The Invitation
Perhaps you've seen one of the fliers stapled to telephone poles or bulletin boards around Gaia, or maybe you've heard an announcement over the radio or on local news stations. Either way, you know there is an open Halloween costume party being hosted by the horror novelist A. Murray to help fund the growth of a new children's section in the Barton Public Library. Entry is $5. It may be a big publicity stunt after all, but who knows? Maybe the man just likes a good party.

The Setting
The party is to take place on Saturday, October 31st from 6pm to midnight at the Barton Public Library in Barton West Field. Perhaps you've been there! The tables on the first floor have been moved to the sides and draped with black tablecloths, leaving room for an impromptu dance floor just beyond the empty lobby hall and offices. The DJ (who is dressed as a gorilla of indeterminate gender) has set up just beyond the staircase and the long, stuffed buffet table is in the center of a rope barricading the shelves of books beyond from patrons. The second floor runs around the outside of the library above the blocked-off shelves so party-goers may peer down at the dance floor over a well-polished dark mahogany railing. The book shelves up here are roped off too, but that's not to say it wouldn't be simple to duck beneath them as the librarians mull around in their quirky witch costumes and collect the entry fee. The sprawling building is decorated in a fairly predictable way with hanging pumpkins, bats, and spiders amid the shiny streamers. Clumpy wool spider webs are hung here and there, and of course there are body parts and bones and the occasional creepy latex creature. There is a table in the emptied children's area covered in pumpkins an elderly librarian is lording over for pumpkin carving, but otherwise it is nearly impossible to tell who's who.

The Contests
Pumpkin Carving - Use shoddy plastic pokers and knives to make your pumpkin smile (or not)! You're free to take it home with you at the end of the day.
(OOC: you can use this pumpkin or one of your own and "carve" it in any art program you like any way you like within PG-13 restrictions. PM entries to Rabid Ice Weasel!)
Costume Contest - Come dressed in your Halloween best for the chance to win the grand prize!
(OOC: when you post, include a description or image of your character's costume and you will automatically be entered in the contest!)

Trick-Or-Treating
What would Halloween be without candy?! There's hot Cluelass1 candy everywhere, some stashes hidden more cleverly than others, and every person to join the party is given a happy little pumpkin bag. Whatever you find is yours to keep, and who ever has the most candy at the end of the party wins a prize!

(OOC: the Heralds rp managers will occasionally post an image of candy, and the first person to quote and respond to it wins it. we do ask that all posts later be turned into rp posts, though! keep in mind that any candy not posted by Rabid Ice Weasel, Kotatsu-chan, romantic wishes, or Suboshi-sama is totally fake and will not count toward your score.)

Aodh had every confidence that this party was going to be the best thus far. In previous years he had been invited to appear at various little book store parties, but this was the real deal. This was all his own doing. Thus far, the crowd was mostly parents with their kids just back from Trick-or-Treating, but a few groups of teens had arrived and all of the staff seemed wary. If s**t went down, Aodh would take them down himself.

The invisible man sat beside an ancient Greek version of Niven who apparently liked Snickers just as well in 250 BC as he did in 2009. Unfortunately, there were yet to be any children his age, and even Guinevere had yet to show (although he couldn't honestly blame her). Hopefully there would be someone for Niven to play with so he would leave his father's side. Daddy wanted to go hang out with the grown-ups and hopefully discuss literature.

Well hey. He didn't just want to sit at home and just hand out candy to the few people who could be bothered to make it all the way out to their house. And he didn't really want to take the various younger people in residence around trick or treating, and he really didn't have any other place he could think of that he wanted to go, so.

Here he was. He saw flyers for it around...somewhere. And hey, it looked as if it would be interesting. So there he was, trying to ignore the accusatory looks from the librarians, a lolipop most likely snagged from the bowl at his house meant for the trick or treaters hanging out of his mouth.

And, of course in costume. It was tradition by this point. What else could he be?

The Halloween party was to be his most recent mode of redemption. He had been more of a jerk lately than normal, a lot more drinking, a lot more yelling. So the guilt set in a lot hard it than it usually did and he needed to make up for it all. He and Ophelia had seen the flyers around and the idea of party if not Halloween in general had really excited the little girl so it seem like the thing to do. Besides Ophelia enjoyed reading and he had been an English major before dropping out of university, the library was a good cause to support.

