Welcome to Gaia! ::

I stay on this site because of how it was before you became a load of money grubbers intent on turning this into Myspace. This site is still my homepage because I want it to get better. I want to see you guys get something right for once. But I'm quickly losing hope and so are a lot of your users. But as long as you get new ones to replace the dedicate ones you lost, right?

This is very true. When I showed Gaia to my friends recently he looked around and came to the conclusion: "So this is just like myspace, right?" With that question I realized the answer was yes. I tried to make Gaia sound as cool as I could but I ended up just rambling on about what's been lost over the years.

Listen, the only reaseon gaia is charging money is because of the cost it takes to keep the site runnging. Heck! TekTek.org costs about 1000$ a month just to pay for the servers!
But then how did gaia survive before all this money grabbing hm?

Please correct me if im wrong, but i found this under the games drop down box, then by clicking zOMG. People are saying gaia has trouble paying for itself and such but... here is directly copied and pasted from what can be currently found on the right of your screen if you run your mouse over games then click zOMG:

"July 25 - Casual Content: Gaia Onlilne's Trojan Horse MMO
Not convinced about free-to-play business models? Gaia Online rakes in over $1 million per month just from in-game item purchases."

eek Well, the smilie explains everything.
I agree with the first poster on alot of issues, but i love gaia, its something to do during the day.
Every site has something wrong with it.
(I mean, neopets is trying to keep up with gaia!)
But i do agree it needs its issues worked out.
I was quite mad about the cash shop. I never imagined paying actual money for an internet item. (though some are too awesome to resist... stare ) (the monthly collectibles i have no argue about though. Its just been a long part of gaia, and you could buy them with gold without causing a monopoly.[due to they weren't SO high the first month.] )
the "cash" flow has some up's to it. Were able to get the store items without spending lots of time rakeing up gold.
But the downside is, i could be spending that money on something in real life as well.
I just blew up both arguments. neutral

Barely. I remeber back when we connected to "sasha" the computer in a living room. =/
I remeber when we could pick what server we could connect to.
I want to make my opinion heard today.

Hello, my name is Raquel. I have been a member of gaia since December '04. Since then, I've flipped around on accounts but my original account hase been around since '04. At first, I figured that all the changes were good. Making gaia easier to navagate and what-not and I supported the change. There were not nearly as many n00bs back then either. Within a few year gaia has gotten to be more of a myspace for 11 and 12 year-olds and frankly, I'm quite sick of it. Then all of the things that startd to cost money. I undersand collectable items; that has always been that way. But aquarium items? These new evolving items? Why should I have to pay my hard earned cash for that? I thought that gaia was supposed to be a fun, free website. And since I've been a member, it has slowly become less free and a lot less fun. I'm getting tired of all the advertisement announcements. I don't care about any of that stuff. ((And if has to tell you how many kids are on the website when Madagascar ads are up...)) To be totally and utterly honest, I am tired of the road gaia has been traveling down. It should turn back before valuable members (the members with the money) decide to stop buying.

I totally agree with gaia being contradictory about saftey. That whole texing thing is just way out of line. Bribing 11 to 14 year-old with 1k to give out their phone number is just stupid. It shouldn't be happening at all. Kids aren't smart enough not to give thier numbers out. D<

Gaia was running off MC's for a while until the site got bigger, more features were added, and miscellaneous other things happened.
Following a dud MC (MoMo and the UFO), Gaia opted to get itself sponsorships and opening the Gaia Cash Shop to prevent itself from ever falling into the red again.

And then this link that' probably related...

I agree!

You know what else is ticking me off? When you go to "My Gaia", you see not only stuff that pertains to stuff that happens to ou, but you see things like "xxx has changed their profile" or "xxx has posted on yy's profile"

WTF? It's such a waste of space!

It reminds me of what i've heard about Facebook. I've never been on facebook, but i've heard that you see everything that everyone else does.

I delt with the same thing when trying to bring a friend to gaia, i ended up explaing Myspace, then when they said that it was like Myspace right, i said no and explained all the good gaia used to be and then it sunk in what's happening to our beloved site.

Even with all the money they make, still not enough for the site to make at least a little profit, and the growing will continue as long as the site lives.

So the cycle will keep repeating itself endlessly:

- More users join Gaia
- More maintenance required
- More funds needed
- More updates for money and sponsors

Is amazing how much life costs these days but that's life. I wonder if it will get to the point were Gaia will say: ''s**t, this is too much. We either close for good or break our promise become pay-to-play. I still think is possible, Lanzer said Gaia wouldn't charge money for logging in but now is up to Mr. CEO and I don't know if he was included in that promise.
wow, this thread explains exactly how i feel. Kinda ripped off!
Gaia statuses when i first joined were because of effort, but now you can just buy your way into gaia elitism. that very thought drove me to give away 99% of my gaia inventory & quit. i eventually came back just to stay in touch with some friends and the site has gotten even worse. anything cash involved except the MCs has ruined it.

Did i hear that right? If that happens i wont have a choice in leaving or not, i cant afford to do that.

To raise a point. They don't listen because as soon as a government takes charge it almost immediatly becomes slightly out of step. Same ideals with gaia. The sites grown so large it can never appeal to all demographics it just happens that the group its picked to support is a bad choice. The GDer Generation (as I like to think of them) isn't going to be loyal to the site unless they can get their lolz. Meanwhile the standards needed to keep the GDG interested (more content constantly thrown at them) is ruining it for the truly loyal group thats been here since whenever and actually wants an intelligently designed and ran site. Moderators take note:
You do not have to side with them. You to can be displeased with whats happening and if you are you can help make a difference! You have more influence than us at this time. We need you to help. Without some medium between the creators and the players you have a blind man trying to make a toy to a set of designs he can't even see.

thats not true. I've already proven you can get passed as an elistist without being rich. I've had this avi for over a year. I just pool gold and horde items. It's all how you act in Gaia.
IDK what the heck happened up in my last post, i quoted a message, anywho my words start up where it turns to all uppercase, that and the rest is mine. thats really wierd.
