Was that my reflection?

The boy loved the House of Mirrors, knowing that there wasn't a chance of running into a clown in there. He liked being able to scare himself, and mirrors were a great tool for that, altering perception so that it seemed that you were truly lost. That was half of the fun. This one was no different, lights low, with spooky sounds in the background, and he entered excitedly, with his best friends close at hand. "Come on guys!" It wasn't long before they were deep inside the maze, and when he ran into the fourth dead end in a row, the boy was starting to get frustrated. "Oh, come on."

There was no reply, and when the boy turned, his friends had disappeared. "Guys?" He said nervously. "Where are you?"

He attempted to trace his steps back, causing himself to get more and more confused, unsure of where he was in the maze, or where he had been. He was starting to get scared at this point, truly scared, and he stopped by a mirror that looked fairly normal. It didn't alter his reflection or anything, but as he stared into it, one hand toying with his shirt nervously, he noticed a crack began to spread throughout the whole mirror, and he ran away from it as fast he could, stumbling on the exit by accident.

The vampire waiting there grinned toothily at him. "Thanks for playing! Hope you enjoyed the maze on this Sunday afternoon!"

From outside, it looked just like it had when he had entered, but the laughter seemed to be even more evil than it had been. Maybe it was just his imagination.

Snuggly Knight

Was that my reflection?
It was moments like these that Tony Darrow felt the pangs of regret. Where he reflected on his life and its choices, and questioned how he had come to this particular point in time. What had he possibly been thinking, agreeing to come to this carnival when he knew he was a magnet for things strange, awkward, and embarrassing? Why did he think today would be different?

It was never different, Monday through Sunday, January through December.

Down in the dumps, Tony stared at himself in a mirror, his reflection warped and seeming to glare at him in a condescending and not particularly handsome way. It made him shrink back a bit, which just made the reflection facing him twist grotesquely. He shuddered and looked away from it. As his head turned he could have sworn he caught movement in the corner of his eye, but when he paused to look every thing was still once again.

He must have seen himself in a mirror while his eyes were shifting, was all.

Sighing, he walked on.

“Kyndall? Harmony? Nathan?” He called, his family apparently finding a quick way through the assembly of mirrors and trick walkways that he had managed to miss. He had been right next to them, almost walking in perfect sync with his wife, and then their footsteps had vanished. He just thought he had made a bad joke, and that was why no one laughed, but when he turned to look at them to defend himself he realized there was nothing but a reflection of himself at his side.

Simple solution: turn back and walk the way he had come.

“Dogby?”

Even the dog was not with him, which just made him nervous. Not that she was a particularly great guard dog, with her less than a foot of height, high pitched whine that failed to really be a bark, and her legs that seemed to be missing a joint. She was as useful as a safety blanket, but that was her purpose. He was getting a little tense now, and he wished he had her to cuddle and reassure himself with while pretending he was just making sure she wasn’t the one getting scared.

There was some movement to his left and he glanced over, seeing something small and red darting down a turn nearby. A moment of paranoia hit him, and he thought it might be a youma. He had to fight every instinct not to just power up right there and chase after it, or just punch his way out of this insufferable maze of himself.

He was really getting sick of that scared look he kept seeing on his face. He was forty years old!

Tony bumped into a wall in his mental abstraction, thinking the hall was longer than it was due to tricky reflections and a lack of attention that was crippling, and let out a yelp that not even a young girl would be jealous of. He moved to grab for it, thinking it would fall over. It did not, but his wild attempts to save it made his elbow slam into the mirror next to it, unrooting it from its rigging and sending it crashing to the ground. He stood stone still for a long time, then looked down at the ruined mirror and, he imagined, the years of bad luck that were ahead of him.

On the other side of the wreck was a very angry looking clown, who was shaking his head at Tony and silently confirming that he was, without a doubt, the biggest loser on the planet. The clown was five years old, likely dressed in his costume by his mother, but had really mastered that look of consternation and judgment. Tony felt compelled to apologize to him, but realized that he had no reason to do so, then considered blaming the broken mirror on him.