So here the two were, dressed up even. Though finding costumes had been a chore, the little angel had taken forever deciding what it was that she wanted to be. In then and she had decided on a rather nice little red riding hood costume, her favourite fairy tale. Dmitri had decided on whim that he would match her, though in a much less elaborate costume, in that he wore a pair of grey ears and a tail, he was the big bad wolf. Being the former English major that he was, he had a habit of reading into things and he was sure if he wanted to he could argue some find of symbolism in their costumes if he had wanted to.

"So, we're here, what do we do now?" Dmitri asked looking down at his little charge. This was for her after all.

Ophelia was meanwhile looking around the room, excited to see the costumes of the other people. She was really only half pay attention to Dmitri so all she managed to reply was a mumbled "I don't know."
[[ Yes, indeedy! ]]

Wonderful. Another teenager. Aodh had watched the viking enter and wondered if he was coming to meet friends or if he had come alone. Perhaps he'd know someone here or, all else failing, perhaps he knew Guin. Certainly she would show up sooner or later. A viking, though, looked like trouble. Angry teenage trouble that he had nearly hit with his bike.

A rather sweet-looking couple entered just after him, though, and Aodh could not help but notice the little girl's strange black and purple wings. Perhaps she wasn't...oh, what had Guin called them...a Messenger! Perhaps she wasn't a Messenger, but she was certainly Niven's age and she certainly looked sweet enough.

"Go on, then," he said softly to Niven through the chest of the costume, "Go say hi."

Niven's eyes went wide, and he nearly shook his head. He was overwhelmed by this whole party thing already, and he wasn't sure he could push through the crowds to make friends with yet another stranger. He looked over to the girl again, though, and thought that she really didn't look all that scary. A little tall, maybe, but not the type to punch him out. As an afterthought, he grabbed a mini Milky Way from the bucket on the table and approached with it held out before him like a peace offering. He smiled and waved slightly.
Jin Tian, much to his dismay, had been poked, prodded, and essentially shoved into a strange costume on another one of Epsilon's whims. The teen had seen the party fliers and could not resist the Halloween celebrations. He'd even managed to wrangle the antisocial Basil into the whole thing too. Now, the three of them, plus Basil's seeing eye dog, Molly, stood on the threshold of the library entrance, dressed as the Three Musketeers.

Basil, who played the role of Aramis, sighed loudly again. "Are you sure about this Eppi?"

"Porthos. I'm Porthos." Epsilon corrected. "And yes, I'm sure." He adjusted his hat to sit rakishly atop his head, fluffing up the feather stuck in the band. "Now come on you two. And Athos," this was said to Tian, "adjust your tunic. It's crooked." That said, the rambunctious teen headed into the party and the dark, booming atmosphere.

Tian cast Basil a long look of apprehension and the blind boy smiled as if he knew exactly what the male's expression was. "Come along then Jin Tia--I mean Athos. I'm sure this'll be an experience you shall enjoy. You even cut off you antlers so you could wear the hat properly. Don't let that sacrafice go to waste." Without another word, Basil's golden retriever led the boy into the library, closely followed by a still nervous Jin Tian.

When the duo entered, a cry of "all for one and on for all!" could be heard from Epsilon over by the refreshments, setting down a bowl of candy he had brought. Tian's gaze slid from the laughing teen to look over the place, scanning the area for a familiar face. He hoped someone he knew was here.

Deathly Darling

Guinevere had decided against going to Mr. Murray's party.

She had very firmly decided against it, because considering her weird power, the fact that her mother's funeral had been not a week ago, the fact she had just got a new job, and that she suddenly had to find a home for a small girl, she was not in a partying mood. Not even if it was hosted by Aodh, who had shown her nothing but kindness through the whole ordeal.

