D: I really don't understand you Americans. If an illegal immigrant needs to see a doctor here, they're not denied. Most walk-in clinics charge 25$ if you do not have healthcare, if you cannot afford that 25$, they will not turn you away.

Doctor salaries are capped here, so you can't get effed over like in America.

It is not the salaries but the insurance premiums for malpractice insurance that is killing us.

That's illegal here as far as I know. I think my insurance is around 200$ a year, included in my tuition, and covers medical and dental.

When we are young it is much less expensive. But I mean that the doctors themselves pay high insurance premiums because they can be sued. The lawsuits are enormous and out of proportion. Thus the doctors have to pay more and more and more to insurance malpractice coverage and pass that along to their patients or else they have to give up practicing medicine.

One of my father's friends was here for dinner tonight, he flew in from Boston and he was saying how poor healthcare is there. Doctors will even refuse to see you or not give you the proper advice and recommendations out of fear of being sued or losing money in general.

No one complains about the QUALITY of American health care. It is the availability and affordability for so many of us that is the problem.

Are you sure? From what I hear, it's absolute bullocks compared to Canada. We don't believe in private practises so we also don't believe we have a need for many hospitals so we have different hospitals to specialise in different areas. It works very well. We're opening up a new women's only hospital here soon, and a new cancer centre. The Catholic hospitals tend to be excellent too.

Not to mention the insurance vampire's delightful ability to drop you when you get sick without even a consultation with their own "doctors".

Obama mentioned a few horror stories including someone who needed a mastectomy who was denied because it was discovered she had failed to list a pre-existing condition of acne on her application. eek

I can believe that. Unknown "pre-existing" conditions are a bane to us and insurance companies love them. I was denied coverage for an x-ray on my SHOULDER for a strained muscle when the x-ray showed I had existing problems in my neck that I had no knowledge of. So I had to pay $248.00 out of pocket.

Are you ******** kidding me?!?!?! My doc was booked last week and so she got me in to see another doctor ASAP and the other doc demanded I get x-rays and an ultra sound (still haven't gone for x-rays, regretting it) and know how much it cost me? My time.

That is what trial attorneys would say, however the fact of malpractice insurance coverage is very real. I would urge you to re-examine this.

Excuse me? Re-examine what? The fact that malpractice torts account for >2% of the cost of healthcare in this country? The fact that the number of malpractice suits has remained relatively flat since the 1980s? I'm sorry, I'm just not seeing it as being so significant as some would have us believe.

Or opt for a public option, or greater regulation of the insurance industry.

I have no problems with whatever is decided by my President. He said that the public option is out. I don't care if it is in or out.

I refuse to argue with you about the cost of malpractice coverage. If you have sources, then bring them or better still, create a thread to discuss that situation. Most people are not in denial about this. Howard Dean acknowledges it.

I am happy and pleased to hear that your healthcare is excellent in Canada.
George Bush was never booed, but CNN did make a point to pan over to Hilary, Ted and Nancy who were all huddled together making it clear they had no intentions of clapping for him, while everyone else was applauding him as though he was the second coming during his State of the Union address.

Palin DID allude to death panels. She is going to be the death of the republican party if they don't disown her and soon.

She flat out called it "death panels" but she did not imply euthanasia as has been misrepresented.

Not kidding, unfortunately. Thought it was rather funny when the doc asked me if I knew I had degenerative disc disease (between CV3/4) and the beginnings of osteoarthritis (all those years of getting slammed and neck cranks in martial arts and assisting with training of horses). Didn't think it was funny when I was denied due to this condition I never knew I had.

I cannot recall President Bush getting booed during a joint session of Congress broadcast on National Television.

Can anyone else? If yes, can you please provide a link?

So it's so important that Republican lawmakers make asses out of themselves in public during a presidential speech now that you have to try and find an example of Democrats doing likewise for the previous administration? Is that what you're on about?

Noora, how do you feel about healthcare for all, like Canada has?

I have made a thread about this. I would like to see an American style Two-Pathway approach, Nationalized Health Plan on a dual payer system.

But before we do this, we really ought to put caps on malpractice lawsuits and make insurance companies offer national coverage, not state based coverage as they do now.

Obama's plan is also to force everyone to purchase health care insurance and I think that is going to be problematic. The reason we can force people to buy auto insurance is that it is based on the use of an automobile. If you don't drive, you don't have to be insured. So there is a choice there. If everyone is required by law to buy health care insurance, there is going to be a little dust storm. Most young people don't want to pay for that. I never had insurance except when employed and even then I never need it or used it.

That line of thinking is very dangerous. It leads to a huge lack of preventative care and a huge amount of emergencies. I don't doubt that you had no problems, but that is most certainly not the case for all, or even the majority. Chances are that people in college or about that age are going to need preventative health care.

Also, I believe Massachusetts or some other state thereabouts taxes or fines individuals without health insurance.

I didn't know that this was already a state law somewhere. If so, then there is a precedent set. Thing is people iz dum and there will be a new hullabaloo when everyone is required to purchase healthcare insurance. There are a number of people who don't believe in doctors, for example. neutral

She may not have said that, but that sentiment certainly came from the right, Noora. I think the 'SavageDittoSickFreak Nation'* is where that sentiment came from.

*I refer to the ignoramuses who take punditry as news. I certainly don't view all conservatives this way.
