September 20, 2008: Thank you to everyone who participated in the event. It didn't go exactly as I had hoped it would but it did happen. With your participation we were able to pass the bandana through twelve hands. Those twelve names will be added to a special gift that will be sent along with the bandana to pepper-tea, our chosen Gaia artist. Thank you once again for taking part. WHAT: One Red Cowboy Bandana, it costs just 600g in the Barton Boutique in the Gaia gold shops. Introduced as a part of the May 2008 shop update featuring Wild West Clothing and traditional Native American costumes of the western tribes, the red cowboy bandana is an affordable item that ads a nice little touch to any avatar.

The Gaia Gift-wrapping System, is a system where members can send surprises to one another either with their name attached or anonymously. The little boxes with their colorful paper and ribbon sent by the PM system from one friend to another help to brighten a person’s day. Sometimes gifts are sent for special occasions and sometimes they are sent simply because someone fells like sending off a random bit of something.

[NPC] Rina is the gift system delivery gal. All gifts are sent through the Gaia PM system and all Gift PM’s are sent by Rina. When she’s not selling flowers, Rina is helping those Gaians who wish to give others the little pixel trinkets they have in their inventory to their friends and other fellow Gaians.

The One Red Bandana event, an experiment to see just how far one group of Gaians can pass around the same item to each other through the gift delivery system within a given time period. Gathering thirty people together, this event will give them a five day period in which they pass around one item through the gift giving system. The goal is to have that one item pass through thirty hands in five days.

UPDATES: As of June 18 we have achieved the original thirty people I was looking for. However, this does not mean I'll deny any more volunteers. Schedules change as do interest levels. If you still wish to take part in the fun then you are more than welcome to join. Thank you to everyone who has shown interest in this event.

On June 20th I have closed the poll to choose the artist. The poll was close but our choice is Pepper-Tea. In the end we'll be sending our bandana to her. Look for random fun polls each week from now until the end of the event. Then at the end we'll have a wrap up of the event with another poll.

July 8th: If anyone still wishes to join the event you have until Saturday July 12th to join up. The event will begin on July 14th provided the gift system is working again by then.

July 12th: If anyone is still interested in joining they are more than welcome to join. Since word about the gift giving system has yet to be heard, the event will start the day after gift giving is enabled again. You will be able to join up until the day gift giving is reinstated.

September 10th: Gifting is back so we have a definite start date and a few things to discuss first. So here's the deal. I know some of you have said you wanted to pull out for one reason or another. Being the lazy person I am I never removed names and forgot to change names. So, what I want from you is to let me know by Sunday if you still want to take part and if your name has changed and you don't see your new name on the list. I apologize if I seem to have missed or forgotten about your request. Come Monday at 12am US Central time we begin the event. The event will end 12am US Central time when Friday September 19th becomes Saturday September 20th. So you have until 11pm US Central time Sunday September 14th to inform me of any name changes, whether you're pulling out, and if you're a person not on the list interested in taking part.

September 29th: Planning is taking place for round two of this event. We're looking at a possible Halloween type theme this time around. I have a new poll up and am looking for input from people about the possible dates and items for the next go around of the event.

WHY: So what compelled me to start this event? Recent discussions in the Gaia Community Discussion and questing trends got me to wondering how many times one item can be gifted to a group of Gaia members within a given period of time. If a group of people passed along the same little inexpensive shop item to each other in gift boxes with the same message, how many times will it get gifted before it comes back to this account or the event ends? Would people be willing to pass along one red cowboy bandana to each other?

I decided to test out this pondering with a little experiment in the form of a community event. I wanted to make it something totally fun and unexpected. Unlike other gifting events, I wanted to make it something where the item doesn’t stop once it has been gifted. I wanted a pass it along event where more than just the sentiment gets passed on. I wanted that one gift to keep getting passed on to other users on Gaia.