“It’s alright, I’m sorry if I scar-“

“THAT MAN BROKE THE GAME! HE’S CHEATING!”

Stunned by the little boy’s impressive lungs and penchant for fair play, Tony could only blink or a long moment.

“No, no, I am not trying to chea-“ something latched onto his arm and pulled him down a mirrored hall, toward a glowing green sign. The exit!

“I bet you were just going to stand there until someone came to yell at you, too,” the familiar voice of his less than honest son, Nathan, grunted. The teenager glowered at him as he turned his head to protest. It died on the air, though, because he had been going to do just that. Then pay for the damage. He did note, however, that Nate’s look of damning shame was not as good as the clown’s.

Nate pulled him out the door and hurried him along to a hiding place as shouting voices followed them out. They did not sound too happy, and were likely on the hunt for them now. Tony had not been giving any choice in the matter, and was now a fugitive of Carnie law. The sad thing was. he was used to this kind of thing and, despite himself, was actually having fun as they ran to hide. Were they bonding? This could be the moment he had been waiting for, the thing that helped them relate to one another, and help them become closer as father and son. Escaping trouble together. It seemed too perfect, really.

“Hey, Nathan, thanks for…”

The teen was gone.

“Sir, you need to come with me,” a gruff voice said. Tony turned to see a man in overalls and a festive hat that did not match the expression on his face or the grime on his body glaring at him seriously. At his side, the mini clown from It.

So much for bonding.

Was that my reflection?

(
I HOPE YOU DON'T MIND THIS COMPLETELY RANDOM MADE UP RIGHT THIS SECOND CHARACTER BECAUSE...yeah. Also Halloween. -hides forever- )

Avia had never been at all fond of mirrors.

She had always felt a certain conviction that the contraptions, those seemingly flawless panes of glass, never truly could catch and capture the true reflection of a person. No matter how fine the cut and how glossy the pane, the face that looked back at a girl always seemed to be a bit in error. Perhaps not in an obvious fashion...stretched just a little too wide, or scrunched a touch too thin towards the bottom. Not a true mirror, it seemed a shame that such desecrators of the human masterpiece could be purchased a dime a dozen from the local general stores.

And the girl liked even less that she'd now been left alone in a house of such mockeries, these purposefully warped and distorted. Replacing her lean figure was, instead, before her, a hideously blobby creature with the deepest of scowls, almost carving the expression onto the image, which, she mused, seemed more like a tragic decorative plate than a representation of a person.

There were mirrors wreathed in smoke, glass that seemed to beckon into a world beyond, and even a few that had been backlit, giving the atmosphere 'round a distinctly otherworldly vibe. The only sound was the distant babble of the carnival, the maniacal cackling of the painted clown and the bark of carnival workers beckoning passers-by to play games and make wagers...that was all seemingly another reality away, and the eerie hiss of smoke machines was the only intruder to the silence that she'd attained.

It was then, striving in vain for the way out, annoyance giving way to the pattering of her anxious heart...a true panic arising as the exit eluded her...it was then...that Avia found her mirror.

It awaited at the end of a hallway, another misbegotten turn hedged by pathways of mirrors that made you needle-thin or twisted in half. It was all by itself, her mirror, all-but hidden in the corner, in the forgotten depths of this carnival attraction, cobwebs clinging to it, tho it seemed even spiders dared not touch the ebon glass.

When she saw it, it was just then that she'd realized that she'd always known it was waiting for her. She had known that it would always find her, it had been patient, accellerating forward into her fate with the ploddingly maddening speed of a Sunday driver. She looked into it...and she saw herself. Truly herself...a flawless reflection in the inky darkness of the glass.

The nervous thumping within her chest had given way to an exhilirated pounding, her throat gone dry as she reached forward with delicate hands, almost afraid to move lest the mirror slip away and elude her for years to come. Avia took a step forward, and then another step...and then she touched, the glass seeming silken to her touch, unmarred by her presence against it.

