My kitty got super affectionate with catnip; he never got hyper. You could sprinkle it on a toy and he would decide, "I love this toy," and curl up with it and go to sleep xD;

I've never had a can't who wasn't affected by catnip in some way until my sister's cat, but she doesn't really purr either. But my cats get hyper for a bit, play with the toy.. then snuggle with it and then hit their low pretty quickly.
