So with the recent buzz around GCD and SF about Tektek shutting down, I decided to make my own thread. So let's get down to the nitty gritty shall we.

Tektek was slowly dying. The servers were crap and crashed multiple times. New items weren't being added to the database and when they were, it was weeks to months later. If you're running a service like this, you need to be on the ball, end up story. Even if you have to do a weekly or biweekly update to keep up with all the items being released on Gaia. It's a hell of a job, I'm sure, but users shouldn't have to wait months for items to show up.

Also, there was a advertisement for RecolorMe on every page. It's just as bad as the advertisements here on Gaia. It wouldn't have been so bad if the advertisements were just on the first page but every page? That's a bit redundant. I don't want to see an ad for a site I will never join on every page.

The letter is dated February 25th, so Tekton had this letter for roughly two weeks. He probably bided his time and wondered what to do with it when he thought of the idea to make it public to Gaians to start a s**t storm. Did it work? Of course. But there is another advantage to this, people abandoning Gaia to join Recolor me to "support" him.

Also, Tektek was a copyright infringement. He was taking items created directly by Gaia and using them for his own purpose. Sure Gaia let him have use of it for years and the problem probably stemmed from the advertisement of Recolor Me being on every page.

"But it's not copyright infringement if Gaia is doing it too!" You scream.

Hate to tell you, but Gaia has never stepped on those infringements. We've had sponsored items from creators of animes and express permission was given to directly copy any character. The "Pokemon" items we've gotten recently are parodies, which technically are allowed since they aren't a direct copy of any character from Pokemon.

Thanks, Zi! I found myself not using Tektek in the past year and it wasn't really that much of a loss for me. It just became decrepit and useless. The updates couldn't be kept up and suddenly it was easier to use my invo. Which you have to use anyway in order to see if layering works since Tektek is wonky with layering.

It feels like this is pretty accurate, to be honest. Tektek as a site has been dying very slowly but surely. Its accuracy has faded and it seemed like Tekton was either getting bored with it or stopped caring since the release of recolor.me.

It was also very inappropriate of him to post the legal letter he received on the internet for everyone to see, and it's obvious he made absolutely no efforts to respond to it as well.

Yeah, it feels like he wants to get back at Gaia for sending the letter in the first place and what better way to do it than to upload it to the internet and let Gaians tear it apart with no context? It's very fishy that he hasn't even replied yet.

I had stopped using Tektek for anything other than an inventory worth check (done at most once every couple of months) since it could no long keep up with newly released items, which was a while back. Guides are the new thing. More people to work on them, more chance of them being up to date.

I think that the delay in posting is not actually intentionally done to be malicious. I think it was because Tekton had been in discussions with Gaia for what the middle ground was, however, they weren't ready to meet with Gaia on some kind of middle ground, and that finally came to a head recently, so they posted the notice to let people know. I think that the photo of the letter should have been more heavily censored, because that was obviously going to be inflammatory.

100% with you on the parody thing. People keep saying 'it's not a parody!' But it doesn't matter what they say, it matters what was the artist's intention and how it will stand in court. Judges can be crazy slow and dumb about anything IT. They'll let it slip as parody in a second since it's only imitating in a comic way or 'a poor imitation' – which can mean whatever you want it to mean.

❤[******** nailed it, OP. I'm disgusted by TekTon's behavior, to be honest. Because this is EXACTLY what it's saying to me.
I have an account on Recolor me, i've logged on twice. I don't like it at all. TekTek has really been going down hill. I only used it really to calculate my worth and looking for the occasional quick item of 'wow i really need a pink accessory let's see' and it was easy.

Didn't tektek advertise for artists and such to create a new website to be Gaia's competitor? Why didn't they shut it down back then?

There has been a lot of evidence showing the decline of TekTek in favor for "recolor.me".
I'd like to say more, but at the same time I'm kind of done discussing this for the day haha.
So many headache posts from users that don't bother to make investigations on WHY it happened.

Its quite possible to milk it. I mean the opportunity is there rofl Though like other users Ive ignored recolor.me or any other ads on that thing like Ernya and..idek. There were loads of different avatar community ads around tektek. Tho yeah recently did it become purely for recolor.me

heart There has been a decline yeah, though cant say i blame him. The amount of items per day, stress over coding it for something so free. XD I think its smart he kinda let it sink already since it was gonna be the death of him if he did update it. Aint easy man. His love for gaia like early 2004s dwindled already i think. Which wouldnt make you want to voluntarily work at something that doesnt give anything back XD Understandable really.

Despite it being outdated and stuff--Its still a good proper database with easy sorting by colors styles, mods etc that i wish so much that gaia would implement xD But oh well sad
