I'm not sure if anyone brought it up yet, but they also announced they were going to switch the site layout to be centered for everybody, with no way to change it back (I have no idea when they're going to do it). It will supposedly look like the Centered Site option in Gaia Labs (which makes it squished). This was announced September 5th, so it's still within the "Month from Hell." They're apparently doing it because:

Narumi Misuhara
We entered into an agreement with a popular anime site. The agreement required that we center the site. More details on who the partner is will come later when we are closer to launch.

Even so, what's annoying is the poll asking what our opinion about it was. The "No, I prefer the site to be left aligned!" option got the most votes, and the "Yes! About time it was centered!" option got the least votes. "Yes" won because they combined the yes and neutral votes to be more than no. "No" is at 47.8%, which is still equivalent to half the site (especially since a lot of people who voted neutral will probably regret it when Gaia finally centers it).

Honestly I like the centered site. I use bettergaia and the site is centered in my settings for it. I think it looks much better.

Yes, but you have the option to use it. I wouldn't really mind if being centered was the default, as long as the original option was still available, but they're going to get rid of the current default. On some computers, being centered looks better, and on others, it looks worse. It also depends on visual preference. For me, it looks considerably worse when centered. All it does is squish the text, which makes it hard to read, and the background is distracting (and I predict it'll have those scrolling ads that follow you when you scroll up or down, like on other centered websites, which I hate). Even if the majority of people preferred it to be centered, and it sounds like they don't (or are content with the Gaia Labs version), there would still be a lot of users who can't use their preferred option. All I want is to have both options, one way or another.

There is a very simple way to solve it. Get BetterGaia. You can change your background, disable ads, and fix the "Squish" issue that I've never even noticed.

So far, I don't see a way to change the background (and I would make it something solid color like the right side of the left-aligned version anyway, so it's not distracting). In order to disable the ads (which they may make impossible to disable, like the Flash Space ads), I would have to keep buying Gaia Cash, which I am currently boycotting. If they make it so it doesn't look squished, it should look pretty close to what I already have, but it probably wouldn't count as being centered anymore. As it is now, there is nothing I like about the Centered Site version, and I never will, unless they make drastic changes to it. Just because you have certain preferences enabled, doesn't mean everyone else should have them, or even like them.

I meant within better gaia it is possible to to all of those things. Vanilla Gaia probably doesn't have those capabilities.

Oh, I was under the impression that BetterGaia meant Gaia Labs. It does look interesting, though, and I may install it once Gaia goes centered (although BetterGaia seems to recommend the Chrome version over the Firefox one). It would be nice if Gaia had all those options on the site itself, though. What does Vanilla Gaia mean?

Vanilla means without any addons to it.
I have chrome and firefox versions but I like both equally to be honest. They do all of the same things.

It's a great thing to have, more useful than the tektek addon in my opinion and more userfriendly than GaiaArch.

Well, I heard they weren't updating the Firefox version as much. I never installed anything from tektek, so I don't remember what they have. I never heard of GaiaArch either.

I used GaiaArch for about three days before uninstalling it. Tektek's addon only does post formatting and they only allow up to three post styles.

For players who have been around for a while, I'm sure this all sounds just horrific.

But, think of those of us who are NEW. A month of so many mishaps and mayhem all trying to get into our pockets without even letting a new player settle long enough to even access the Market Place..? I'm wondering why I should stay.

A friend pointed me here, speaking highly of Gaia but gave me the warning not to touch Gaia Cash for a while. Things must be in a sad state for that.
I know how I feel when I visit a new site and all they seem to want is my money. It's a huge turn-off, and I usually don't stay long. That's one thing that attracted me about Gaia when I first joined. The emphasis was on the community, and the staff and management seemed to be working with us to make this a fun place to hang out. In fact, many of them seemed to be having just as much fun as we were. Now there's more of an antagonistic relationship, and very few of the staff even communicates with us anymore. And when they do, they don't address the real issues that people want answers for.

Looks like they found one more thing to throw at us.

Merry September everyone.

Invisible Phantom

I don't honestly think the site centering is that bad--they needed it for a partnership. HOWEVER, they definitely made some mistakes in the way it was implemented. Why'd they bother asking if they were planning on doing it anyway? And that poll was very. . . baised. Yes was yes, no was no, and the neutral option wasn't really neutral--because of the bit about having it already implemented in Gaia Labs, it was leaning towards the yes side, which is probably why they counted it as yes.

I don't think it's a mistake. The way they went about it, yes, but the action itself? No.

Holy ******** s**t. o.O That's alot. Damn gaia. I admit I am guilty of buying alot of gcash but I putting that to a stop right now. If this is what happens in one month without any proper attention from gaia's staff then they honestly don't deserve the money we earn.
I agree so much. I've personally been on this site for a very, very long time and I've never seen a post by a gaian contain so much...well...FEELS.
I've been out of the loop for a few of these things, but you're totally right. They really don't seem to be caring about us at all anymore.

I loved your post in Ask the Admin. Great way to get to the points. I've been on Gaia for a few years now and never have they created so much turmoil and chaos. It's depressing to see a good site on it's way to bad.

I couldn't agree more. It feels like gaia does not care about their users any more. It just feels like they only care about keeping the website alive. I mean i could tolerate gaia going slowly downhill over the years because that happens to a website, but all of this in one month? No, this is ridiculous. Thanks to these changes Gaia has made I have had so many friends leave this site. I mean gaia's daily users went from 70-100k users a day in 08 and like 30k during the night. Now during the day for the U.S. we're lucky to get 20k users. It may be just people moved on with their lives but that is not 100% the case. It feels like this site is just for money now and that they don't care about the other users. This better change, because I'm on the verge of leaving. I did not see it coming that Gaia, once an amazing, fun and community loving site went to this now. I do not understand it. I understand that Gaia does need to do some changes to prevent it from being boring. However, a lot of these changes made gaia boring and very unpleasant to be on. I really only come on anymore to zomg, since that's the only good thing I really see about this site any more, and my friends on here that actually aren't ignorant like the majority of this site.

It's been going this way for a couple years, but I agree with you. I have never seen such chaos caused by the staff in such little time.
