Thank you so much for this. I am so tired of Gaia and bluealaris being vilified for all this. They are being reasonable, which is especially seen from bluealaris' explanation in the staff alerts. Just remove the ads, stop abusing Gaia's IP for your own traffic emotion_facepalm But even worse, Tekton's plot has worked. I have been talking to some others, and apparently the n00b forum on recolor.me has been exploding, people joining recolor.me to support Tekton, saying they are abandoning Gaia.

Well fine then. Go to recolor.me >> I just couldn't get into it when I checked it out over a year ago. The games are unwieldy, I prefer Gaia's avi styles, the only thing they got going for them, is that you only need to buy like, 1 item, and can adjust the colors yourself. Can't do that here on Gaia (which is a source of endless frustration for me, especially since I am most picky about hair shades. There is almost no other decent hair styles with this particular shade and shine of gold).

I just wish there wasn't drama, ignorance, and vilifying going on >< so annoying.

The main thing I liked about tektek was the fact that it showed all of the poses for each item. I have terrible time remembering every pose. I'll just have to maybe figure out a better way to organize my inventory so that like items are together.
Tektek has been super wonky lately anyhow though. Half of the images wouldn't load anymore for me so I've just been using dressup.

I think people forget that Gaia didn't have to let TekTek stay up AT ALL. Most companies wouldn't- a dressup site that lets anyone, not just users, make pretty dressup dolls using their IP? Would not fly with most places.I stopped using tektek after the recolor.me ads came out on there. I didn't know they were even related to a side project, it just felt kind of slimy to me to advertise a rival site there.

Tektek hasn't been updated in ages, many of its tools are outdated or have better alternatives, and while the dressup was fun... Gaia has every right to protect their intellectual property. This is part of it. Tekton could be mature about it- but his actions speak volumes about his character right now, and none of them good.

I think people see Tekton as a person who can do no evil for creating Tektek in the first place, and others may even see him as a white knight for sticking it to the man! Oh that evil Gaia, stepping on the little guy! Let's go support him because we're angry with the big box brand! The thing is, my stance on this was on Gaia's side from the beginning, but this thread erases any doubt that they're in the right on this front. I'm pretty impressed that Blue had the pair to step up and do this, despite knowing that this sort of thing is what would happen on the Gaia side of things.

Recolor.Me is is blatant knockoff of Gaia--A sort of "what everyone wishes Gaia was like" from how they talk about it. You don't have to pay for most face mods, hair and skins, you can change the colors as you please, the focus is on the forums, the preferred method of collecting bits (their version of gold) is through games and forum posts, however you can pay a monthly subscription to get items as well, and to top it off: you even have some familiar items that Gaia has too, how about that! In my opinion, he's getting away with a lot. He's had free advertising on Tektek for months now and he's lucky that some of the items on his site fall under the same category as Gaia creating Pokemon items. And now posting this letter and stirring up the site, he has more people to come to his site and complain about how much they hate Gaia (because that's half of what they do over there every time I've been on.)

Now let's look at Tektek in the last year or two: Most of the site that was there upon its creation no longer exists, and the fuctions are still linked by the toolbar, which was never updated. This includes profiles, gradient text generation, basically everything that had to do with things that weren't items. The site has been grossly neglected for a very long time, which should upset people as much as anything else as this was made for them, and it's also ridiculous that it's happened given the lengthy credits of people who've helped maintain the site. It either means they were lazy/disinterested or too poorly organized to be effective. I believe people are confused in what they're angry over, which would be the loss of something they use often enough for it to be inconvenient (which it is, I won't disagree there), or they simply want to continue to see Gaia as this big evil thing because of this letter.

To sum things up, I don't think Gaia is trying to be as malicious as everyone is thinking, as they have clearly left him the option to keep his site should they be able to negotiate. However it seems that he isn't willing to negotiate at all and would prefer to just let Gaia take Tektek down. How good does that make HIM to the Gaian community?

I've been reading through a lot of the site feedback as well as GDC, and it just seems interesting. Tektek was given two options:

1. Remove banners / ads re-directing traffic to his other site (and he can keep TekTek up and running)
or

2. Shut down completely

Tektek simply chose to shut down. I know that bluealaris is trying to work something out with the owner of Tektek, but if he simply decides to shut down, it's his choice, not ours.

Normally I'd agree to some extent regarding the email thing if this wasn't already known about Tekton: he outright ignores anything regarding Gaia and you can see it several times how apparent this is in the main TekTek thread here on Gaia. His volunteers had a hard time getting a hold of him Tuesday during the server crash and then he quit responding to their messages for over ten hours.

His own volunteers for TekTek have had to fight tooth and nail to get basic responses for him regarding server crashes and things of that sort even through instant messaging websites while he's been online, available, and just posting around on recolor.me. Tekton has also made it very clear several times on recolor.me that he's been bitter toward Gaia for a few years now.

So between the email being sent and the letter having overnight priority mail shipping, he has had this via two methods since the 25th/26th of February. c: Does not excuse that he waited until now to post it just to incite an uproar since he's made it clear he has no intention of responding yet.

I'm pretty unimpressed with how Tekton handled it, buy rallying your fans for your cause is just how things are done anymore. Even if your cause is pretty silly.

As for the pokemon items and the idea of parody, I'll be the first to admit I didn't like Xumbreon and thought it was pushing it but the more gijinka based items I find fine. They're themed and in pieces rather than a whole fur based on Umbreon. There are enough differences for it to fit in with parody. ٥

Betrayal is like stabbing your friend in the back, and it was Tektek who stabbed Gaia in the back by using Tektek as a place to advertise a rival site of their own creation to steal clientele.

Think of it this way - you make a drawing and post it on Deviant Art. Someone makes a meme out of it and gives you credit. It goes viral, people learn about you and they start following your DA page. But then someone goes and takes your drawing and makes key chains and mugs and sells them on etsy. They are profiting off your work and you are getting no benefits for them doing so. You'd be pretty upset and want to take legal action to stop it, wouldn't you?

That's essentially what tektron did. In all reality Gaia could have shut him down on day one, but the site was benefiting both parties - Gaia was getting free advertising and Tektron was making some money selling advertisement space on his site - so they let him be. He crossed the line when he started making ads for his own rival site that were intended to steal clientele and plastered each page with them (and yes, using Gaia's copyrighted material to make a dream avatar creator is not only copyright infringement, it's art theft)
