I don't think it's nearly as old a joke as Christianity, to be honest.
It's a terrible shame for any child to be limited to the teachings of any religion. How can you know that you believe in something if you don't know anything else? People should always learn what they can, while they can, from as many people as they can. People should strive to know experience everything, whether in real life, through reading, et cetera. A mind works like a parachute. It only works correctly when it's open.
it's a scientific theory. that's that. kids shouldn't go throughout schooling never having heard about one of the most popular scientific theories of today. they can take it or leave it, just like any other scientific theory they're taught. but to act like it doesn't exist out of fear that your child might become a heathen? that's ridiculous.

I think evolution should be taught only to those who wish to learn it. In other words it should be an elective. Because I been around people who are totally against it and others who really really want to learn about it. This way I think we can avoid conflict with teachers, parents, and students.

You know how, once you get to a certain grade (usually 9th or 10th), you can choose which type of math and health you want to take? They do the same thing for Science, at lest they do for my school, I'm saying it should be one of those chouses, like biology or physical science. They should have one for evolution.

Or just making that specific topic, evaluation, an elective. But not science as a whole.

You still haven't given a good reason why evolution should be taught seperate.

You said because it causes conflict with religions? Reality hardly gives a damn about who's religion gets trampled.
Hypothesis or a Theory I like to point what they are.

Hypothesis are Ideas that have yet to be tested, have no facts yet to prove them to be more than that a Idea.

Theory is what a Hypothesis becomes after proof, facts have been shown that it is Possible. In the end A theory is a Ideal reached after looking at the info gather thru scientefic meens in order to test a hypothesis.

If a scientest finds there theory wrong later on, they do the work in finding the truth. Yes not all Theory are right, A scientest can make mistakes. But science moves one they learn from those mistakes and they do get a lot of things right. Theories found wrong are dismissed after logical evidence against it is shown.

So at this time there are facts to show that theory to be a 98% true.

The only people that don't agree with that theory are under-educated religious people. Who don't like idea that there Faith in god created them from dirt is being challenged.

No, I don't agree. Children should be taught both religion AND evolution and it should be up to them to decide what they want to believe.

By the way, we didn't come from monkeys. Monkeys and humans evolved from a common ancestor. People need to get that right already.

Religion should be taught in it's own class, and it should be a neutral view of all the religions, and shouldn't teach wich one is right/wrong.
ok its not the public school systems responsibility to teach religion. Religion is supppsed to be completely seperate. Kids who are religious learn all they need to know about their respective relgions outside of school. Inside the public school system all that it supposed to be taught is what is grounded in scientific study

Well I didn't mean religion should be taught in the way that it is in private religious schools, but should be taught as a basic overview of religion. The history of it, myths, stereotypes, and what religion is like in different cultures.

My reason, I guess, is not all that great and should be better thought out and such. I'm been around plenty of people who just don't feel conferrable learning it and that's why I said that.

And on another hand. What you learn in school is for future reference right? Well, I believe anyway, evolution isn't something a day to day person would use. It think it's purpose would only really help scientist or geologist. So in the end, why learn it unless you are planning to go into one off those fields I stated?

Ha! Sir, I said nothing about religion. And I agree with your statement too. *nods*

Most people will never use long division either.

School's purpose is to make you into a not-so-ignorant citizen, primarily one who can perform some task so you can get paid money for it but also so that you can form an educated opinion about things for that whole 'voting for people to fill governmental positions based on their stances on an issue' thing.

Think about it- if the handful of rich people making most of the decisions in our country all didn't know how something worked but were still in charge of making laws to regulate it what would we end up with?
Trash like the net neutrality act* is what.

*that one that lets internet service providers only provide bandwidth for commercial sites or block whatever sites they want altogether. Hell, they can accept money to reroute web addresses to whoever is willing to pay enough.

There's always the invisible pink unicorn. It's actually been around much longer than the FSM, but is far less well known.

Okay, you're in luck: that's how it is. Evolution is taught in Anthropology 101: Human Evolution (or whatever the specific title is at the various schools). This is a specialized course, usually not offered by high schools, but rather by colleges. Basic life science is only one semester (in some districts, it's a year, usually called "biology" in that case), and this is a prerequisite to higher life sciences. Your other high school science classes, health science and chemistry, don't cover evolution because it's not relevant to the subject matter. Erego you've already got your way. Evolution is part of life science (biology), so it's introduced there. It's not really part of physical science (geology) -- if anything, that class would be more likely to explore the Big Bang Theory. That's right, the two are seperate.

So try learning something about them before you marginalize them.

... Can someone translate this? I can't make sense of it, no matter which way I turn it.
It's my opinion that children should be offered a class that teaches about all major non-violent (practice wise I.E. being in wars doesn't count killing/hurting things during religious practice = no go) religions and ideals including eclectic religions such as Wicca as well as atheism and the idea that it's ok if you don't believe in anything or if you believe in something outside of the norm. This should also include the Theory of Evolution. Each section should be taught by someone from the religion being discussed that day, in order to avoid the entire class being taught by one biased individual.
Children's parents should have the option to opt their child out of the class with an appropriate alternate selection.

I know it's never going to happen, but honestly, I'd rather be educated in all things than be kept ignorant to be kept innocent or uninformed and I would want any potential children of mine to have the same opportunity.