The next step was natural, like curling into a warm blanket fresh from the dryer...and then it caught her, and it held her, tendrils of inky glass coiling about her slender frame, clutching her as it irrevocably drew her into its depths.

And she knew, that it was never going to let her go.

Avia Karle had found her mirror.

( Azure you know that would never happen, Azure, get out. /ded )

Was that my reflection?

No trip to the carnival was really complete without a trip through the House of Mirrors, which was why Arian was spending part of his Sunday afternoon wandering through the mirrored twists and turns.

The dark-haired teen had been expecting something a little more goofy – you know like the mirrors that turned you pencil thin or round and fat like a ball – or even the type of mirrors that truncated you down so that it almost looked like you didn’t have a neck.

Honestly he should have guessed that something up from the creepy clown at the ticket booth as instead of fun, goofy ‘thin’ and ‘fat’ mirrors, the interior was instead definitely more towards the creepy side. It was gloomy from the poor lighting and to really up the low visibility stakes someone had had the idea to use a sort of thin greenish smoke – most likely to add to the atmosphere.

It was fine at first, Arian was with a group of friends – they could laugh, albeit nervously, at each wrong turn landing in a mirrored dead end, but then he’d taken a turn left when the others must have turned right and when he turned around they had suddenly not been there anymore. Hurrying to what he’d thought was the others voices had only seemingly served to send him further in the opposite direction and now the dark-haired teen was hopelessly lost.

Alone, what had seemed a little spooky was now starting to seem a lot more creepy, and the almost endless corridors were starting to take on a sort of never-ending feel to them. Or maybe the never-ending was his imagination – it was easy to think of the thing going on forever after hurrying forward to what seemed like an exit only to find yourself bumping into a pane of glass for what must have ‘only’ been like the nth time.

Once he got out of here Arian decided that he was going to find something nice and boring to do – like fish out the bobbing plastic pumpkins or even paint and stamp the leaf, maybe indulge in some candy corn or even a toffee apple. He told himself he was ignoring the nervous little mental voice wondering if he was going to manage to get out of here.

Nope, not going to listen – for a start there was an opening just up ahead and maybe even the exit. The dark-haired teen was even anticipating hunting the nearest candy corn vendor, could almost taste the sweet treat on his tongue…

And then his eager relief was brought crashing down to earth. No exit for him just another mirrored dead end.

((This might be TOTALLY late but I wanted to enter it anyways because well it's a house of mirrors~))

Was that my reflection?

Willow was more than happy to walk around the house of mirrors. It was one of her favorite things in the carnival. There was a hum as she walked around totally and blissfully unaware that her friends had gotten separated from her. There was a hum, pausing when she looked back from laughing at one of the mirrors. "Hey this is..... fu....."

There was a moment's pause as she looked around frowning heavily. Suddenly things were a lot spookier and making her more nervous by the minute. As she walked along she kept hitting dead ends as she looked around panicked. How was she ever going to make it out? There was a pause as she thought and suddenly started following the mirror glass, hand placed lightly carefully trying not to make smudge. Even if she kept hitting dead ends she could follow the glass and make note of where she'd already been.

Suddenly she ran face to face with a clown. There was a startled yelp as she backed up forgetting she'd been following the mirrors and turn around to run away. It was a particularly scary clown one that looked like he could've been running around with a chainsaw and fake blood on his mask. Perhaps his name was knuckles or something....

Willow didn't stick around to find out as she ran face first into the back of one of her friends. "Oh god, I-I'm sorr---....." There was a pause as she blinked and her friends looked at her a bit shocked. Willow coughed, "Sorry... I got a little turned around back there." She added calmly. "Let's go, it's Sunday; I hear there'll be some awesome show at the theater!"

The only time I can really see this coming into effect is during the rolling of winners. So if there are like... tons of power outages running from the 31st - 2nd and a bunch of people don't get their pm's in then we'll look into possibly extending the time limit. Hopefully it won't be a problem though.

Everyone stay safe!!
