Firefox is weird that way. Most of the time it's fine, and then some days it just crashes over and over.

When I have problems like that, I generally close my eyes and choose a random base color, then doodle on it (with repeated use of CTRL-Z) until something looks like it might work, and then go from there.

You're not a loser! Plenty of artists and colorists do better with a reference of some sort - and the firefox symbol DOES have a good color combination. Working better from a reference is no bad thing - colorists who work better that way tend to do much better tiger stripes, for instance.