I also wanted to turn this into something where, at the end. the participants of the event have a way to show their appreciation to the artists of Gaia. I wanted something that isn't seen as a way to get in the good graces of the artists or receive special treatment from them. They work very hard doing item updates, unisexing existing items, and bringing us new and exciting things to look forward to each and every week. In the very end, that one red bandana will be sent to an artist that the participants choose. Sent along with the bandana will be a certificate of appreciation with the names of everyone who received the bandana included on it.

The name for the event is very deliberate. Yes, it really is supposed to be the way it is. I see it as a tribute to recent Gaian trends and the people that inspire them. As this event was inspired by the trade up quests, the name works well because the event participants will be sending along that one red cowboy bandana.

WHO: So who is behind this event? The innovator of the One Red Bandana event is Chibi Halo. Halo, as her friends call her, is the 32 year old owner of the Spider Cam guild and the Indigo Eye Graphics banner shop. She is an occasional vendor on the marketplace, an amature photographer, an amature writer, and an active member of the GCD.

HOW: Just how will One Red Bandana work? It’s simple. To begin the event, a list of names with no more than thirty people who have volunteered to take part will be posted within the event thread. People will have until two days before the event’s start date to volunteer to participate. On the event’s start date at midnight US Central time, I’ll randomly choose someone from the list of participants and gift them the one red cowboy bandana in a red box with a message containing special instructions. The recipient of the bandana will then post in the event thread signaling they have successfully received the red bandana. I will then remove their name from the list of volunteers and place them on the list of recipients.

After their name has been added to the list, they’ll be sent a nifty little banner they can place in their signature space or on their profiles to show they’ve taken part in the event. It will then be their turn to pass on that one red cowboy bandana. They can pick anyone they choose on the list and send their own red box with the same message they received. This will then start the process all over again. In the very end when the event is over with, the last person to receive the one red cowboy bandana will be charged with the task of gifting it to one of the artists with a very special message from everyone who participated in the event.

The goal of this event is to not gain that fifteen minutes of fame upon Gaia. The goal is to gift that one little item to as many people on the list as possible during the allotted time frame. When interest or time has run out the end result will be twofold. One, it will show just how many people have passed on that one red cowboy bandana. Two, it will hopefully bring a smile to the faces of several Gaians.

WHEN: July14 to July18 these dates take into account the American Independence Day holiday weekend and any extra time spent on vacation travel days following that weekend.

As of July 8th the event is still scheduled to take place on the dates mentioned above. However, due to the July 7th Item Normalization update the gift giving system is offline at the moment. If the gift giving system does not come back online by Saturday July 12th the event will be put on hold until official word is given that gift giving is working once more. I very much want to run this event and will only do so when we can be assured it will run smoothly and properly.

The event will now take place September 15 to September 19.

The rules for One Red Bandana are quite simple and easy to follow.

[x] Participants must use a red box send the bandana.
[x] Each red bandana gifting must contain the same message.
[x] Once you receive your box you must post back in the event thread.
[x] Once you open the red box you must pass on the bandana to someone else on the list.
[x] The last person to receive the red bandana will give it back so it can be sent on to one of the site artists.


If you choose to gift something extra here are the guidelines to follow:

[x] Separate gifts sent must be contained in a white box.
[x] Do not send trash made items, insects, or single flowers.
[x] Gifts should not be more than one thousand in gold or less than fifty gold from the gold shops
[x] Sponsor quest items are acceptable as are existing small shop items from your inventory.

Below is a list of those people who have volunteered to participate in the One Red Banadana event. For purposes of giving that extra something to the next person to receive the bandana a link to their profile will be provided. You will have two days before the start date for the event to volunteer to participate in the event. Volunteers will be accepted until the cut off date or twenty-nine people join the event. This will bring the total number of people participating to thirty.

As of June 19, I have decided to take on as many people as I can until July 12. I don't know how many more interested people this event will get but if you are still interested feel free to join the fun.

The thread is now open and ready for posting. I tweaked my opening posts a bit to make them fit better with the overall goal of the event. I'll be adding a poll with a list of site artists we can choose from to be the recipient of our little red bandana. Do check back for that and vote on who you think should get that one red bandana.
