Song of the Day

The Boy and the Peddler

Down by the river in the early, early morn
Sat a boy on the bank with an ear of corn.
His dog lay beside him and was gnawing on a bone
As the boy sat quietly, all forlorn.

Came a peddler down the river along the road.
He was riding in his wagon and singin' a song.
His voice was creaky and his tone was flat,
But the song was catchy and told of a cat.

The cat was a tabby, all orange and gold
And went by the name of Mister Bulltoad.
This cat was a dandy and that's no lie.
He wore a top hat and black silk tie.

The peddler stopped short when he saw the boy
Sitting down by the river all quiet and coy.
He came down from his wagon and said, "Hello"
And the boy replied, "I can't talk to strangers, or so I've been told."

Said the peddler to the boy, "My name is Jack.
Now we're no longer strangers, so come share a snack.
I've cakes and candies and cider galore."
And the boy got up, to see what was in store.

They went to the wagon and climbed inside.
The place was a mess and stunk of rawhide.
The boy held his nose and his eyes began to tear
As the peddler began to pour the beer.

The boy said, "Wait! I can't drink that.
My dad will tan me with a horsehair strap."
The peddler put down the jug of beer
And poured the boy a cup of good cheer.

They drank and they sang til the sun went down.
Then the boy said goodbye and turned around.
He climbed from the wagon and waved goodbye.
And the peddler drove off towards the darkening sky.

As the boy walked home, he forgot his despair.
And he ran his hand through his long dark hair.
His dog beside him and a smile on his face.
As he hummed a song about a cat in a race.
