Only recently, after a newborn was left abandoned outside a church to be rescused, and only narrowly escaped death, did I learn about a Safe Haven Law. For those who don't know, the Safe Haven law provides that all Police Stations, Fire stations, etc, to take in newborns, while allowing the mother's total anonimity, to ensure that she doesn't kill it or whatnot.
However, the fun twist to this, is that 42 states may have the law, but that leaves eight without it. This also brings me to abortion laws. Personally, I am pro-choice, believing that a woman should have every right over her body, and what she chooses to do with it. But for those women who are against it, and want to have the child... where do they go? If in Massachusetts (where I'm located, that's the only state I'm sure lacks the law), she's left with no other option but to go to an adoption center, fill out papers, only to grow a bond with the child, and then leave it days, or weeks later. That's how long it can take for adoptions to go through.
So I ask, why no Safe Haven Laws? Why are women forced into a position of either abortion, or having the fetus grow into a baby, and go through the pain of adoption. Safe Haven Laws do take care of the babies, so why is it so awful? There would be no more women killing newborns out of pure desperation, and no more pain of forcing women through more trauma. I believe abortions lessen this to an extent, but I know how abortions spark more conflict than a child screaming in public wink So I'll try and steer from that.
So Safe Havens... why not now?
