Welcome to Gaia! ::

Paakan, I have a tip to add to this guide:
From the Subeta-402chan raid, we can learn that it is a good idea not to use the same username and password combo for accounts on different sites.

Good idea. I include that in. I also made a "short section" for people to get the important information and of course kept the longer section for people to know details and why and how.

This is honestly the greatest thing ever... I've honestly went and just tried to type the number 2000 for length in it, my net crashed but it did give me a 1000 one which is pretty awesome. Thanks for the great site.

There's another way to make a secure password that is easy to recall AND doesn't require a randomizing.

Use a Mnemonic phrase. Wikipedia

For example, lets take the phrase "I have a strong password now thanks to this thread on Gaia." (No, please don't use this. It's just an example.)

Take the first letter of each word
IHASPNTTTTOG

Now, you can replace some character, or enter a certain set of numbers. This thread was created Sun Apr 10, 2005 12:17, so we'll use those

7IHAS102005PNTT12TT17OG

Get the idea? If you just wanted to change some characters around...

IHA%PNT!T!OG

You can also change the upper and lower case to make it more confusing.

Iha%PNt!T!oG

If you use a mnemonic phrase that you will remember, but that isn't one everyone knows (My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Nine Pizzas) it'll be much easier for you to remember, and much harder for anyone to guess.

I s'pose I should go strengthen my password...
Another thing which might be useful is this: Microsoft Password Checker. It's on the Microsoft site and certainly appears to be genuine rather than some sort of scam for collecting online passwords.

It would be useful if a password could be tested and its strength gauged once the user has created one which is believed to be secure.

A re-post of the link url because I know a lot of people don't trust anonymous links:

I'd like to think I have a semi-strong password, but maybe I need to refine it a little. >o>
Still, who would really be that desperate to try and hack your account?
@YourFavoriteOne: Enough users to make it so that it take months for a response to a hacking report.