This didn't change the fact that she had made a costume anyway. Not to mention Lucretzia, the little Herald she had found lurking in the unlikely setting of a demon summoner's place of business, had found out and begged to attend. So she had quickly sewn another, smaller costume and arrived a bit late to the party, dressed as Jane Eyre with a little Adele tagging along at her heels. "Now Lucy, behave, okay? Don't go too far from me and don't talk to strangers, and be on your best behaviour. And your costume was made at the last minute, so remember, don't tug on it or anything! I'll fix it if I can, but just be gentle." Guinevere's natural tendency to mother people came in handy for once now that Lucretzia was living with her until she found a suitable home. "This is a crowded place, so..."

However, she trailed off as she saw a familiar looking viking on the scene and burst into laughter. "Oh, really!" she exclaimed. "I knew I should have dressed as a witch."

Silverah's Pardner

Stellar Lightbringer

Lucretzia could not believe that she was really at a party with Guinevere. She wanted to like going to parties, just like she really wanted to like one of the potential guardians the older girl kept interviewing, and this seemed like a really good way to start liking parties, by going to one! Right? It was, wasn't it? She knew it was!

And to think, Guinevere hadn't been planning to go. It was a good thing that Lucy had asked about the flyer.

She listened to the lecture, pausing in the middle of tugging on her skirt and then smoothing it down again. "I'll be good, Miss Guinevere," said Lucy, "I'll be the best ever, really!" Then she let her voice drop a few octaves and said, "But everyone's a stranger, can you introduce me to people so's I can talk to them?"

"Miss Guin," asked Lucy after a moment, "Why should you have been a witch?"

Spooky Codger

Well, there didn't seem to be a lack of interesting people around here. And it seemed he had been quite out of the loop as far as the whole Herald community went, as there didn't seem to be a lack of tiny, strangely winged kids running around. Go figure.

The lolipop had long since been devoured, though the stick was still being absently chewed on as he scanned the crowd of people. And there was that...guy with the bike. Goodness, now why did he think that he would be trouble? That's just silly. Aodh was given a brief wave and a grin, before he heard a familiar voice.

"Well, I couldn't think of anything else, so I decided to be boring and predictable." Though finding a non-tacky costume that fit him (mostly the wings, though), and would actually be comfortable proved to be rather difficult. But hey. It worked. That's what mattered. "And besides, you never know when you might need a flimsy plastic axe.

Dapper Lunatic

Ophelia was still pretty absorbed in looking around the room of all the people in colourful costumes, she didn't notice Niven's approach at first. That was until Dmitri nudged her gently and and gave a small nod towards the other small winged child.

Ophelia smiled brightly at Niven when she did see him and gave a small wave back. "Hello," she said, "I like your costume. My name is Ophelia." She was speaking quickly, the way she did when she was really excited, like she was now. She didn't need the candy the boy was offering (and Dmitri would regret the whole thing later) but she took in anyways, gratefully,"Thank you."
Aodh gave the teenage viking a little wave back, confused out of his mind. Goddamned teenagers. He noticed Guin enter with a child at his heels, but he just smiled. Let the girl have some fun without him. He would go mingle.

Niven, meanwhile, gave an excited giggle as soon as the candy was accepted. He had been worried for a moment that the child wasn't going to pay him any attention, which would certainly have turned awkward rather quickly. He said nothing, but simply stood there, waiting for the girl to do something.

He was clueless. He had never been in a social situation before. He had lived on a couch for the last month.

Shanyume's Wife

Romantic Senshi

To say this Halloween had been uneventful would be a large joke for the Naiads family. Since the start, mother and daughter had disagreed upon costume after costume until doors were slammed, fabric torn, and words exchanged. The result?

Yuki stood in the door way looking around. In a strange way, she felt like an idiot dressed in the Egyptian style costume but being Cleopatrahad some fun to it as well. It fit the idea that no one would mess with her but she was in less clothing than she enjoyed. At least this Halloween wouldn't bless her with strange powers.

Glancing around the room, the young child realized one thing: she didn't know a soul.

Dapper Lunatic

Ophelia just stood there and waited too, for the boy to do something, maybe introduce himself or reciprocate the comment. She blinked at him a few times when nothing came. She herself wasn't too use to social situations so she wasn't all that sure what to do. She eventually managed to come up with "What's your name?" It seemed like a good place to start.

Dmitri stood and watched the two children for a bit fairly amused. Awkward kids were kind of funny.
