Nolan, Charles, and Hudson had a friendly wager going. The kind of friendly wager that could have him waking up in chains if he wasn't careful, the young hare knew. He wasn't terribly worried; Nolan knew next to nothing about these beetles, but he was quite confident that, even between then, Hudson and Nolan knew even less. Besides, risking a wager bought him a bit of time to plan an escape route. Nolan was quite pleased that the pair had even given him the option. With an all-too-forced grin for the cat and lizard, Nolan scribbled his name onto a sheet, accompanied by his selections. 'Herbicide to win, followed by 2, 5, 1, 4.'

Charles was next, swaggering up to write his own choices in his loopy handwriting. 'K'pow-POW-powzer, then 3, 1, 2, 4.' And finally Hudson, who had to think quite a bit about the direction a P faced before he was able to write his own decisions. 'The Pretty Pink Princess, then 5, 3, 4, 2.'

And it's Pretty Pink Princess off to a running start, with the Jumping Beetel M right behind her, but no, look, here comes the crowd favourite today, the one the only Herbicide, he's racing with all his legs akimbo but it seems to be working for him. Poor K'pow-POW-powzer, he's running like a duck back there and it's costing him this race.

Which he does, of course, but isn't using because that would disqualify him... he's passing up the Mighty Jumping Plummer, and now he's blowing the Princess a kiss as he flies past her! AND IT'S THE PINCHLESS PINZER FOR THE WIN! WHAT A RACE LADIES AND GENTLEMEN! ... what a race. Be sure and collect your prizes at Hyperion table, laddies and ladies... good race... good race.

Hyperion's Famous Fleuvian Racing Beetels Beetles

Hyperion the Shrew stands before you in Mossflower Common. He looks... shifty... but then again that's always how he looks. Before his little spat covered paws are five beetels... excuse me... Beetles. They are the Famous Fleuvian Five.... No matter that they've been the Famous Fleuvian Five for years and years and they continuously change colours and size from race to race. Bettels go to heaven right? Anyway... you can't help but grin as you look upon the fourth or fifth reincarnations of your beetle heroes.

Of course, you already know just by looking at them which is which, because they're famous... but as the other creatures start to gather around, Hyperion starts up his typical speech.

Cittizens of StoneCrest! It is that time again, that time when all creatures great and small come together and test the fates and my mistress the Lady De Cassa Luck. A time when even the wildest dreams can come true and the lest of creatures kin win a fortune. You know them, you love them, they'ze here, and they'ze ready to race their little beetel hearts to the breaking point for your love and admirsation. Frogs and fieldmice, fish and fox, flapper and flipper... and all the res of yis, putcher paws and claws together for the Famous Fleuvian Five! Number one, the Pretty Pink Princess! Number 2! The Mighty Jumping Plummer M! Number Three! They one the only, HERBICIDE! Number four! The almost pathetic, Pinchless Pinzer! and last and only sometimes least, Number Five! The aptly known Twice around the park, or as his late mum liked to call him, The K'pow-pow-powser!

Now ladies and laddies, you knows the high pitched drill here, step up to the table, claim a ticket, write-cher name and address if yer a pretty one, and jes yer name if yer got anything like buck teeth or knatchy ears or whatnot, and then write-cher choice to win, and follow it with the lineup there upon... gots it? Paper, name, number if'n yer a hottie, beetel to win, and the lineup to follow."

(( In order to participate in this race, all you have to do is say what you're betting (just make it up, a cake or a bracelet or something) and make a bet with your character. Each of your characters can put down their bets on what order the beetles will win the race... that first race was free... but this one you gotta say you bet something to be in it.

Example::

Amelia stepped boldly up to the table, and slapped an acorn cup down on the table. The thing was crude but well built, and it had teeth marks in it far greater than Amelia's little choppers. She didn't steal it... she only borrowed it. She intended to win this race and get her uncle's cup back anyway. Grabbing a charcoal stick with a grubby paw, she scrawled "Amelia" on the top line, and "Herbicide to win, followed by 4,2,5,1" underneath it in a very neat little form. ))

Tuck grinned happily at his new possessions. He turned to rub it in his guardian's face, but thought better of it after seeing the shrew's scowl. "I'm trying again!" Epra declared. She placed a small pouch of tea leaves down. "Herbicide will win this time! With 1, 5, 4, 2 after."

Tuck just shook his head. But he couldn't resist betting once again. But... with what? Ah... he pulled a small piece of lumpy glass out of his pouch. He'd found it, probably some discard of one of the glassblowers. "K'pow-POW-powzer this time. Then 2, 4, 1, 3."

Garret was happy to win a small prize, but he wanted more! MORE! He stuck his half-rotted stick weapon up as an offer. "The Mighty Jumping Plummer M this time. Then 3, 1, 4, 5."

Fran was not happy. She'd picked the loser. How terrible! "Mighty Plummer, you let me down." She pulled a length of multicolored yarn from a pocket. That should be enough for a decent bet. "Let's see... I think Pathetic Pinchless Pinzer will win again. And then 5, 2, 3, 1."

Winnie frowned as much as a bird beak would allow. She plucked a loose feather and put it down. Hey, those furry beasts wore feathers in their hats all the time, so why not hers? See, that silly squirrel in the skirt had one in his cap! "Pretty Pink Princess again! Then 4, 3, 2, 5."
