breath and squared her shoulders a bit before admitting, "I'm not precisely who or, I suppose, what I appear to be... I have taken the name Adrienne permanently, but, um...I was known by another name once, one I didn't choose, precisely. My name was Nerissa." She gave a slight shrug and said rather casually, "I am the sea goddess."
And she waited for the cold look, the anger, the sadness, or anything of the like, but most of all, she waited for Katherine to reject her. She knew her qualms with the sea, Kaz and Kanu had mentioned last time that she blamed it for taking both her beloved husband and son away. Why would she react any other way? It wasn't as if Adrienne could really blame her either, despite her innocence.
